iPhone/iPod Camino de Santiago mobile app is now avaliable

Postby ivar on 12 May 2012, 10:15

Hi all,

Versions 1.2 of the Camino de Santiago app is now out!

What is new:
- More stable! Version 1.0 was a bit buggy, this version is much more stable.
- No need to log in to see tips left behind by other pilgrims.
- Option to reserver private lodging on some stages.

iPhone iTunes Store:

Android Play Store:

What does this app do?

This app is an extension of the forum. It is not a way to access the forum. My idea is as follows.

Before you walk the Camino, accessing the forum on your computer is useful and you can learn a lot of things. And once you are back home, many come back to share their experiences. This is great!

But while you are walking, there is no tool to stay in touch and help each other out.

I know, many like to disconnect and just enjoy the walk while on the Camino, and that is fine. ...and some just don't like technology while walking... and that is fine too.

The idea for this app is to leave a digital "Post-It" note for each stage your complete. A one sentence tip about a place to eat or a good/bad place to sleep. It should take 2 minutes, and could be done while you have wifi access at the bar in the afternoon while waiting for your food.

This way, you help pilgrims walking behind you + you can browse notes that others have left behind for the stages you have coming up.

These notes/tips will be much more up to date than a guide book could ever be.

You will know who have left each comment, since we use the same login as we are using in the forum. Same avatar and username.

As it is right now, the app has no information in it since we are just starting out. If you have a diary, or just from memory, some tips to share, pleas feel free to add tips in the app even if you currently are sitting at home. People on the road might find your tip helpful.

Please ask any questions or feedback here in this thread... I hope you like it!!

Buen Camino!

This is SO AWESOME! Being a techie person I LOVE this and now even more excited about walking the Camino a second time. Thank you for doing this Ivar. I assume it would work on iPad too. I'm going to check it out and have a whole blog of information that i could add little tidbits from.

Wonderful news ! Thank You for all of the work you do to make this forum, and now the app. Thought that someone would have one out soon....I think it can be another great tool to utilize....especially for us newbies....and doesn't weigh anything at all :) Will check it out, thanks again !

Thank you for you nice comments.

Yes it should work for the iPad as well, the Android version will be out this weekend or early next week.

I just tried to add a comment in the app, and it gave me an error, so please be patience as we figure out the last few bugs... but I hope the app will be useful.

Buen Camino!

Yes, there is a problem with saving... so make a mental not of things and try again once we have looked at this bug. We might have to wait until monday/tuesday before it gets fixed since I am not the one that need to look at this.

Thanks!!

Cannot log in....?
Says that "Your user and password are not right, please check them and try again"
I have done. and same message appear.
Er det noe galt Ivar, kan jeg ikke være pålogget appen samtidig som jeg er pålogget med pc?
Or maybe the app won't accept the norwegian letters "Æ, Ø eller Å" in username and/or password?

The app automatically capitalises the first letter of your user name. You need to press shift to make the first letter lower case.

Hi Ivar

Great news about the app. Just downloaded it to my Iphone and Ipad but can't seem to get it to accept my login details on either of them. Enter my board User name and password and press return, keyboard disappears and then nothing  .

Help, what am I doing wrong?

Looks great though. Can't wait to use it.

Thank you Ivar.

After you add your username and password, you need to scroll down a bit and press "Save"... that should authenticate you. This part works for me on my iPhone with the current version of the app.

That said, the app still has several bugs. We sent an updated version to Apple for approval yesterday, it might take them a week before they push it out to your phone. So in about 5-6 days you might see that there is a new version of the app available. When that happens, download it and let me know if there are any more problems.

Thanks!!

I am having the same problem. Thank you so much for all your hard work on this Ivar. Do you have any tips about what else I could do so that I could log in on my iPhone. I've checked the capitalisation of first letter etc and I don't have any problem logging onto the site on my Mac.
Many thanks

We now have a new version out for iPhone (v1.1). You may have to delete the old version on your phone, then re-download the new version from the app store for it to work well. For me it works now.

If you have problems remembering your password you can get it mailed to you here:
ucp.php?mode=sendpassword

Remember both username and password are case sensitive.

I am sure there are small tweaks that we still need to work out, but the basics seems to work on the iPhone version right now.

The Android version still need some work.... but we are working on it as well.

Re: iPhone/iPod Camino de Santiago mobile app is now avaliable

Postby vagabondette on 11 Jun 2012, 16:39

Just downloaded it and will play with it. one thing that would be nice is if you could have info about 'between' stage places too. personally I don't plan on sticking with some arbitrary "stage" schedule and it's frequently recommended to stop mid-stage as many have nicer places to stay...

I also think it should be accessible offline and it'd be nice if it was pre-populated with lodging/restaurant names so you could click on the name of a certain lodging and you see all the reviews for it.

I'm all about crowd-sourced data if a good initial framework is set up to organize it. Otherwise it becomes this mass of confusing, hard to manage information that becomes really difficult to use.

I could see it set up like this:

Stage/KM =>
Category Menu (i.e. Lodging/Food/General Tips) ->
Category list (i.e. list of known things for that category in that location with the ability for users to add a custom item if something isn't listed) ->
Notes for a specific item on the list

But, it's better than nothing. I just know that looking at it for 5 minutes I already found it confusing and that was with only a couple entry. As more get added it's going to be really hard to use IMO.

Good luck with it!

Hi there,

I know that this application is a first step... and I know, especially the android version is not working as it should on some phones.... and that it could be easier to use.

This is the first project hat I have contracted work to be done for the forum, everything else has been done by me on a hobby basis.

So look at this as a first step... what is for sure is that the data entered into this application, will be available in future version of the app. My problem is that the cost of continuing the development of the mobile app.

So my question is: Are there any mobile app developers out there to move this app to the next level?

Un saludo,
Ivar

have you tried any of the free app development systems? it might be possible to get the app 90% of the way with those and just hire someone to do the last bit. Would be a lot cheaper than hiring someone from scratch. there are some that have built in maps, photo galleries, etc. that you could add and users could add their own stuff.

Re: iPhone/iPod Camino de Santiago mobile app is now avaliable

Postby Foxierya on 22 Jun 2012, 22:18

Hello,

I uploaded the app on my mobile and computer. Tried to log in from my iPhone but gave me an error message that my username/password is incorrect (I used the same username/password when I log in to the forum). And since there is no OK button, not sure which one to select (SAVE, REGISTER, VISIT THE FORUM, CREDITS).

Sorry I am not a techie person and not sure what I am doing wrong. I just wanted to see how this app works so I'll have an idea how to use it when I do my Camino Walk in September.

Best regards,

Thanks Ivar. Easy to load onto the Iphone once I worked out that Save , not register is what I had to do.

re The Press SAVE to login to the app . Perhaps this button should just say Login to app? . Either that or get rid of the Register button , or rename it as login to website. ?

Thanks very much for the work on this. If you have no luck with getting an Apps developer to come forward, perhaps you should sell a subscription for a nominal fee and get the functionality quicker.?

After entering your login/password you press "Save", then you can go to the main screen.

We have had several pilgrims now entering reviews of stages (Thank you!!).

I know the app is not great.. I know that I need to re-do it, making it a better user experience and nicer... since the idea is a good one!

... I just need to find a way to fund the development of the app. :?

Version 1.2 is now out for Android (The new iPhone version has been sent to Apple, should take 10 days to get approved)

- Leave tips for pilgrims behind you, and read tips from pilgrims ahead of you on the trail.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta ... ago.iphone

Little by little the app is getting better. Version 1 was not very good (I have to be honest), this version is a step in the right direction.

What is new:
- No need to be logged in to see tips from other pilgrims.
- To be able to leave tips, you need to log in with your forum username and password (very important to know that they are both case sensitive. The username "tom" and "Tom" are two different username...
- Some stages now have the option to book private lodging via booking.com.
- General bug fixes.

It is free, so if you have an android phone... try it out. (If you did download it once, but then deleted it... try again, this version is much better. :-)

Buen Camino!
