First timer will walk the VdlP in April and May

Postby marcuswilder on 01 Mar 2006, 00:00

Forgive this duplicate post, but I want to cover all possible bases.

I fly out March 27. I will walk the VdlP in April and May. I anticipate 42 walking days. All comments veterans might be kind enough to make will be sincerely appreciated.

I will especially appreciate comments on footwear.
All information from everyone is sincerely appreciated!

Hi Marcus!

Regarding your question on footwear I just wanted to point you to a thread that we had earlier on this topic. This post is in the Camino Frances section, but I am thinking that these recommendations would also work for VdlP.

Have a look here:

VDLP

With any luck you have picked the right time of year to walk the VdlP weatherwise.

It is a fairly flat route so you do not need the sort of shoes/boots that you would need for walking in the Alps. I am reluctant to say any more as there are so many different views, just if you already have some walking boots/shoes you are comfortable with use them.

Allow enough time to see what there is to see in towns like Seville, Merida, Caceres and Salamanca, to me missing out on them just to walk the entire route is not the choice I would make. Better to allow enough time to do both.

Thank you all for your comments. I have decided to go with my old and trusted heavy boots.

I have allowed all of April and May for the walk. I calculate 42 walking days. We will see how realistic that is. One group with a website did it in 35 walking days.

For those beginning the VDlP in April, heads up! The Feria de Abril in Sevilla is April 20-25 (or thereabouts) - 2 weeks after Semana Santa. When we walked the VDlP we landed in Sevilla during the Feria (we had no idea back then). If we had been all alone it would have been a little overwhelming - we were staying with friends so it was a wonderful experience! In any case be forwarned that accommodation during Feria will be very difficult to find.
