Weather in March and April?

Postby Gigi-Cordelia on 06 Feb 2007, 20:25

We will start walking in SJPP March 18. The first day, if weather permits will walk to Honto or Orisson, if not, we will walk the lower route. We have been looking at the weather websites, but are wondering if someone out there could give us some personal experiences of walking at that time of the year. We are mostly concerned about snow in the mountains passes.

Weather in March

Postby sillydoll on 07 Feb 2007, 12:15

Hello Gigi,
March can be a beautiful time to walk from St Jean. If the sun is shining and there is no rain or snow, it will get warmer and warmer as you move away from the mountains.
However, it can also be treacherous so PLEASE listen to the locals. If they say snow is coming, take the road route. If they say heavy snows are coming you might have to wait a day or two.
In March 2005 a man nearly lost his life in a blizzard on the route Napoleon. The same year, a South African pilgrim wrote that she was "Forced to my knees" on the camino in early April. You will be crossing two more mountain ranges and snows are possible in the Irago mountains and at O'Cebreiro as late as May. (We missed snow by one day at the end of May in 2002).
Dress warmly, be safe and have a wonderful walk.

Check out these beautiful photos of O'Cebreiro - taken a couple of weeks ago.
