Bottled water, tap water, river water – What is best on the Camino de Santiago?

The question was:

probably a silly question but here goes…
I presume there are plenty of places to buy water on the camino?
But…
what is the tap water like?
What is the river water like?
what are the best tablets to dose water (if suspect) with?

there are plenty of placed to buy bottled water and you can drink out of many of the fountains – there are signs for drinking water but please dont throw away the plastic bottle on the ground – there is soo much litter on the Camino, please carry it with you to the nearest bin but have a great walk you will love it
