LIVE from the Camino Bill Beaver: St. Jean to Fisterra, March 2012

Hi all, I think this got deleted in a recent server crash, so I'm reposting now that all the entries are complete. It's not quite live, but I hope it will give folks some ideas as they prepare for their own Caminos. Hope you enjoy...

Mystery of Obanos: English Saint Names?

Thanks for the references so far. These are facts that I've been able to find online, but I'm actually trying to dig deeper for more information on the characters themselves. There was a William X, Duke of Aquitaine, nicknamed "the Saint," but he is recorded as having a sister who outlived...

Mystery of Obanos: English Saint Names?

Hi all, I'm almost two weeks back from the Camino (yikes!) and I'm trying to fill in some blanks in my journal. Does anyone know the English names of Saints Guillen and Felicia who are depicted in the Mystery of Obanos? I can't find them anywhere except in connection to the play. Were they...

Best way to get from Pamplona to SJPP in March?

Caroline is really good with E-mails. She told me there is a chance she can drive earlier, but it will probably depend on how many other interested peregrinos contact her for the same day. Anyone?

Best way to get your Compostela home in one piece

Very true. In fact, while we're talking document sizes, how big do the credencials tend to be? Is there a way to keep them from getting mangled along the way?

Best way to get your Compostela home in one piece

Is a container provided, or is that something to bring along in the backpack? How big are the certificates?

Best way to get from Pamplona to SJPP in March?

Thank you all so much! I just sent an E-mail to Express Bourricot. I hope that when they say they will be returning in March, they mean March 1!

Easiest Places to Get Lost in Winter

I just saw my first pictures of the snow-covered route through the Pyrenees. For those who have walked in winter, what were the places where you had to be most aware and most vigilant to avoid getting lost?

Best way to get from Pamplona to SJPP in March?

"eat something before leaving Pamplona" Can't believe that hadn't occurred to me. Good advice all around. I land around 1:00 in the afternoon, so would you recommend waiting the five hours at the station or wandering Pamplona until the bus is ready to go? Thanks again!

    Fishing?

Hi all, I'm planning to spend a couple of days in Finisterre, and I was wondering if there is a place to borrow or rent a fishing rod. I think it would be lovely to pull up a sandy space and spend a day fishing if it's possible. Has anyone done this before? Thanks much!

Best way to get from Pamplona to SJPP in March?

Okay, a bus sounds manageable. Given the time of departure, how likely is it to arrive in SJPP in time to eat, register, and get to bed early enough to start up first thing the next morning? Ideally, if I'm going to see the sun set in Finisterre, I'd like to see it rise in SJPP.

    March 2012 anyone?

I just picked up a Light Trekker Down sleeping bag that could probably scrunch into a liter bottle and weighs about as much as a newspaper, maybe less. If those are available in your area of the globe, definitely check them out. Hope to see you en route. Starting off on March 3rd!

    Where to stay for Easter

Hello, I'm finalizing my itinerary for the Camino, which will conclude the day after Easter, but I can't figure out whether it would be better to spend Easter in Finisterre or Santiago. What would be the pros and cons of either? Where would you recommend staying, and how far in advance should...

Inevitable for feet to stink, or a sign of bad shoes?

Hi all, I've bought a pair of Merrells and tested them out in the desert. After just a day of wearing them, my feet smelled like death itself. Is this something I should just counter with foot powder, or is it a sign that I should invest in different waterproof shoes? Thanks much, Kyle

Best way to get from Pamplona to SJPP in March?

Hi everyone, I understand that the bus between Pamplona and SJPP is closed for the winter, so what would be the best way to make the trip at this time of year? I'm by myself, so a taxi fare might be a bit steep for me. Are there alternatives or else other peregrinos looking to arrive on March...

Storing your car while you're on El Camino

Hello, I'm planning to start El Camino Frances in March, and I'm wondering how to properly store my car so the battery won't die and the tires won't go flat. I live by myself, and I'm not sure how reasonable it would be to ask my friends to take it out for a drive once a week. Any tips? Buen...

    Staying Balanced in Winter

Awesome. Are they scattered along the way, or is each town most likely to have one? I guess the other question here is, how much does one have to stock up at each store?

    Staying Balanced in Winter

Hello, I'm looking to start walking on March 1 of 2012, and though there are lots of posts about the wonderful fruits available in the summertime, is there much produce to be found in winter and early spring, whether dried, preserved, etc? If so, where are good places to find it? If not, what...

SJPP to Finisterre in March 2012

Fantastic. No, I'm not being swayed by the "beware this or beware that" comments. They're valuable. "Beware" is just a contraction of "Be aware" anyway, and I believe in being prepared. One more question about finding places to stay. How are albergues and refugios marked? Do they tend to...

SJPP to Finisterre in March 2012

Wow, this was very quick, very helpful information. I'm adding this to my Camino folder, though of course, each answer has brought up new questions. For those who have walked in the snow, how did you navigate with covered markers? Where were you able to stay with numerous albergues closed...
