    KUMANO KODO not the Camino

I walked in 2019 as well. I found the Kumano Travel service to be great, and they are local, so supporting them means I am supporting the local economy. Going through other companies outside of Japan takes money away from the KK. Most people who complain about the process are not aware of the...

Telephone calls from Spain to Home?

People make it really difficult. More than it needs to be. I prefer Orange or Vodafone in Spain and Portugal, respectively. I still recommend calling Verizon to verify your phone is unlocked. It doesn't hurt to be sure.

Telephone calls from Spain to Home?

Rosemary, I have Verizon with an iPhone 4S and I'll tell you what I did. I called Verizon and asked to have them unlock my phone. Then when I got to Spain, I went to an Orange store and said in my broken Spanish "necesito una SIM card por mi iPhone. Mucho internet, no telefono" I paid 10€ for...

How much money should I need for the entire pilgrimage?

First off, never buy currency. Get it at the ATM at the airport when you land. You get a better exchange rate. Second, my budget of 30€ a day did not include alcohol other than the bottle of wine you get at dinner with the menu del dia. Beer is probably going to run 2-3€ a pint.

    Need GPS Suggestions

True NicoZ but for $25 on a SIM card in Spain you get at least 1GB of data. If you want overpay for services, go for it. I think everyone should hear both sides and make their own decision based on their needs. Since the forum is so incredibly slow, I'll probably not respond much more to...

    Need GPS Suggestions

Point is, using a SIM card in country is not a hassle and it's cheaper than Verizon's measly 100mb of data. I use Skype to talk to family. It's free and used very little of my data. I did keep track. iMessages don't count against your text message allotment either. I never stood in line...

    Need GPS Suggestions

Good for you. Walk your own walk. I know for a fact if I had not had my phone on my last walk I would have been screwed. If you read my blog post I shared you would know why. I also know you only get one first Camino. I'll be interested to hear how it goes a second time around. I know my two...

Verizon's international data plan is a complete rip off. FYI.

    Need GPS Suggestions

I haven't used a Spot. I just text (iMessage) or email family from the Camino. It's cheaper and lighter. SIM cards are cheap in Spain. So is the unlimited data plans. I understand the allure of the Spot but for the Camino it's overkill.

    Plastic bags and snorers

Yep. Tis true. It wouldn't hurt to carry earplugs to hand out but I doubt you'd want to carry the weight! ;) Walk your own walk. I try to stay away from too much information. All it does is cloud your experience. I'm thankful I didn't read too much about the Camino before I walked.

    Plastic bags and snorers

Well since Santo Domingo is no longer donativo, maybe they've changed the rules. Too bad. I really liked that place. :( Especially the old albergue.

    Plastic bags and snorers

I was a hospitalera in Santo Domingo. I can assure you we did not have a snoring room. We were under strict orders on how to fill the rooms. It might be different based on who the hospitaleros are but we did not want to rock the boat. That's the deal. Every person has a different experience...

did you need medical care on and after the camino

;) I'm a jaded ER worker. Forgive me. Also, check with your health insurance policy. They might cover it. Mine considers it out of network. I only buy catastrophic/evac insurance.

    Anything published on coastal route?

Because there isn't a map or directions in English. That's why. It's also not way marked well and easy to get lost if you're not paying attention. I only made it to Ancora before giving up and getting on the central route after a particularly bad day of getting lost. Time of year also played a...
