Caminho do Este de Portugal (Tavira - Santiago de Compostela)

I happened to walk the southernmost part of this last month, as it follows the Ecovia do Littoral (a cycle-path also usable by walkers) along the coast. The Caminho seems to be marked not just from the town of Tavira, but from the W border of Tavira council. If anything, it is overmarked. It...

    Peter Robins "Pilgrim Routes Database"

http://pilgrim.peterrobins.co.uk/ was the main starting point, under 'modern routes'. This gave links to all the mapping. There aren't any links from the maps subdomain.

Train line to StJPdP currently blocked

I was in Bayonne a couple of days ago, and noticed that the train line to St Jean is currently blocked by landslip caused by heavy rainfall 'until further notice'. Substitute bus with revised times http://www.ter-sncf.com/Regions/aquitaine/Fr/Etat_du_trafic/Default.aspx

    GPS accuracy?

yes, if you want to use non-wgs84 latlon coordinates on paper maps with the gps readings from a phone/tablet, you would use one of the various apps that can display the readings in a different datum. However, as I say, this is not changing the GPS datum per se, but converting the GPS reading...

    Camino Mozarabe desde Almeria

ha, another route to add to the list. There's been talk of this for years, but it looks like it's now reality - thanks for the link

    GPS accuracy?

it's not necessary. GPS, OSM and Google all use WGS84 not sure people aren't confusing different things. The GPS system uses WGS84. GPS devices (and apps) may convert data from one datum/projection to another to be compatible with maps using a different one, but that has nothing to do with GPS...

    GPS accuracy?

there is an offline mobile version of all my maps; with the GPS option it fetches all the routes that are in your vicinity. That is online though. See my blog post for more on the issues with this http://blog.peterrobins.co.uk/2012/08/maps-on-mobile-devices-current-status.html In practice, what...

    GPS accuracy?

with a smartphone, you have all 3. Takes up considerably less space and weighs less too. Plus you can use it for getting info, booking tickets, email, making notes, listening to music or to the radio, watching tv ... hey, you can even talk with people using it.

    GPS accuracy?

no. I would doubt whether any map or gps software includes elevation in distance calculation. Complicates the calculations without providing much benefit. Few walking routes are steep enough to add much to the distance.

    GPS accuracy?

see http://blogs.esri.com/esri/arcgis/2013/07/15/smartphones-tablets-and-gps-accuracy/ for an up-to-date assessment of smartphone accuracy. For me, the key difference is that gps is not a smartphone's primary purpose, so the aim is not accuracy but producing something that's good enough for...

    Train Derailment at Santiago

    Train Derailment at Santiago

according to the head of Renfe, it is not a question of cost, but that this line, opened last year, is still in a transition phase; it will not be a fully operational AVE line until 2018. There are some outstanding issues with the ERTMS ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_R ... ent_System )...

    Train Derailment at Santiago

the judge ruled this afternoon that, although the timing and place of the call was 'unfortunate' given what transpired, it was part of the normal work of a train journey and could not be held to be responsible for the crash. http://www.elcorreogallego.es/santiago/ ... ia-819940/

    Train Derailment at Santiago

I doubt that - the idea that 'countryside' should be 'pretty' is modern :-) indeed. This sort of accident inevitably (and rightly) puts the spotlight on rail safety, but longer-term stats give the incidence of passenger fatalities in Spain at <0.4 per billion passenger km...

    Train Derailment at Santiago

what's the alternative though? Should Galicia remain cut off and economically backward, with mules and ox carts? Should Santiago be just a museum for affluent outsiders to photograph on brief visits, or should it modernise like any other city? Should Spain keep its old trundle trains that took...
