Three Variants Worth Considering Near Avilés and Luarca

It's an absolute no-brainer! I can't encourage people to go for that one strongly enough. Spread the word!

    Snowfall in the Roncesvalles area

Not the classic "spring break," I grant you, but I'll take it.

    Snowfall in the Roncesvalles area

A snowy, windy day crossing the Puerto del Acebo on the Camino Primitivo today, too! (I'll take that over rain pretty much any time.)

Camino de Madrid Trip Report - March 2023

I get one week off for spring break, so I hit a camino, try to walk a long ways, and see where I end up. Pulling the same trick on the Primitivo right now. Two days in, arrived in Campiello today. I'll try to reach Santiago by Saturday, but if I'm miserable, I'll dial it back and be happy with...

Three Variants Worth Considering Near Avilés and Luarca

Glad to hear it! And agreed, do it with the gps, for sure.

Salinas on the Camino Norte - when was route changed?

Incidentally, if you have the time, I recommend a variant from Salinas! https://davewhitson.com/index.php/2023/09/03/three-variants-worth-considering-on-the-camino-del-norte-near-aviles-and-luarca/

Salinas on the Camino Norte - when was route changed?

Changed a few years ago: https://www.caminodesantiago.me/community/threads/so-long-salinas-and-san-martin-de-laspra.70926/ I can't speak to why those aren't updated, but speaking more broadly, the Norte seems to be re-routed in so many small ways (sometimes back and forth) that it can be tough...

Open Albergues on the Camino del Norte

Here's an additional option--I've heard back from a number of albergues and other accommodations at this point, so it's reasonably well updated for 2024. Open dates in Column J: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1QXxsop8Hm5RClfPwgdHX4OzK-pDn0h4s2QwIJlzZLAs/edit#gid=2087573628 Dave

    Monasteries on the Norte

It's been really tough post-COVID to get clarity on some spots. Lots of places listed as "closed temporarily" that just faded away. And occasionally, a closed place comes back. The albergue at the monastery in San Salvador de Valdediós is one of those--it reopened this past summer. It's not on...

    Monasteries on the Norte

The abbey albergue in Cóbreces has been closed for a few years now, unfortunately. Still hoping it comes back sometime. They do offer private rooms. The same is true for Zenarruza, incidentally--you can't reserve a bed in the albergue in advance, but you can book a private room.

    Larrabetzu Albergue

It's like the annual game of "What's happening with the Gernika albergue now?"
  12. Dave

    Larrabetzu Albergue

Actually, I take it back--HOSVOBI just confirmed not only that Lezama will be open (June-September), but Larrabetzu as well! The latter will be operating Holy Week - mid-October.

    Larrabetzu Albergue

Michael - I just checked in with the ayuntamiento in Lezama and they indicated that the albergue there is set to reopen in June, as is typical. Maybe it's under new management now? Have you heard anything more about this? I'm trying to follow up with HOSVOBI. Would be nice if this one, at...

Starting the Ingles in Texas is now Possible

As it happens, I've just posted a new episode of the Camino Podcast focused on the Camino San Antonio, the Baby Steps Camino / Camino de la Unidad in Florida, and Saint James' Way in England. Three options for starting the Camino officially (the Florida option is almost good-to-go for...

Are the distances on Gronze correct?

I also have a long-standing theory that kms walked before sunrise don't count. The body's internal pedometer only functions with daylight.

Are the distances on Gronze correct?

Maybe so, @Luka! It is the path of least resistance (and email).
  17. Dave

Are the distances on Gronze correct?

The most common negative feedback I get on the guidebook is that the distances are all 1-2km shorter than the reality. It's like there's some grand conspiracy out there, among guidebook authors, to make everything sound easier than it is. Seems odd when you think about it--wouldn't we want to...

    Ferry to bypass Irun

It's waymarked, too. As you anticipate, the route drops you in right at the ermita. Not worth backtracking into Irún, unless you want the much more budget-friendly accommodation in the albergue for the evening.

Where would you plan to spend an extra day?

It's tempting to mention the big cities, and there's definitely plenty to enjoy in San Sebastián, or Bilbao, or Santander, or Gijón. But give me Comillas. A smaller town, a great plaza to hang out in, a big grassy area with beautiful buildings on both sides, Gaudí, and a good beach just outside...

    Alternative Route from Deba

Dang - Some unfortunate news: Albergue Kanpaia (Kanpaia Aterpea) in Getaria has closed. Another pilgrim-focused albergue on the Norte in Basque Country bites the dust. That makes the "stay in Getaria, push onto Izarbide" move a little harder, though there still is the other (more expensive)...
