    Vezelay joining Chemin du Puy

There is a route from Vezelay to Le Puy. It is part of the Trans-Europe long-distance path from Bulgaria to Portugal (Black Sea to the Atlantic) . I do not know whether it ranks as an official camino, but it does coincide with the French Grande Randonnee system so will be well waymarked.

Did anyone spend night #1 in HONDARRIBA?

We walked the Camino del Norte in 2002, starting from Bayonne and following the coast, sometimes on foot, down to Hendaye. As we had previously passed through Irun we took the ferry from Hendaye Plage direct to Hondarrabia and spent the night there. The new town on the shore is not very...

    Bus Times

We travelled back from Fisterra to Santiago in early June having obtained from the very helpful staff at the Santiago Tourist Office a timetable for bus services on the Costa da Morte. There are two services, one run by Monbus, the other by Vasquez Aucasa. We took the 7.50 Vasquez bus which...

Suspicious suggestions at the Tourist Office?

Our recent experience with both tourist offices was very different. The Galician office gave bus timetables without showing much interest in our plans, whilst the Sanatiago office provided the timetables and gave additional advice on getting to and from Finisterre and Muxia. We were going to...

Passports and stamps from Santiago to Finisterre via Muxia

A few weeks ago we had a very different experience when enquiring about bus times to Finisterre and Muxia. We did not have time to walk to the coast but did walk from Muxia to Finisterre. Both tourist offices supplied bus timetables, but the most helpful office was that for the City of...

Accommodation for 2nd night in Ponte de Lima

In 2009 when walking from Porto we stayed in a pleasant youth hostel in Ponte de Lima, not far from the river. I do not think these hostels have a one-night rule. The town is popular with tourists especially when there is a fair on. Laurie

    Record of arrivals at Santiago

On one of our pilgrimages some years ago we were able to post a note to the Pilgrim Office with a message for friends who were due to arrive there. It was put up on a board and they were able to read it. This message board, if it still exists, would help pilgrims reunite in Santiago. Laurie

    Irun

I cannot help with the Canadian end of the journey to Irun but last September we flew from Gatwick to Biarritz. The bus from the airport to the railway station, a train to Hendaye and then a local Eusko train to Irun cost a total of €6.50. At Hendaye it is a short walking distance from the...

    asphalt and road-side walking??

English speakers from the United Kingdom are spoilt by the many miles of off-road walking that are available. We are used to long-distance trails that rarely require road-side walking. Asphalt is hard on the feet, especially for those not accustomed to it. However, there is another aspect...

    Pilgrimage Museum in Santiago

Those who, like us, found the information cards provided for the use of visitors to the Museum very helpful, might be interested in reviving memories of this stimulating exhibition. We had asked one of the curators if copies of the cards were on sale, but we were advised that all the...

Need suggestions for guidebooks to the Via Francigena

For those with a little knowledge of Italian there is a mass of detailed information on the V.F. in Italy at http://www.associazioneviafrancigena.com. For each stage there are height profiles, percentage time spent on tarmac, farm track or footpath (how much can be cycled), assessment of...

shops etc open on Sundays and May festival days?

In France, bakers, especially those selling cakes, and some other food shops are often open on Sunday mornings. On the other hand some such shops close on Mondays. Laurie

Evidence for St. James, or lack of evidence?

Do we have to suffer this controversy yet again? I suggest the perpetrator should start her own forum and leave this one alone. By the way, much of her contribution appears to be blatant and free publicity. Is that what this forum is for? Laurie

Saint James path rediscovered in Poland

Wikipedia gives just one reference to a church of St. James in Russia, the Church of St. James Son of Zebedee, in Moscow (Kazyonnaya Sloboda). There is an illustration but no further information. It appears to be the only church with that dedication in Moscow. I mentioned Kiev because there...

Saint James path rediscovered in Poland

When the post on the Camino in Poland was posted we were walking along the Malopolska Droga sw. Jakuba towards the beautiful wooden church of St.James in Wieclawice which is the last "stop" before Krakow for those who walk from Sandomierz. We were a group of members of the CSJ visiting the...

Pimientos de Padron - Russian roulette of peppers!

We too have purchased pimiento seeds in Santiago. They germinate in warmth but as we do not have a heated greenhouse growth to fruiting stage is slow. We have had ripe peppers during the last few weeks and the plants are now full of flowers but a later crop at this time of year is unlikely...

    London - St Jean

We prefer rail to air but usually fly to places beyond France because of costs ane timing. For those over 60 it can sometimes be cheaper to take Eurostar to Paris and then travel on a concessionry fare to Bayonne and St. Jean, rather than go Eurostar all the way.

Walking with the least amount of stuff

I have had many problems with my feet, bunions etc. and had difficulty in finding boots to fit. However, I have happily walked the Via de la Plata from Seville wearing Merrill sandals and have worn them for many miles on other routes, the Primitivo for example. Mud, rain and snow are a...

I hope to walk for a week from le Puy in August.

To Bob M. You should be able to find guides in French in "any good bookshop" in Le Puy. We used the Topo-guides to the GR 65 but we needed three just to cover the route from Le Puy to the Pyrenees. Many pilgrims favour the Miam Miam Dodo guide.

    Obtaining a credencial

A friend will arrive in Santander, before moving on to Aviles or beyond, where she will begin to walk the Camino del Norte. Is it possible to obtain a credencial in Santander or in Aviles? If so, where? If not, any suggestions?
