    We can speculate a lot but if someone wants to know the real reason they should mail or contact the ayuntamiento. My guess: the land got a new owner and he / she decided to do something else with it. There is no need to connect this with the memorial.

    You are aware that as soon you reach Sarria you are " part of the masses "? Ruined is such a strong concept. I really feel you are seriously overthinking all of this. Even when you are walking you can decide to stop, take another route or take public transport to whatever place you fancy.
