Albergues on camino norte

Hello there
I will be on the camino norte in late June and looking at albergues on the way. Just wondering if there are ones I should not miss, or ones that might be best passed by if the feet will allow. I have done the French route two times now and excited for a new path.

Have a look at this earlier thread about the favourites, which I think is about right from my experience and sums it all up quite nicely. The Monastery at Sobrado has been seriously refurbished since Laurie was there so that one gets a big recommend from me as well.

I can't think of any that you should try and avoid and I'd say it's better to look for and take notice of the positives - we know from other threads that one or two off days can give a wrong impression of a place that means well and is usually good.

Hi Sarah have a look at the Eroski site for the Norte, there seems to be new albergues opening all the time and a lot of them are going for communal meals which can make staying at them memorable. There is one which is not advertised on Eroski, it is 8-9km before Ribadsella, Casa Belen run by a German couple, they only have 8 places and do not want to publicize it and are open from May to October, I wont say anymore but you will have to keep your eyes open on that day for little posters which are no more than 1 or 2 km before it. Also I saw on a Norte link that a woman is opening her house to Pilgrims 2km outside of Vilaviciosa, not sure where but that is one to keep an eye out for.

Do not miss Guemes, hosted by Ernesto. Arguably the best albergue on either CF or CN.

The Albergue "La Santa Cruz" at Santa Cruz de Bezana, which is about 10kms west of Santander is a great place to stay. It is run by a delightful Spanish woman and her husband who provide a great communal meal, good company and a very comfortable place for the night. Its donativo, as it is her home. If you don't want to spent time in Santander, it is possible to walk there from Guemes in one day.

There are many Monasteries and a few Convents..look them up, if they are "possible" do them? There is a coastal route where I swam near Ribadesella? (not going to get the book out to look them up) . Tapia? Norte has great choice.
