  1. I last stayed here in November 2011. The albergue was EXTREMELY spartan.
    There was only one huge dorm with endless bunks and
    blankets. The minimal toilets and showers were coed. There was no common
    sitting space or kitchen. Nor was there heat; there never has been
    heat since construction in the
    16th century! Angels were painted on the dorm’s vaulted ceiling.
    Since I shivered in the cold, their wings appeared to be
    quiver!

    One reason to spend the night was to attend evening
    vespers within the monastery. We pilgrims were escorted by a monk
    through the dark monastery to the chapel service. Painted life size images of
    monks lined the corridor walls. In the dim light the mix of living
    and painted Benedictines all wearing black robes was most surreal!
