The climb up to the Meseta from Castrojerez - a great way to start the day!

The climb up to the Meseta from Castrojerez - a great way to start the day!

Agree completely.

I was told that the climb is called Mataburros, or "The mule killer". Very appropriate name. :) For me, it is ca. 40 mins of tough climbing... not smart to do after noon time...

It is very advisable to take an early stop in Castrojeriz, enjoy the day, and take that climb early in the morning. After that, you are on the Meseta.

From Burgos, I walk to Hornillos del Camino, and next day to Castrojeriz, arriving around noon. Two great days, and next morning, The mule killer.:)

BTW: Great picture!
If and when I next do the Camino I will go around it. I usually stay two days relaxing in Castrojeriz. I find the climb a bit much

I came upon this climb mid afternoon. I remember thinking it didn’t look too bad. I started out whistling a happy tune. By the the time reached the little casita at the top I was no longer able to whistle.

If my memory serves correctly it wasnt the climb that I disliked, but rather the concrete on the way down.
And someone has left a lot of ugly litter at the top.

I walked that section a couple of times, the last time with my son. We had stayed in Hontanas the night before. We arrived in Castrojerez around 9/10am. We had some breakfast and headed off. When we got to the top of that climb, I realized I had left my glasses in the restaurant. My son kindly volunteered to back and collect the glasses. I minded his rucksack. I couldn't get over how quick he was. Well, he was only in his mid twenties and I was in my mid sixties. A great memory, that we talk about from time to time, together with other memories from different caminos.

It is possible: When you are about to cross the road, leaving Castrojeriz, hold right and follow the road instead. When you arrive in Mota de Judios, take left at end of village, and you will end up in Itero del Castillo/Itero de la Vega, and you are back on the Camino.

I lost my phone at the top when I took a break in the shelter! Fortunately, it was found and returned (pro tip - put your name and email address on the back of your phone - I have my business card under the clear case).
