I found it lovely too, but for some people, the thought of facing a stretch like that is like an extreme exposure to "horror vacui". In via de la plata there is an even longer stretch between Villafranca and Torremejia.

You can go by horse carriage from Carrion, it costs 15 Euros, I think. Departure is from the outskirts of Carrion. I believe 8.30 AM, but check.
