Memorial to Civil War victims April 17, 2018

may i know what is that for?

The large standing stone in the middle represent the 92 people from Sierra del Perdon who lost their lives in the Spanish Civil War, 1936-39. The smaller standing stones represent the villages, towns, and cities where those people had lived.

There has been a movement to name and recognize victims of the Civil War, and this monument is one way to accomplish it. There were three information boards to explain the monument. Very moving!

I don't recall seeing this on the Camino Frances. Where about is it located?

The monument is located on Alto de Perdon, outside of Pamplona. I think it is fairly new. The standing stones and information boards are located to your left as you turn away from the pilgrims-through-the-ages statues and start down the short set of stairs to continue on. I saw the stones in the fall, but hadn't noticed the information boards. In April I took time to read the boards. On one, there is a list of the 92 names and ages, and their village. It makes a very complicated conflict much more personal, and very moving.

MEMORIAL PREPARATION
he November 02, 2017

This memorial wanted to be from the beginning the minimum recognition for all the people killed in this mountain range and for their families. It was thought that the best place could be the place where one of the graves prepared by the Francoists was raised but the place was very hidden.
For that reason, already proposed by the companions and companions of Undiano, we saw that the Alto de el Perdón was the most visited area of this sierra. To the right of the road.
Once we had the permits of the Council of Astraín, the first task was to mark the slope with the form that we wanted to give to the memorial.
The whole perimeter of the memorial was prepared with a ditch for the spiral and a large central hole where the main stone will go.

It was necessary to prepare the accesses from the road and the seats for each of the 19 stones, one for each town that had neighbors killed in this mountain range. Each one with a different base.
On Saturday, October 28, an auzolán was prepared with 25 people who changed the face of the hillside and practically left everything ready for the placement of the stones.
We also enjoyed a well-deserved lunch.

Many comrades continued climbing to the top of El Perdón. There was always some work to do, until 13/11/2017 we were left with a large crane and between 15 people we placed the stones that will shape this memorial.
The first stone was placed at around 11 o'clock. There were 19 left!

We placed the central stone with the help of Peio Iraizoz, sculptor and collaborator

So they were the next day when again in Auzolan the companions went up to concreting all the stones, placing well of ferralla (iron) around

We went back every day of the week so that on Sunday everything was ready and clean for its inauguration. We put a sheet of stainless steel. In each stone with the name of each of the towns that had neighbors in the pits of this mountain range, we cleaned the entire contour of the memorial so that it would be as integrated as possible in the surroundings and thus we stayed. Waiting until Sunday 11/19/2017

Some more info .
Wish you well , Peter .
