When I walked past it last year in May, it looked to be brand new and was spotless. I agree with Peter's comments. It is a shame. Marking pens should be outlawed on the Camino.
Sad, but happens every year. What if the Galicia folks wrote at the bottom "FELLOW PILGRIMS: Please do not defile or damage this marker for My Way", St James
Every marker seems to be defaced. Every surface that can accept a sharpie stroke gets mangled by someone's selfish need to express themselves on a surface others hold dear. It is surprising only in the fact that there are so many outlets for people to communicate on line in this day and age and the defacing of monuments still goes on. I am from Canada and perpetrators of this kind of travesty are prosecuted if caught defacing property that is in the public domain.
Where has the respect gone? There needs to be some accountability and consequences to these actions.
