I Am Walking the Camino
The landscape is a geometry,
Slabs of colour
Like the flag of a newly independent nation.

The horizon is a horizontal line that bisects it, horizontally.
The road is two, not quite vertical, lines that converge and form a triangle.
Blue rectangle, green triangles, dusty white, beige isosceles triangle.
And a dot. I am the dot.

I crawl up the triangle moving at once vertically and horizontally.
Like a fly in a window pane.
Until I reach the horizon. Then I do it again.
I am walking the camino.

First day on my first camino, April 2012 just out of Seville on the Via de la Plata. This will be my final post on this thread, in a few hours from now we should be on a plane heading for Europe, ready to start our next. We'll be in El Burgo Ranero for two weeks as hospis for the second two weeks of April, drop in if you are passing by. Then we head south to Alicante to start on the Ruta de la Lana. I hope you enjoyed the poems, and the pictures. Thanks for all your positive comments and a special thanks to VNWalking for starting this great thread. What more can I say than 'buen camino, amigos'?

Knowing this forum, if I posted this innocuous photo in a non-photo thread, there would be gnashing of teeth, ripping of clothes, and several argumentative "my opinion is more important than yours" posts until the thread would eventually be locked. 😆

Phoenix,
At least in this thread what matters is the picture and any associated story....
It is a pleasue to see your handsome picture of clear water and gentle color while imagining how this riverside might be perfect for ad hoc camping some hot summer night.

Your photo reminds me that I'm looking forward to seeing the vibrant colors of France, Spain, and possibly Portugal in late spring rather than the hues of browns/tans I'm used to seeing in the fall months.
Me being a Taurus, I do love the earth tones of Fall as well. Yes, the Spring sure is vibrant in color and a nice change. So green with a lot of yellow as you can see. 😊

Crossing the beautiful medieval Ponte Sobreira and then navigating the street through the abandoned hamlet on the other side. In the photo, my friend Helen looked back as she saw what was around the bend - a completely flooded street - we had a bit of wading to do! I loved every minute of this first day on the Sanabrés between Ourense and Cea. April 25, 2018

Wow, Look at that bridge. Amazing. 😍

Oh dear Lord! Do I remember the feeling! Will I ever forget! Actually, the second photo was taken not many minutes later in a phone shop in the plaza, when the young lady on the left was helping me to put credit into my phone. In the olden days of 2006! (2 photos as they are related!😁)

CF Sept 3, 2013 not long after leaving SJPdP there’s a spot where the trail goes right to Valcarlos or foward on the Napoleon and there’s a sign/map that says so. I stood at that map studying it, perplexed on which way to go for 10, 20 possibly 30 minutes. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Then I realized the map is similar to the Brierley guide but upside down. With SJPdP on the top of the map. I was soooo confused. 😊 I almost went to the right, seriously. 😬

Brierley Guide.

O Cebreiro

photos taken March 11, 2009
and November 23, 2011

Some uses of iconic symbols can be jarring.

O Cebreiro, church, interior.jpg

The magnificent silver chalice in the church at O Cebreiro on the CF was a gift from royalty commemorating a medieval miracle of faith when a parishioner experienced the transformation of wine and bread.

Galicia symbol.jpg

In more recent time the stylized shape of the chalice became the symbol of Galicia and thus now appears throughout the province even on garbage containers !!

dried codfish

photo taken December 2013

cod, Ponte de Lima.jpg

Such fish as these would be soaked, cooked and served as the savory Portugese national dish bacalhau.

In his History of Salt Cod Alexander Lee notes that such dried fish " was especially popular in the Iberian peninsula, where its name bacalhau(in Portuguese) or bacalao (in Spanish) was taken from the Dutch kabeljauw, itself derived – somewhat awkwardly – from the French word for fresh cod (cabaillaud)"

June 20, 2019. I loved this moment on the Invierno. Sitting on a bench in a little covered shelter watching and listening to this woman bring her cows across the road to pasture. She stopped to talk to me on her way back. I showed her the movie. She laughed and asked me to send it to her.

CP, 4 Oct 2019

Planning for my multi-Camino this summer continues to evolve. My time on two of the routes is firm, yet the penultimate part shifts daily. I will have 3 options upon reaching Leon, and it has been and continues to be an internal tug-of-war. For the last few days, some time in Porto and the CP litoral w/ Spiritual Variant is winning...

The arrow really pops amongst the green however it was anything but cool. Perhaps during the time you're accustomed to walking (winter) but not in July, hot and humid was the way. Any slight ocean breeze was a God send. :) Still so very beautiful.

Aveiro Lagoon

photo taken December 2011

Torreira, Portugal .jpg

Torreira is located on the coastal strip that separates the broad Ria d'Aveiro aka the Aveiro Lagoon from the sea .
This misty view was shot near the Pousada da Ria on route N327 which parallels the calm waters of the lagoon from São Jacinto in the south to Furadouro in the north. Porto is 40 km. further north of Furadouro.

10thC Benedictine Monasterio de San Salvador, Lourenza. It is now a national historical monument. The Baroque facade, made by architect Casas y Novoa, who is also responsible for the Cathedral of Santiago's facade, is highly regarded, as is the sarcophagus of the Cathedral's founder, Don Osorio Gutierrez. Today, it houses a museum of religious art. CdelN, June, 2018.

Sao Jacinto,.jpg

Simple one-storey cottages in traditional blue and white can be seen on some streets in the Bairro dos Pescadores/Fishermen's Neighborhood in São Jacinto.

São Jacinto is located on the southern end of the coastal strip that separates the broad Ria d'Aveiro aka the Aveiro Lagoon, where the fishermen fish, from the sea.

Route N327 which parallels the calm waters of the lagoon begins here in São Jacinto, and runs to Furadouro in the north. Porto is 40 km. further north of Furadouro.

A repost and one of my favorite photos of any Camino. It has special meaning as it was displayed in the church as I gave the eulogy for my dad 6 months ago (he loved being out on the water).

It’s also fitting as it is the last photo I am posting. After 8+ years, I’ve had my fill of the forum (these photo threads and you guys are the exception). I’ve grown weary of the “forum pilgrims” who seem to dominate: the condescending know-it-alls, the humble braggarts, the whiners/complainers, and those who seem to enjoy abusing new posters asking simple questions. I can honestly say I’ve not met any of their like out in the wild (on Camino), and hope to not cross paths with any of them in person.

@mspath - you are the epitome of a pilgrim and a good person, wise and kind beyond measure.
@FourSeasons - your positive attitude is always contagious.
@VNwalking - thank you for creating these threads, which enabled me to hang around for as long as I did.
The rest of the regular photo/story posters - thank you for sharing your Camino(s) with the rest of us.

Be well. ✌️

Phoenix,
Your splendid photos and pertinent thoughts will be truly missed. May your new paths be good.
Pax.

For many of us now so much has changed.
Thankfully memories still remain.

This once, completely, even if only once:
To have been at one with the earth, seems beyond undoing."

What a lovely photo, I see an eagle, perhaps a dove in the clouds? What a beautiful scene to have at your father's funeral. I'm so sorry for your loss.

I'll miss your contributions to this thread especially your Portuguese entries. They help me envision what my September Camino will be like and keeps my nerves at bay. Aren't you walking a Camino this year? Feel free to PM me if you ever want to chat about upcoming or past Camino's.

I too gasp at some of the condescending comments I run across. I'll usually just pass on by or try to make a positive comment that may hopefully build up the OP instead of crushing their spirit.

Hang in there, winter is almost over 😂 we are experiencing a second winter her in Meridian, Idaho this week,. I'm guessing it's the same where you are.

Remember this is Holy week and be assured that Friday will come and Sunday will follow. Hallelujah! I thank Jesus for His sacrifice and giving us hope in His Resurrection. 😇❤️ God Bless You!
