Starting my journey in Pamplona in a few days. My plan for my first day's walk was 10 km to Zariquiegui but the albergue there is closed.
You folks on the Frances, where are you sleeping, first night out of Pamplona?

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.

In Cizur Menor Albergue Sanjuanista has been open since 9 May (at least that's what they told me!)

Otherwise there's Uterga which has two nice private albergues, both open http://caminoguide.net/guide/uterga

Buen Camino!

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
If they are open in Uterga, about midway through the town are two allergies across the street from each other. I thought the one on the left side of the street was nicer and friendlier than the one on the right side. It had a nice patio in front where a number of pilgrims gathered for a drink in the afternoon.

Hi Gerald, I'm trying to make some reservations now for the first week of my camino in July. Do you have contact details for this albergue? I would be so grateful if you could please share them 😄

There are contact details in the link but the one in Cizur Menor is a religious albergue, I doubt they take reservations.

Do you remember the name, was it the Camino del Perdon, on the left?
And as rule is it ok to pay and sleep at one place but eat and drink and hang out at the albergue across the street?

I do not remember the name. I believe there was only one place in Uterga where there were two albergues across from each other. There was a courtyard or patio in front with some tables. You enter into a bar. The other place was dark when you enter and the entrance was right on the street.

Do you have an updated guidebook? If not, get one.

Camino del Perdon has a public bar and restaurant downstairs with an outside seating area.

If albergues have a bar then it's open to everyone. If they don't then unless you're staying there you should really be there, but it depends on the individual establishment and the circumstances.

During the lockdowns Camino Del Perdón converted into a Casa Rural and only hired out the whole place to groups.

I am pleased if they are now back in business as an albergue. I stayed there in 2019 after a very late start from Pamplona as I needed to transact some business before I left. It was a great place to stay and they did a sit down dinner for all pilgrims staying there which was a nice opportunity to meet other pilgrims.

They're operating as an albergue again. I stayed there last summer.

Talking of accommodation that is open, Im hoping to rejoin the CF at Burgos on Saturday the 11th. Is there a relatively updated list of albergues/hostels etc I can download. Ive seen one somewhere but it looked like it was created in 2017?

I'm keeping this up-to-date as I receive information: http://caminoguide.net/pages/updates~IVAR

I contacted the albergues I wasn't sure about about a month ago, so it should be fairly accurate. Basically, the situation on the Camino Francés is more or less normal at this stage with some closures persisting such as Cizur Menor and Zariquiegui.

Our albergue in Uterga, Casa Baztán, was basic but good. It’s after the climb and descent, but not far after that.
I can vouch for this albergue. I was hurting after a long day last November. I stopped at the shrine at the entrance of the town to give me strength to go on but if somehow one was open here I would not continue on. I happen to stop just at the door but appeared closed. Just then a mom and her kids pulled up. My Spanish shut down that day due to exhaustion but one of the chicos explained that they own the complex and that they could call on someone to open the albergue. The relief was priceless! I had the albergue to myself and was served a great hearty meal that night. I will always remember the generosity I was given that day and the hospitality from Christopher in a time of great need. I was renewed the next day and found it hard to leave. I tried to direct others to this place as much as I could after. This was one of those pivotal stops for me. ¡Muchisimas gracias por todo! Tonight 12.6 k later in Ciriqui(?) stayed at albergue Maralotx(?).no reservation needed. Friendly but for me the dinner was too vegetarian.. Beans with an occasional piece of meat if you were first to the serving bowl.
The road there from Puenta Le Reinta is brutal. Be afraid.

Hi there! Are you Thomas, from last night? I can't really recognize you from your avatar photo, sorry... I'm the hospitalero at Maralotx, thanks for your nice comment. But let me clear out that no "piece of meat" could be had with the chickpeas, as there is not meat in the stew at all: they were bits of mushrooms, and I'm really sorry if your bowl didn't contain too many of them, not usual at all... Our dinner is usually very complimented by our guests.
Buen Camino!,

Some of those early towns are situated up a bit of a hill ⛰️

LOL, thanks for clarifying Juan.

I checked on the Irun to Utegra route on 5/22 & 5/23/23 --- the 2 albergues in Muruzabal that I checked are closed: emails from Albergue Mendizabal en Muruzabal and Muruzabel Garden- see below. They are both listed as open on Gronze & WP. I have also been trying to reach Albergue Roncal in Cizur Menor - no response since this past Monday.

I didn't know for sure about the two places in Muruzabal but it makes sense that neither of them are open, as I have not seen a single stamp of them during this year (or last year either); Roncal in Cizur Menor is definitely closed, probably for good.

BTW what would be "irun to uterga" route?

And just to update about this year with Albergue San Andres in Zariquiegui: it is open again after having remained closed during 2020, 2021 and 2022.

Hola Juanma! I plan to stay with you in September this year. Glad to hear the San Andres albergue is open again. I will be looking for a place to stay outside of Irun - in Cizur Menor or nearby. I plan to start the day in Zabaldika. Is there any lodging in Cizur Menor?
Oh I meant Zabaldika to Uterga. I'm surprised no one else caught that error.

Hi there! Sorry, I don't get your question then... you want to know if there is a place to stay... in C. Menor, or in Uterga?
In Cizur Menor the Albergue de la Orden de Malta is open and will still be open in September. In Uterga you can choose between both Casa Baztan or Camino del Perdon, in front of each other.

See you later on this year! :)

Hi Trecile - I found the info regarding Malta & Roncal being closed on the website of Spanish Federation of Associations of Friends of the Camino de Santiago:

https://www.caminosantiago.org/cppe...enor&PoblacionId=88&CaminoId=50&Via=etapa.asp

Gronze showed the Malta option as open and does not list Roncal at all. Anyway, I like to double check the info on websites because it is hard to keep them 100% up to date. I will call both as the time gets closer.

Dear Juanma,
Is there a way of making a booking online with Albergue San Andres (Zariquiequi) or is it by phone only?
Kind regards,
David

On their website there doesn't seem to exist an online booking tool, so maybe send them an email or call them, I guess.

@MARSKA, did you notice that this information on the webpage of the Spanish Federation of Associations of Friends of the Camino de Santiago was last updated on 1 April 2015? Use Gronze.com, they really do their best to be up to date. They also rely on information from pilgrims when something needs to be corrected. Look at their commentaries tab - you may see comments of pilgrims who had stayed at a place very recently.
