Homophobia on the camino

Can not believe I have to post this but here goes.

Homophobic comments, statements and judgments are not only unwelcome , but also constitute hate speech and have no place in life, including on the various Caminos de Santiago.

My marriage with my husband isn’t “dirty”. Whilst you may disagree with homosexual men getting married, that’s actually fine. You’re allowed to believe that. However, this doesn’t mean my marriage is “sinful” or “dirty” or “wrong” ( all these words were said). I certainly don’t think heterosexual marriage is any of the above .

Don’t @ me with hate speech. I actually don’t care. I love and support all peregrinos be they gay, lesbian, trans, gender non conforming, bisexual, intersex etc

Every single person has the right to feel safe and today I didn’t.

People can do better.

I am sorry to hear that you have been treated in this way. But unfortunately I am not very surprised. The Camino attracts people of many different backgrounds and viewpoints. Not all of them will be compatible with your own. It would be a mistake to think that the Camino is entirely a haven of sweetness and light.

Ivar, yes. This was a conversation had today when I was asked if my wife was on the Camino with me. To which I replied “No, my husband is on holiday in Thailand, he hates walking. “

From then on it turned incredibly harmful and hateful.

The post is a general reminder that LGBTQI + people do have the right to walk a safe Camino without being told their lives are dirty etc

You’ve missed the point. I’m not asking for their views to be compatible with my own.

I’m asking for a safe space to walk. It’s not the same thing.

I am sorry for this.. remember that there is a "Report" link under each post. If you live a message there (a report) we (the moderators) will take a look at it. (I will go looking for this interaction now).

On this forum, we should respect everyone, whoever they are and whatever they are... what you wrote in the first post is important. Please let me know (or report) if this happens again. I will close the thread since this is not really anything that is up for discussion... (and if you want to discuss this topic, it should be on a different forum).
