Hello - I'm curious to know if anyone has had challenges shipping from Amazon to their arrival accommodation? I'm interested in shipping from Amazon.de (for something I cannot purchase in Canada) to the lodging I have arranged for in Lisbon. Has anyone tried this? I do this frequently when I am travelling to the US, but not this way around.
So, Amazon.de (Germany) to an address in Lisbon, Portugal. Any insights?
(Cross-posting this in the general forum also)

Challenges? Cross border shipping within the EU/EC shouldnā€™t produce problems. Convincing your receiving address that they want to get involved might.
My curiosity is sufficiently peaked that Iā€™m wondering what it is thatā€™s available in Germany that isnā€™t in Ontario- apart from decent lager?

There's a German produced product that is supposed to relieve arthritis pain. Shipping to Canada would be a nightmare - it's trying to send a pharmaceutical-like item that isn't on a specified government list. So, why not try when in the EU? Sadly, only sold in Germany.....

In that case the only challenges you have, in my view, are getting Amazon.de to agree to ship to an address other than the registered address associated with your credit card ( try telling them itā€™s a gift) and, getting the recipient address (hotel?) to agree to receive and hold a parcel on your behalf.
The other thing that you might want to consider is why the product is not licensed for use in Canada

I routinely get Amazon in the UK to deliver items to my son's address in England without any difficulty, and get items delivered to my daughter's address here in Australia. My experience is that they will ship to any address that you nominate when you are placing the order.

I would be careful about customs and excise duties, but given what you are suggesting would see the items effectively remain in the EU, that shouldn't be a problem. On this, Amazon had to set up Amazon Australia several years ago in a way that dealt with Australian sales tax changes that had come into force, resulting in direct importing becoming less attractive.

As @Tincatinker suggests, confirming a suitable delivery address would be important. For example, don't expect a hotel to collect an item from a post office if the parcel is too large to be delivered as part of the normal post. You might find that even if the hotel does agree to hold the item for you, only a delivery note is sent to the hotel, and you will have to collect the item from the post office where the parcel is being held.

At this point, be aware of any time limits on holding items for delivery. Post offices and other parcel delivery services all have various time limits on how long they hold items for collection. Post offices typically are two weeks, but I have been lucky and they have held things for a little longer. My wife has found when she has been arranging parcel delivery when travelling overseas that there are shorter hold times in some places, and she has had to arrange for someone to collect her parcels because she couldn't be there to collect them herself.

I don't think Amazon will be the challenge, but these other things might.

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.
I arranged for a parcel to be sent from Spain to a pension in Sarria. The pension said sure no problem. I was glad I paid for recorded delivery with tracking! I had it posted a week before I arrived so it was delivered ~3 days before I arrived.

I had several problems at check in at the pension and the parcel was one of them. Seemed that I had a replacement/temp guy at the reception who had no clue about everything, for example wasnā€™t even expecting me. But after searching on a different list found that yes, I DO have a booking (already paid for), doh. He seemed to refer to everything to a woman on WhatsApp, and he told me he had to go but would come back soon (didnā€™t even show me to my room and I was a bit lost, as reception was on ground floor with 3-4 rooms but the main pension was on 2nd floor, the building was mix of private residences and the pension). So I asked for the womanā€™s number. After so much back and forth on WhatsApp, I found the parcel had been sitting there waiting for me right behind the reception desk. šŸ¤¦šŸ»ā€ā™€ļø

If youā€™re sending from Amazon, I wonder if your destination has Amazon locker, that might be better?

Some sellers on Amazon use strong anti fraud checks and typically one of the tests is if the delivery address matches the credit card billing address. Not all sellers do this and you will have noted that prior posts have suggested that this is not a problem and giving examples.

Where there are multiple delivery addresses associated with an Amazon account then sometimes the fraud check is to see if the proposed delivery address has been used previously, with a previously used address being acceptable.

Anyway, you won't know if the alternate address is a problem or not until you use it. It will either work or not.

I had an issue with this some (long) time ago when I was in Sweden with an ANZ credit card and wanting to purchase from a USA supplier.

Initially my purchase was rejected and so I phoned the company, spoke to a real human and convinced them that I was not a scammer and made the purchase over the phone.

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
There are some really nice legal "pain removers" available in Canada that are not available in Germany, if you get my drift?

Technical backpack for day trips with backpack cover and internal compartment for the hydration bladder. Ideal daypack for excursions where we need a medium capacity backpack. The back with Air Flow System creates large air channels that will keep our back as cool as possible.

Well said Henry šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚
Since I was introduced to the forum it has become part of my morning cuppa routine - as a prep to my September VdlP Camino. Not everyone in my physical world in so very interested in pack sizes, shoes Vs boots, and all the rest. Thank goodness for the forum.

If you are also taking modified release paracetamol/acetminophen for your arthritis pain, be aware that it is not marketed in the EU, and you will need to bring your own supply.
The osteo-arthritis in my knee and fingers has been getting gradually worse, but was manageable with a combination of modified release paracetamol and ibuprofen. I know that ibuprofen in particular is not an option for some people, but this was the combination that worked for me this year.

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.
Yes, this is easily the "most" informed Forum, thank God!
I just responded to someone on another Camino Forum looking for direction from the Biarritz airport to San Sebastian.
I said take the train from Biarritz to Hendaye and then walk across the border and take the train to SS.
Her question was: "Is Hendaye the name of the airport in Biarritz?"
I said, my dear you need to study some maps and learn the names of the towns where you are going to be walking. Her response was why would I do that I don't plan to get lost.

Might not be something to carry on an international flight though. šŸ˜‰

As an attorney, I pay for my international lie-flat business class seats with money from clients who took legal advice off an internet forum. As previously mentioned, Brittney Griner is sitting in a Moscow jail looking at a ten-year prison sentence because she attempted to bring cannabis into Russia. The fact that she legally purchased the cannabis in the United States is literally irrelevant to lawfully possessing it in Russia.

Generally speaking, I would be very, very careful about purchasing something in one country and shipping it to another--especially if you cannot legally possess it in your country.

I buy from Amazon.co.uk and Amazon.de and very occasionally from other EU subsidiaries of Amazon and have items shipped to addresses of family members and friends in other countries without issues. There used to be a problem with credit cards - had to be issued in the country where you buy - but I donā€™t think that this is still a requirement (other than for online movies, e-books and so on where geoblocking still exists).

Why donā€™t you create an account with Amazon.de and check whether the seller delivers to Portugal (is Amazon.de the seller or is it an individual seller?). An individual seller may have chosen to only deliver within Germany or only to a selected few neighbouring countries like Austria and Switzerland.

Not 'illegal,' just not available. And not planning to bring back to Canada if the results are marginal. Might as well stick with acetaminophen &/or ibuprofen.

When I ended my time as hospitalero, I packed up a bunch of stuff I had accumulated in a box and set off for England. I don't remember why, but on the bottom of the box, I put FROM in big letters and the address of the albergue. In England, I addressed it to my parents in USA and mailed it. Her majesty's post office turned the box upside down and shipped it back to Spain. They rejected my demand for a refund of the mailing cost.
