Info on new Albergue in Zegama

Hello! I started my short stint as an hospitalera in the new Albergue in Zegama yesterday and am here for a week. It is a lovely building in an even lovelier location!

There are pictures on another thread here that are professional and give you a good idea of what it looks like. I've attached a few of my own here as well for those who are interested.

The building has a good sized main space with a table, chairs and a small kitchenette. It should be noted that the kitchenette is intended to be for the hospitaleros but I was told we can decide what we're comfortable sharing use of. There are currently 2 pilgrims here and I have absolutely no problem with them using the small fridge, microwave etc. and I suspect most other volunteers would feel the same. Certainly the outgoing hospitalero yesterday said the same.

The picture of the kitchenette shows what looks like a washing machine - it's actually a drier which doesn't work! There are plans to replace it with a centrifugal dryer but for now folks are drying clothes outside (and with the current heat this is faster than any manmade machine anyway).

There is a bathroom for pilgrims and 2 dormatories. Each has 6 beds. The idea is that the bedroom on the main floor is for pilgrims while the one above is for hospitaleros and also overflow if more than 6 walkers arrive. I'm told that hasn't happened yet. There were 4 here last night and so far, 2 tonight.

Gronze lists the albergue as donativo but I was told to charge 10 euros. This seemed a bit controversial when the director told me and I don't know the full back story but something to keep in mind if you plan on staying here.

The location is wonderful! From the center of town there's an elevator up to the tourist information office (and very interesting wood museum!) and the albergue is right next door. There's a good sized field behind us with wooden benches to have a siesta surrounded by trees. And if course, the views to the mountains and tomorrow's stage :)

To get back to the trail you just need to take the elevator down to the town centre and you're practically there. There's also a great bar (Txanton) in the centre that opens at 7am weekdays, 7:30am weekends for breakfast. It's about a 2 min walk from the elevator.

I'd be a happy pilgrim if I stayed here on a Camino and so far the pilgrims I've spoken to have enjoyed it! Just be aware of the limited kitchens facilities and price if you're heading this way soon.

Just let me know if you have any questions about the Albergue or Zegama! I've got time to myself during the day when the albergue is closed so plan on exploring the area more, including that section listed as an alternative between Zerain and Zegama. I posted a thread earlier this year about potential access issues and I hope to try it out myself this week. I'll update that thread for those interested.

Join our full-service guided tour and let us convert you into a Pampered Pilgrim!
Thanks for all of this info… I stayed here about a month ago, and everything you’ve reported was my exact experience! I was the only pilgrim there, and the hospitalera let me know that I could use the little kitchenette but that it might be easier to eat at one of the restaurants.

Now all this Camino needs are more pilgrims! On my walk, I didn’t see a single pilgrim for 8 days (until I merged with the Francés). With several really great albergues and such generous hospitaleros/as, I think this route could use a little more traffic!

€2,-/day will present your project to thousands of visitors each day. All interested in the Camino de Santiago.
Which Camino is it? Do you have a link to the other thread you mention?
If you look at the top of this thread, above the thread title, you will see that it is in the forum section for the Camino Vasco del Interior. If you click on that name, it will take you to all the threads listed for the Camino Vasco del Interior. (I'm not sure which thread @WestKirsty was thinking about.)

On the main Forums page, scroll way down and then you'll see all the different routes, and you can go into any one of them for all the relevant threads.

I think this link will take you to the other thread regarding an alternative close to Zegama: https://www.caminodesantiago.me/com...alternatives-near-segura-before-zegama.73501/

The Camino Vasco is a quiet route and the alternative even quieter! I was out exploring yesterday and the alternative route was completely overgrown at one point. I'll post more when I get back to a computer in a few days. Feel free to PM me if you are planning on doing this sooner and want some Intel!

I'll be passing through in the autumn, after I finish the Podiensis. I haven't decided yet whether I'll stay in the albergue, if it is open. My decision will be based on the current state of the pandemic and how safe I feel with staying in an albergue. I shall certainly be passing by and shall look around. Do you know how late it will be open? I couldn't get there earlier than mid-October.

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.
Gronze says "En 2022: Del 14 de mayo al 30 de septiembre."
Thanks. I'll check it closer to the date, but there is no way that I could be passing through the Camino Vasco sooner than October, given that I am expecting to begin the Podiensis on Sept. 11.

At this point, the plan is to close 30 September. However, there seems to be some desire by the town to be open in October as well but that is not yet confirmed. The Gronze website has been updating their info for the Albergue so it's a good place to check closer to the time.

I did the Vasco in April when the Albergue wasn't open and stayed here: https://goierriturismo.com/alojamientos/pension-zegama

It was nice!

I should also mention that this is a quiet route! I suspect in October you'll have the Albergues to yourself if you choose to stay in them. This week it's worked out that all but one night I've had just one couple stay each night. They've had the pilgrims room to themselves and have said the same for their other albergue stays.

A great route though! I hope you enjoy it :)

Down bag (90/10 duvet) of 700 fills with 180 g (6.34 ounces) of filling. Mummy-shaped structure, ideal when you are looking for lightness with great heating performance.

€149,-
Thanks. It was @NadineK 's comments in youtube on her stay at the albergue that attracted me: new, clean, and quiet, with absolutely no one else there. At present, that is pretty much my ideal.

Updated info from Gronze (August 22) :

Between May and September there are volunteer hospitaleros; in low season keys must be collected from one of the two bars. Built with local wood and under Passivhaus standards that manage to reduce energy consumption as much as possible.

Hoping to make use of it early November
