Hi,
I would like to hear from pilgrims who had gone through the claim filing process with the Covid insurance provided by Xunta de Galicia. I have reported the incident by calling +34 915 149 959 (medical) which is on the webpage, and provided documents they had requested, and the following email asked me to file a claim using the eclaim website but the first question is the policy number. I called the medical dept, refund dept and the turismo multiple times, but nobody knows how to proceed with the refund process nor how to find the policy number. The website says “to get insurance, you don’t need to apply, stay in Galicia and the insurance gets activated automatically.” So, I don’t know how a pilgrim has a policy number.

Hope it is sorted for you soon Kath . Being a ‘beginner ‘ at anything is difficult. I can understand how you would be feeling now.
Buen camino.
Annie

Following.

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.

I thought the "insurance" meant that you could seek medical treatment for Covid in Galician Centros de Salud or hospitals without being charged.
So, is it an actual insurance where you have to pay first and then file a claim?

That was my understanding too.

I had wondered if this claim "was too good to be true" all along when it was posted a few times on the forum...hope not, but I won't hold my breath. I have traveled elsewhere this year, but had hoped someone would be reporting some good news if they needed to use this "free" insurance. I thought I'd read it would even cover the cost of qarantine lodging.
P.S. Sometimes too much "hoop jumping" can be required and wear a person down; often they eventually give up trying (probably the intentions of some companies, etc, sorry to say).

€2,-/day will present your project to thousands of visitors each day. All interested in the Camino de Santiago.

I find it rather strange that all these departments do not provide you with the necessary information; not very helpful. The company who assisted the Galician government with this insurance is called Tempu; the insurer themselves are Europ Assistance. On their website, in Spanish, they have this information:

PROTOCOLO DE ACTUACIÓN EN CASO DE SINIESTRO
‱ Asistencia en Viaje 24h: +34 91514 99 59
‱ Solicitud de pagos autorizados:
1- Web: https://xunta.eclaims.europ-assistance.com, indicando pĂłliza 4IZ
2.- Apdo. Correos: 36316 – 28020 Madrid

Is this the eclaim website you mentioned? If so, the policy number to fill in would be 4IZ.

I was, as others, under the impression that the offer from Tourismo Galicia was the provision of accommodation, subsistence and medical support as required. I never saw anything that suggested a retrospective claim for incurred additional costs was available. I guess the presumption prevailed that an individuals normal travel insurance would provide that type of cover. I certainly never saw anything to suggest that Galicias’ freebee was an alternative to the sort of cover that any “stranger in a strange land” should always tuck in their backpack

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.

Yes, I agree.

My recollection of the offer (which I took to be more along the lines of a marketing promotion than what one might regard as ‘travel insurance’) was that it included some form of life assurance but required the prospective claimant to be alive when submitting a claim. Catch veinte-dos, por supuesto?

I hope the OP gets some resolution in due course.

It is an actual insurance and has been an actual insurance from the start. The insurer is Europ Assistance who won the contract in 2021. The insurance premium that the Galician government pays is 1.2 or 1.4 million euros or so. The policy holder is the Agencia de Turismo de Galicia. The insured persons are all Spanish residents (other than those resident in Galicia) and all non-residents who travel to Galicia and stay in an accommodation in Galicia; they are automatically covered and don't have to pay any insurance premium themselves.

I was surprised to learn that such an insured person has to file a claim, or can file a claim. I had always assumed that it is the hospitals, medical services, hotels, albergues who either file a claim or who get reimbursed by the Galician government for their costs of treating or housing a traveller who catches Covid-19 in Galicia, and the Galician government in turn gets reimbursed by the insurer. In any case, the first thing a traveller needs to do is phone +34 91514 99 59 and get some kind of authorisation. You cannot file a claim just like that, at least that's my understanding.

All this information is public and can be found in the press releases in May 2021 and on the Tempu website.

This is the link that was posted by a mod a few months ago. Not sure of when it ended, if it has by now. It "looked pretty awesome" at the time.

Thank you kathar1na for looking this up. I have been calling the assistancia number many times from the US, and have emailed supplemental documents including pilgrims passport pages with cellos. After 2 weeks of back and forth they emailed me that the next step for me is to go to the xunta.esclaims you listed above. Unfortunately the 4IZ does not work. I wonder what the postal code is for. Anyway, I think it’s time for me to give up.

To close the loop for the future pilgrims, I will report the end result.
Thanks to Kathar1na’s help, I was able to file a claim. Sort of.
I was not able to use iPad, iPhone or Laptop (IE, Firefox) with the policy number 4IZ. Then, I created a new account using my secondary email address and after getting error after error again, I got in to the “file a new claim” accidentally with a policy number of 4 on the old laptop. Obviously 4 is not the correct policy number, and the coverage screen doesn’t match the Galicia Xunta insurance. In addition, I found out that the insurance company requires impossible-to-get documents, so I don’t think I will get anything. It’s too late this time, but next time I walk the Camino, I will buy a travel medical insurance.
