luggage storage in Santiago

co

New Member
We are contemplating flying into Santiago and then walking, but are wondering about the availability of luggage storage. We would carry our backpacks and desire to leave for pick up after six days of walking our other carry on luggage. Does such storage exist in Santiago -- maybe at the airport or does any hotel provide this service?

Luggage

Hi co,

There is no luggage storage at the airport. They are working on upgrading the airport, so hopefully this will be something that will come later.

I am sure your hotel will help you with a few bags/suitcases if you are planning to stay there a few days when returning from your walk.

Some of the smaller hostels in old town do not have much space left over for "luggage storage rooms", so I think your chances are higher asking at a hotel in new town (e.g. http://www.hesperia-gelmirez.com/).

Luggage Storage

One can post stuff ahead to Santiago from any place in Spain. Each Post Office has Pilgrim Boxes - some large enough for a suitcase - and they will keep it for you for up to 30 days. (The Correos are considering extending this period especially for pilgrims).
If you don't find storage for your luggage, it might be worth asking the post office if you can pay them to hold your luggage whilst you are waking.

There are luggage storage at the railwaystation.
You must buy tolkens for as many days as needed in an office inside.

mail from US to Spain?

Can someone in the US mail something to Spain for a pilgrim going to Santiago de Compostela?

Thank you for this...I didn't find the answer in the forums yet.

Kathy

I have not tried this, but I assume that you could mail it "Poste Restante" to any post office in Spain. It will then be held there, normally for one month. The traveler needs to identify him/herself to collect the mailing.

I did some Googling on this, see more here:

What is Poste restante?

Other pages in Spain with Poste Restante related information:

Post
There are efficient internal and international postal services to all countries. Airmail within Europe usually takes around five days. Poste Restante facilities are available at main post offices.

Maybe someone that has tried this in Santiago, or during a pilgrimage could add to this.

I hope this helps,
Ivar

How did it work out?

I'm hoping to store luggage in Santiago, as well, so I was just wondering--for the people that posted here wondering how to do it--did it work out? Did you store your luggage at the train station, a hotel, or the Post Office? I have a huge backpack that I want to store somewhere while I take a normal backpack for 10 days of the route. Also...if I'm only hiking for 10 days, where do you recommend I start--Leon?

thanks!!

Re: Luggage Storage

I'm cycling from SJPP to Santiago in march/april and will need to post my bike-bag (the one for carrying a dismantled bike on planes/trains/buses/taxis) from a post office near Pamplona to a post office in Santiago or a pre-booked hotel in Santiago. The bike bag is not very heavy and can be squashed down to the size of a bike pannier.
Can anyone add to the information below, eg what is the Spanish word for these pilgrim boxes ( my Spanish is not very good) and is there any detailed info available in English from the Spanish post office.

Thanks for a great website.

bike bag

Please please let me know how you solved your problem once you get back. We want to do EXACTLY the same, post our bike bags from Pamplona to Santiago, and pick them up approximately 18 days laters. I would REALLY appreciate it if you let me know how it went for you. Thank you!

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.
Posting Ahead

The Post Office in Pamplona (and most other towns along the way) are very familiar with posting stuff ahead for pilgrims! In 2004 the Correos advertised the service as "Paquette Peregrino".
These are the post offices on the Camino Frances that you can post "Lista de Correos" to:

Lista de Correos
31080 Pamplona (Navarra)
31100 Puenta la Reina (Navarra)
26080 Logroño (Navarra)
09080 Burgos
24080 León
24700 Astorga (León)
24400 Ponferrada (León)
27600 Sarria (Lugo)
15780 Santiago de Compostela (A Coruña)

When you take your parcel to the Post Office make sure that you write your name down as it appears in your passport or ID that you will use to collect it the other end. You will pay for the parcel and be given a slip with your details as they appear in your ID document.

EG:

Revke Ivar
Lista de Correos
15780 Santiago de Compostela

Also, put an expected date of arrival on it in case they have to hold it for more than 30 days. The Correos says 30 days but will always wait longer for a pilgrim to collect.

The costs (2006 prices):

Up to 2kg €5.29: 5kg €6.15: 10kg €7.25: 15kg €10.08: 20kg €12.30

You will have to pay for the box as well if you have not already made it up into a parcel.

Remember that most (not all!) Correos are open from 8h30 – 20h30 on working days and 09h30 – 14h00 on Saturdays.

Last year a friend arrived in Pamplona after 12h30 with a suitcase to post ahead. They had to take it to Roncesvalles and drag is with the all the way back to Pamplona to post it!

Ivar,

the link you posted is no longer valid. Do you have a new link, or other options for storing luggage for a week in Santiago?

Thanks in advance!

Checking the web site for the new (2011) SCQ airport (http://www.aena-aeropuertos.es/csee.../Left-Luggage-Office.html#Left Luggage Office) they now have luggage storage available. "Medium-sized lockers are located on the 4th basement floor (-4) of the general car park. The rate is €5.07 for a full or partial day." Has anyone used this service? What are the dimensions of a "medium-sized locker"? How many are there, & what is the likely availablilty on a Sunday in June? Thank!

They sell small boxes at the post office, or you can ship the suitcase/roller bag as well. If you choose to send a suitcase/roller bag, they will ask you to wrap it in something, plastic or card board. I just had a Corean pilgrim in yesterday picking up a suitcase from SJPP and he told me that he did get some card board from a supermarket and wrapped that around the suitcase.. they taped it at the post office.

Yes, the suitcase needs to be locked.

Buen Camino!

When my wife flew into Santiago last fall she took a taxi to Sarria. She had a suitcase in addition to her backpack and Jose Luis at Xacotrans I believe stored the luggage and then delivered it to the hotel on the day before we arrived in Santiago. Whether they do it from SJPdP I don't know.
