Christmas in Santiago

Hi, I’m currently walking the Camino Francés and expect to arrive in Santiago very close to Christmas Day. Could anyone tell me if there is any special pilgrim event/celebration/meal/meeting or gathering that it would be possible to join/take part in on either Christmas Eve or Christmas Day?

If I remember correctly the Pilgrim House always has a Christmas gathering. @natefaith can confirm this for us.

It was in 2012 and by good fortune there was a full moon in conjunction with Jupiter over the cathedral that night. The town was very quiet for lunch on Christmas Day, but livened up in the evening.

Yes! We always have a Christmas Eve party before we close on Christmas Day and remain closed until the following year. Would love to see you whenever you get into Santiago and then on Christmas Eve!

They do! There's a Midnight Mass at the Cathedral on Christmas Eve Other churches may have it as well, but I think that depends on each church.

Accommodation hasn’t been a problem at all. The website www.aprinca.com has been very helpful, plus phoning ahead has revealed other places open that aren’t listed.
I think walking in winter has been magical, even with the rain, and the peace and solitude of having long stretches of the Camino Francés to myself, and having whole albergues to myself on several nights, has been very special indeed. Just the solitude I was hoping for, with enough company when I wanted or needed it.
It’s definitely an experience I’ll repeat in the future.

Wow...I admit to being tempted to hop on a plane.

Just a caution note...in the US, Midnight Mass is often not at midnight, due to many factors. I'll assume that the Cathedral in SdC has no such limits .

And that website (aprinca.com) set off every warning in my browser.....

Thank you! And for anyone searching for something a little more low-key I’ve discovered that there will also be Midnight Mass in the chapel of the Convento de San Francisco. Anyone interested in attending just needs to gather inside Iglesia San Francisco between 23:45-23:50 on the 24th.
