"The Crossway" is Guy Stagg's story of his walk from Canterbury to Jerusalem. He writes beautifully, somewhat in the manner of Patrick Leigh Fermor, but this book is much more intimate, exposing the author's mental struggles and emotions. It is full of wonderfully evocative descriptions of landscape and place, and sharp portraits of those he meets.

If you want to learn more about the cathedrals built in medieval times that is the theme of "Pillars" by Follett, read "Medieval Wanders and Wonders, Understanding Northern Spain and the Camino de Santiago", by Kate Simons. Simons is an Australian research fellow who walked the Camino Frances in 2010 and returned to Spain two years later to research all she could about medieval pilgrimage, cathedrals, churches and monasteries. Well researched, well written, a bit mind boggling. Buen Camino

Great to hear; I'm sold!
I'm reading the 1000 page "World Without End", the second book in the series by Ken Follett, that follows "Pillars of the Earth". "The Crossway" will be next.
I read Pillars of the Earth many years ago, when it was first published in 1989, and it definitely influenced my decision, several years later, to walk the Camino Frances. Equally influential was The Art of Pilgrimage: The Seeker's Guide to Making Travel Sacred by Phil Cousineau.

I read "Pillars of the Earth" before my first Camino and although fiction, it really helped me understand all that goes into the building of the amazing cathedrals I visited in Spain and elsewhere. Ken Follett did incredible research before writing his trilogy.

Hello! I'm starting research on the VF and, having walked the Camino Francés, I wonder how laundry/hand washing facilities and situations compare on the Francigena. I know there are more private...
Good news for pilgrims on the VF: https://www.viefrancigene.org/en/historic-pilgrim-hostel-reopens-in-siena-tuscany/
