Surviving Camino Frances in Winter: Tips and Must-See Places for Vegetarian Travelers

Time of past OR future Camino
December 2022
I’m starting Camino Frances in a week. I think I’m well geared up and ready but I would like some tips on best Albergues, restaurants, sites, events, towns that you feel are must a must see.

Tips geared towards a vegetarian will be extra appreciated as I hear that may be hard to find on Camino, especially during winter 🙏

A guide to speaking Spanish on the Camino - enrich your pilgrim experience.
At this time of year many albergues will be closed.
You can consult Gronze to see which are open
And this list of winter albergues

Here's a recent thread about eating vegetarian on the Camino

I've added the tag "winter" at the top of this thread. Click it to bring up other threads related to walking in the winter.

New Original Camino Gear Designed Especially with The Modern Peregrino In Mind!
The first edition came out in 2003 and has become the go-to-guide for many pilgrims over the years. It is shipping with a Pilgrim Passport (Credential) from the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela.
Here is a sightseeing tip; next door to the Basilica de San Isidoro is its museum. This was the highlight of León for me. Kings and nobles were entombed in the Royal Pantheon under painted vaults described as the Sistine Chapel of the Romanesque. It also has, besides various artifacts, a Renaissance library and a chalice that, although never identified as such before, researchers think may be the Holy Grail.

For sure check out Gronze as well as APrinca and Buen Camino app. But as I wrote in other posts and my recounting of the camino I ended last month, lots of Albergues were closing earlier than stated. Call ahead to be sure that an albergue is open.

What day are you starting and from where. I am starting Friday Jan 13 from St Jean or Roncevalles

I am walking the Camino Frances just now - in Logroño tonight. People who have walked in the main pilgrimage season (Easter to October) may make some suggestions but in reality at the moment you take what you can get and I hope that you find yourself grateful for it! There are long stages where only one or two bars are open and towns or villages with a single open albergue and no private rooms available. As a vegetarian you should prepare yourself for a very limited set of options.

Technical backpack for day trips with backpack cover and internal compartment for the hydration bladder. Ideal daypack for excursions where we need a medium capacity backpack. The back with Air Flow System creates large air channels that will keep our back as cool as possible.

I was there last October. There was only a small part of the 'Pantheon' open, the rest being under restoration, and no photography allowed. It wasn't worth the entry charge, imo.
