Mozárabe Accomodation

Hola. My wife and I have completed 5 Caminos in the past and are planning to trek the Camino Mozárabe from Almeria to Merida this September/ October. Looking for information on the available accommodation, (we like to book one night ahead, as we may our way), and prefer a private room if / when possible). Also, if anyone could direct us to an offline trail map, that would be much appreciated. In the past, we have enjoyed just following the yellow arrows, however, always liked the security of referring to the offline trail map with our gps marker, whenever we made a wrong turn 😊.
Any information or suggestions greatly appreciated, as the available information on this lesser known / lesser travelled Camino is rather scarce. Cheers & Buen Camino

Hi, @Troyvan, welcome to the forum. Information on the Camino Mózarabe is not scarce here! More than 300 threads in this subforum in fact. In addition, you should definitely check out the amigos guide which is updated monthly.

Look at their website, http://www.caminomozarabesantiago.com/. You can see a link to their online guide on this main page.

The most recent update they have posted, which gives information on accommodation and albergues, was in November 2022, but I imagine they will soon get back into the habit of monthly updates.

There’s a good size forum contingent that has walked the Mozárabe, most of whom have nothing but rave reviews to offer, so let us know what your specific questions are, and I’m sure you’ll get some answers.

Following this thread as this is a route I'd like to do in the future!

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.
I have stayed twice at Hostal Abadias in Merida and loved it.
There IS a nice albergue there also.
Merida is worth 2 or even 3 days of visit.
Here is an old thread with photos and info.

Hostal Abadias and Merida

Follow it by click on "NEWER THREAD" at the bottom of each post.
On this particular trip (2013) I walked as far as Caceres, and started in Zafra.
In 2021, Joe and tried to pick up and finish, but COVID forced us home early.
Some day . . .

Hi
Just need advice on how to book the Accomodation shown on the Friends Accom Doco .. using Nov 22 version.
Apart from the 5 hostels managed by the Friends Assiciation the only info is a contact mobile.

As I would be calling from Austrslia, have poor conversations Spanish, and I would not expect they would want to ring Australia back, what is the best option?

An SMS text to mobile?

Try What's App text?

I am trying Intelnet and Facebook searches but not finding any emails or online booking options.

Hoping to book first week from Mon 3rd to 10th April before we go as I expect its busy in the holy week before Easter.

Advice appreciated...

Regards Mick53

Hi Mick
This route is getting lots of similar questions.

If you have the link - I’d suggest
Number 1- Contact the association president ‘Mercedes’ of the group

by WhatsApp. +34649806150

She will send you the latest version to your WhatsApp number.

Nely (another association member ) who lives in almeria has an albergue there (donativo)
Her WhatsApp is: +34619860198

There are other association contacts - Veronika lives along the route. Usually after they finish work in Fridays - Mercedes and Veronika will catch up with pilgrims enroute.

Paco is the contact in Guadix.

I’d suggest you load these 2 WhatsApp numbers in your phone to start with.
I stayed with Nely in Almería for 2 nights - she was very helpful with stage ideas - I had a list of my proposed stages and she gave me her opinion.

If you are staying in one of their albérgues along the way - they will send you the ‘code’ to use on the door / usually the night before. The fact that they are aware that you need the code for the albergue means you don’t book ahead for these.
They are a constant help - if you tell them your ideas they can help you book other private places or give best advice to your question.

The other private places will have phone numbers … if the number starts with a 6 - there is a good chance that it has WhatsApp.
Other places (eg in Mérida ) I booked on booking . Com before I left home. I had to cancel some of course because I injured myself early in the walk and returned home

Buen camino

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.

We walked last year starting 22 September. Don't start much earlier than that, it's still hot.
Here's our list of accommodation:

Rioja: Albergue Municipal
Santa Fe de Mondújar: El Olivo y El Naranjo (apartment)
Santa Cruz de Marchena: Albergue Municipal
Nacimiento: Café Bar Centro (Santiago)
Abla: Albergue Municipal
Hueneja: Casa Violeta
La Calahorra: Hospedería del Zenete
Cogollos de Guádix: Cortijo Maromilla
Guádix: Hotel Abentofail
Cortes y Graena (Los Baños): Hotel Balneario de Graena
La Peza: Albergue Municipal
Tocón de Quéntar: Albergue de peregrinos
Quéntar: Hotel Quéntar
Granada: Apartment through Booking dot com. There's plenty of choice.
Pinos Puente: Hotel Montserrat
Moclín: Casa la Cabra (Steve & Sarah)
Alcalá la Real: Mirador Tierra de Frontera
Alcaudete: Spa Rueda
Jaén: Pension La Florida 19
Martos: Hotel Ciudad de Martos
Alcaudete: Spa Rueda
Baena: Casa Singular y con Encanto (through Booking dot com)
Castro del Río: A Ka La Sole

Apart from the albergues, we had private rooms. We didn't go further than Castro del Río as we had to return after a death in the family.

We booked through the accommodation's website if there was one, otherwise we sent a WhatsApp message to the number in the guide of the Asociación Jacobea de Almería-Granada. Use any of the translate tools available (deepl, google) when sending your message.

Buen Camino!

As Annie wrote: use WhatsApp to send messages. Translate using any of the online translators (deepl, google) if you're not comfortable with Spanish.

Buen Camino!

I thought I would reply to my post with the information I received and discovered.

I have now booked the first 9 days to get us past the Holy Week and Easter.

For small places without a website or not available online in Booking.com, Hotels.com, etc use WhatsApp to message their mobile number. It's still often better to directly contact the accomodation as you may get a Pilgrim discount and/or access to rooms/beds they do not put on booking apps. Generally no need to make a voice call.

Also while Gronze.com has lots of info on Granada to Merida Accommodation you must use the Almeria Friends info for any accomodation between Almeria and Granada.... its NOT in Gronze.

The Almeria Friends directly manage the 8 hostels they run between Ameria and Granada, you must contact them in advance to stay at these hostels... use WhatsApp to message their mobile number from their website.

Use the Mozarabe Association Website below for all their information. They are amazingly helpful so after studying their info contact them with any questions.

The Mozarabe Friends Guide was updated last in December .... attached .... it has lots of great info on Almeria to Merida.

Muchas Gracias to everyone who helped me especially the Friends ... best Camino support I have ever come across!!

I started at Almeria march 22 and got to Merida april 16. I had contacted Nely in Almeria and she did an excellent support. She can arrange most of the albergues up to Quentar. Two of which provided a big sit down meal. However most require you to organise your own meals.

From Granada onwards you need to find your own. This was accomplished with camping, refugios provided by the police and cheaper hotels. My guidebook gave contact numbers, where at first someone answered, gave an alternative number; which was either not answered or led to someone who could not help. I think those albergues have closed. Or available for group bookings. Subsequently, i either camped or went to the police.

Those that needed to seemed to find it easy enough to get taxis to more remote accommodation. Resuming their walks the next day.

I was initially concerned that Easter week might be problematic. But i left Granada on Palm Sunday and through the week witnessed a variety of celebrations in the smaller towns, whilst staying in some albergues. The following week became easier, with most accommodation easily found.
