I have heard that there is a tradition/ritual around starting a Camino from Ireland at St James's gate in Dublin. Something about a pint of Guiness. Can anyone fill me in on this.

Also, where can I get a Credencial in Dublin and can I get a sella here before leaving.

Go raibh maith agaibh

Hi not only can Irish pilgrims start from the site of the old St James Gate but we can get our first sello (Pilgrim stamp ) at the reception area in Guinness' Brewery just across the road. The stamp features a lovely carving said to be either Ceres, St James or (in my opinion the rather more likely) Bacchus that decorates the centre of the archway into the brewery. The brewery's entrance is located on James street of course! Alternatively you could walk down the road a little and get the stamp from St James church or go mad altogether and get both
The pilgrims scallop shell also features in the Guinness logo as well in the crest of the local hospital-St James hospital.
I started both of my Camino journeys at St James gate and felt it would have been rude, if not downright unpatriotic, not to have a glass of the 'black stuff' to launch my both my journeys!

If there isn't a ritual now, then start one.

Go raibh maith agaibh, uile. (thanks everyone)

I now have my first foot on the Camino from Dublin. The Credencial, the guinness sella and a fine excuse for a few pints of Liffey Water.

Ta suil agam go mbuailimid le cheile ar an Camino. (I hope we meet up on the Camino)

Will

Hi WILLC
If you know when you are going to be in Dublin let us know as, if its possible, this 'auld pilgrim' would like to 'stand you a pint' - a proper send off for your journey!
Bonne Route

I got my first sella at St. James Cathedral in Seattle and my second at my parish church. I would think all churches have a seal, although these two were impressions, not colored stamps. If that's your case, make sure they don't get stamped over because someone didn't see them.

I expect Guiness has a seal, for that matter.

Buen camino.

Hello Sloeve! I am leaving from Seattle and plan to go to Santiago via SJDP or Roncavalles not sure which yet. Would you suggest then, that I order the credential to be stamped at St. James~ Seattle, then my local parish and head out? I will be leaving right after Easter 2011. I have been well instructed thru this forum and have 2 friends ( a couple) who did the Camino Frances in autumn 2009 who have been invaluable resources as well. Thanks for any info for a fellow Seattleite. Carol

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.
Symbolic way to begin. Myself and my friend plan to leave Dublin first few days in July and have approx 3 week-4 weeks in total for Camino Frances..definitely starting at St James Gate with a pint !! Any ideas on where we should begin as we couldnt do it all- somewhere between Burgos and Leon I think...complete newbies, over 40 and hoping to manage 20km per day to start anyway .

Hi Joxer,

Welcome to the Forum!

Although there are many caminos which lead to Santiago de Compostela many pilgrims first walk the Camino Frances. There is no official starting point for the CF but pilgrims start at or near the French/Spanish border either in Saint Jean Pied de Port, France or Roncevalles, Spain.
For fellow Forum members tips on getting to the camino see these Forum topics >> traveling-to-from-the-camino/ and in particular for travel from Dublin see >>

Hey Joxer,

I'm doing my first Camino in Sept/Oct 2013. Starting in Dublin, will get my passport at St James church, flying Dublin - Barritz, travel to St Jean Pied de Port and begin Camino Frances there, return to Dublin from Santaigo in late October...that's the plan anyway :D

Welcome to the forum by the way...all tips and advice you need you will find it here :)

Margaret and Aidan, thanks for taking the time to reply. Much appreciated. :D

I'll start with the Camino Frances from St. Jean Pied de Port.

Aidan you doing it with a group? I'll probably do it around the same time as yourself. Is it common to do the camino solo? Probably with the numbers doing it you're always bound to meet up and get to know a few??

Regards.

Hey Joxer,
I am beginning the Camino alone and look forward to meeting new people along the way, I feel that is a big part of the experience. As far as I am aware it is very common to do the Camino solo....its a very personal powerful journey I believe and I really feel it will be that way for me!
I am looking forward to the journey but I will probably be a bit nervous when the time comes.. but I am sure that will pass quickly enough when I get going.
Booked into a hostel in St Jean on the first night. :)
Great you are going to make the journey too, maybe I will see you there!
Best of luck with your planning :)

You will not be alone. Our paths appear to be the same depending on your start date. Might even be sharing a pint at St James in Dublin...

Matt and i will be at the gate on August 27 for a stamp, a pint and a photo op.

Hi Jo,
I don't leave for St Jean until 18 Sept, so looks like you will be well on your Way by then. Hope you have a wonderful first Camino experience. Have you a return date or just seeing how it all flows??

HI WILLC,
Just followed some of the thread here... a sello / stamp for the credencial starting out from Dublin can be obtained at the Guinness Storehouse International Visitors Centre just off James's Street in Dublin 8 OR at St. James's Church on James's Street. As I understand it to get the stamp at the Guinness Brewery you need to go to the Guinness Storehouse Visitors Centre at the Brewery rather than the reception area at the Front Gate Main Reception.
Also, just to mention that I returned to the the Camino 'Camino via de la Plata' in February/March this year from Seville (Camino Francés Sept 2011) for a deeper Camino experience and it was a pure JOY! The weather was perfect for walking, easy to get accommodation, met a few along the way (both walking and cycling), all true caminantes and friends.........
ENJOY!! :)
Buen Camino!!

Hi, I started last year at St.Jean and walked to Burgos, then this year from Burgos to Pontfradda, so next year hope to complete the Camino. I am 59 and a regular walker but my suggestion is to get in some training if you plan to start in St Jean. you will be rewarded with an amazing start to a lifetimes experience.
Bueon camino.

Hi AML'
Thanks for the well wishes. I'm just going to see how it goes but giving myself enough time to finish,I hope. If you are leaving on the 18th you will probably catch up with me at the halfway point still struggling,ha ha!

my mother and I will be arriving in Dublin at 7:30 am on August 30 and then catching the Ryan air flight to Biarritz at around 11:30. we are going to head into town and get a sella and a pint. It would be great to meetfellow pilgrims before even getting to France!

Good evening all. I am new on here. I am an avid walker and have plenty of time on my hands.
Has anybody actually walked from St James in Dublin to Santiago - obviously taking the ferry. I am toying with the idea, Dublin to Rosslare - ferry to France and then walk form there. I am interested to know if there is a suggested route once I reach Northern France.

Hi Bill,

By the ferry to Roscoff, you'll be welcome in Brittany on the Breton St James Ways by the Breton Association of the friends of St-James of Compostela [l'Association bretonne des amis de St-Jacques de Compostelle] ...

hi joxer,

welcome to the forum.

for your first camino, i would recommend you do the camino frances. the vdlp is a longer walk than the camino frances. also it is a lot harder than the cf if you are walking in the fall/winter months. there will not be many peregrinos on the route. of course if you prefer the solitude then go for it. also many of the albergues will be closed for the winter months.

good luck on your planning. buen camino and god bless.
