Off to Seville tomorrow

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.

Just back from Santiago myself but missed you at the oficina (second time this year) as we arrived on the 31st after the closure. Nochevieja in Santiago was something special.

The Xunta albergues on the Francés were well heated and the weather was mild the end of december but I don't expect that you will have that luck on the Plata.

Have a great Camino John and look forward to hearing about your winter pilgrimage.

Hi John,
We envy you.....a quiet walk from Seville in winter. May be a bit different from my walk in the heat of August earlier this year.
I am astounded that you have a winter pack that weighs in at 5.9 kg. I would love to see your packing list. I have been struggling with getting weight down the last few caminos.

Have a great time, amigo..see you again in September.

Ed - The route from Sevilla to Santiago was my very first camino during which I learned the painful way that it wasn't what I packed but the weight of what I packed that was important. Because I walk so much I've invested over time in some lightweight gear. Here is the list:
Winter Equipment check list

I like to work from the feet up :)

Boots
Evening shoes – "superlight"
Spare laces

3 pairs socks

2 pairs sock liners

3 pairs underpants

2 pairs feather-light long johns (1 to sleep in)

Ultra light walking trousers
Waterproof trousers - long enough to come over my boots so I don't need gaiters.
Quick dry shorts

* Walking in winter you can encounter freezing fog, driving rain and also brilliant sunshine - I find this selection + lightweight thermal long johns work in different combinations depending on the conditions.

1 merino wool base layer
1 windproof mid-layer (doubles to sleep in)
1 lightweight fleece top
Fleece – Patagonia R2

** this may be one too many layers for some...but I feel the cold! These are all "technical" clothes - they keep in the heat and are cool when it is hot.

Rain jacket
Beeny
Gloves

*** Rain jacket - Patagonia with full pit zips for ventilation. Unless it is very cold I would wear this and quick dry shorts when it is raining and just let my legs get wet.

Sleeping bag – Rab topbag 470 grams

**** this is effectively only half of a down sleeping bag...it works very well when using albergues and sleeping on beds.

Rucksack – Atmos 50
Rucksack cover
Rucksack liner

Toiletries + sports towel (literally one razor, tooth brush, minature tooth paste etc. All can be topped up en route)

First aid kit, plasters, needle thread, lighter, betadine, nail clippers
Torch - microlight - doubles as a head torch

Medication + Epi pen (4 weeks supply!)

Guide book

Phone + charger

Sun glasses + small sun screen

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
Good luck John,

Buen Camino,

Buen camino, John :)

Buen camino John. You will have different weather to what the colony is experiencing this time of year.

Buen camino. Will you keep us updated as to conditions, accommodation possibilities and other pilgrim traffic en route? I for one would be very interested in hearing about it. I'd love to do a winter camino but worried about the weather and solitude. Founded or not? It would be good to know.
Best of luck in finding sunshine, heated albergues, and good company if and when you want some!

Buen Camino John. Looks like I will miss catching up with you this trip, sad for me, but glad you can get away. You were the inspiration for me doing this winter camino, with your positive encouragement. Thank you, and again, Buen Camino. Janet

John, I wish you a good walk. I also did Sevilla-Salamanca, and Salamanca-Santiago the year after. It is a different game from the Frances, for sure.. Boy, from when you first see Salamanca in the distance and until you actually REACH the bridge into the city is a looong walk...;) But it is a beautiful city to spend a couple of days in.

Buen Camino, forum friend.

Good for you Reb!

There is a small chance that I can sneak
in a week walking in Feb or March and have been thinking of returning to the Via de la Plata or chance the Mozarabe although I don't think that there will be anyone else this time of year.

€2,-/day will present your project to thousands of visitors each day. All interested in the Camino de Santiago.

I heard from John when he was in Galisteo trying to figure out what to do about the Arco de Caparra dilemma that coincidentally we had been discussing on another thread at about the same time. http://www.caminodesantiago.me/comm...le-for-the-via-de-la-plata.17077/#post-181651

Turns out he was leaning towards the Hostal Asturias option (they pick you up at Caparra, take you to the hostal, then show you how to get back on the Camino from their place), but then when he called them, he learned they were closed for renovations. A short time later, he got a call from the Hostal Asturias, saying that they had found alternative accommodations and that some other pension would be picking him up. That was the last I have heard, and it was on Jan. 23. He also said the weather had gotten very nice and that there was a group of about 8 of them walking.

So, LT, if you head for the Vdlp, you are likely to find someone, I would venture to guess. Maybe not on the Mozarabe, but I would like you to walk the Mozarabe, so I can then follow in your footsteps after you blaze the trail. ;)

I did the Asturias option in 2011 so I would probably try something else next time. I don't doubt that there will be at least a few pilgrims on the Plata. It wasn't clear from my post but I was actually referring to the Mozarabe.

I guess that it would be fair to trail blaze the Mozarabe for you Laurie considering you and Susanna (and Reb?) will be doing the Olvidado!

Somehow I had missed this thread and hadn't realised John was on Camino until a couple of days ago. Pleased to say JW arrived in Salamanca today. I'm sure he will post far more eloquently than me when back in SdC.

(Belated) Buen Camino John.

You should be around Salamanca by now. I hope you had a dry and safe walk! Boy, it is a long way in from when you actually SEE Salamanca in the horizon and until you actually ARE there.!
