Saludos desde Sevilla!
This is for Susanna who asked if I would post something 'live' from the Camino.
Had a smooth flight from Amsterdam and the airport bus was awaiting me when I stepped out the door. Bus to the city is now 4 euros. Triana Backpackers is as nice as I remember. Now 15 euros (13+2 for the credential).
So far have met one of the two other pilgrims staying here tonight, a gentleman from Barcelona. A friend of his will join us in Santiponce tomorrow so there will be at least 3 other pilgrim on the road.
Weather 13c and dry (for now).
The adventure begins tomorrow!

Good to hear you arrived safely!
Hope you will have a great day tomorrow! And do post more pics along the way, it's fun to see them. :)

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.

Hope you have a great camino! Please keep us posted if you can. I am looking forward to getting back on the trail in April.

Hi, LT,

So glad Susanna talked you into it! I am glad you've run into a few other peregrinos. And we are all hoping that weather is kind to you. Buen camino, LT!

I don't know how to post pictures directly from camera or phone to the forum, but luckily this summer Susanna will be with me, so I will surely learn.

This long exposé is for those walking in the next few weeks:
I don't want to turn anyone off but the first stage from Sevilla after Santiponce to Guillena is at the moment a b**** due to flooding of an arroyo about 5km outside of Santiponce. The choices are to 1) follow the carretera nacional for 16km to Guillena (two fellow Spanish pilgrims behind me did this) or 2) to follow the Camino till you hit a dirt road on the left about 10 min before you reach the flooded area, follow a dirt path for about 2-3 km to the carretera nacional (not the autovía which you will go under) then continue on the highway to Guillena.

Bull headed as I am I tried a 3rd way: the Camino to the arroyo, tried to cross at several spots but gave up when I saw how high the water was (see pictures below), returned to the aforementioned dirt road and followed a long entry into Guillena on asphalt.
Here is a map of the possibilities that a cafe owner drew for me:

ImageUploadedByCamino de Santiago Forum1392144036.428849.jpg

The stage was therefore about 28 km (26km via the highway) instead of the usual 22km.

The two Spanish pilgrims originally behind me were already in Guillena to welcome me along with an American who had crossed the arroyo (up to his waist) the previous day. Later we were joined by another brave German pilgrim who crossed the arroyo today in the rain. We are now 4 (me being the only woman).

We had clouds and drizzle most of the day so pictures are poor.

Accommodations: was planning on staying at the municipal but everyone else was at a private albergue at the entrance of town Luz del Camino run by Pilar: 12 euros including breakfast. Had lunch with the guys (menu of ensalada mixta and merluza for 6 euros!!!) followed by a wonderfully hot shower. That was my day 1 of the Vía de la Plata.

Go well! I'm just back from an extremely wet but excellent Ingles. Hope it is dry-ish for you

Hi Lee, ok that looks difficult but good to hear from you anyway. :)
When I walked vdlp, the camino was flooded too, the first or the second day.
Had to walk a long way around it, I remember.
Hope the weather will improve.

€2,-/day will present your project to thousands of visitors each day. All interested in the Camino de Santiago.
Quite a difference from last August! It looks like you found 4 more fellow pilgrims than I did.
I didn't see a total of 4 until Salamanca. Not many wet places either....but plenty of deep dust.

Be careful.

Good luck with your Caminho

Three of us kick off from Seville in EarlyMay.

Hope the stream levels have dropped by then!

Every good wish .

Hi, LT,
Well, as another pig-headed pilgrim, I know exactly what drove you to check out the arroyo for yourself. Glad you didn't try to walk through, though. I have heard rumblings for years that a bridge over that arroyo is in the works. But since it would also have to be for vehicles, it would be a very major undertaking, so I wouldn't hold my breath. I bet that part of the camino is under water for more than several months every year, though.

Onward, peregrina, we love hearing from you! Laurie

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
Holy Moly!
Awesome photos!

I'm glad you didn't try to cross those arroyos, a person could be swept away!
I can't tell you how many hikers and cars we've had to rescue in the Arizona wet season.
They think it's only a foot deep, then SURPRISE! ! ! :eek::eek::eek:

Glad you're safe - sorry about the long walk - hopefully things will dry out soon.
Ultreia!

Very intrepid!! I remember that crossing well, but only just above my knees when I crossed!
Hope things improve for you and thanks for the information! Those of us who are walking in the spring appreciate it!
Go well and safely!

Andy

Thanks for the encouragement Andy, Alan, Susanna, Annie, Laurie, Una, Grayland and Musicman!

Andy- heard about your 'epic' Camino Inglés via Reb's FB page. So far we have experienced mostly drizzle so I can't complain!

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.
Short stage to Castilblanco de Los Arroyos but the mud makes for tough walking. Entering lovely finca landscape.
Suggestion for those that follow: take gaiters! Will save you from washing your pants.

The Albergue Municipal doesn't open until March. Thanks to Laurie we found Señora Salvadora in Avenida de España, 43. Quoted in the Jirit's list as 10 euros but is now 12 as considered a Casa Rural Básica.

Keep warm and dry as possible Lee hope the floods and weather give you a break take great care go safely.

Saludos desde Fuente de Cantos!
Finished day 5 which should have been a short 20,7km. I managed to increase it by at least 5 as I detoured off the Camino at two spots today. In fact 3 of us took different routes! You would never think that I actually walked this route before!
Weather still mostly cloudy with the occasional shower. And LOTS of water-including arroyos to cross (with or without shoes).
Here are a few pictures from the last few days.

Sun expected tomorrow. I certainly hope so. All is well.

And great pics. I wish I was there too, it doesn't look like winter.

Hope you will have a great day, anyway.
Am sending greetings to your companions, too. :)

Indeed! Squish squish, squish for about 10-15 minutes. After that no problem and no blisters! Too much of a hassle to take everything off but hear that the arroyo is waist high today to Zafra. That adventurous I am not! We will check it out and decide. There is a well marked alternative.
Update stage Monesterio - Fuente de Cantos: when in doubt follow the yellow arrows and NOT the Arco de Cáparra cubes!!!! You will finally get to Fuente de Cantos but not along the 'correct' path. I went wrong but a lovely man in for a chat gave me two delicious oranges.

Not to be too dense, but do you mean that you crossed the arroyo with your feet totally submerged, and then just kept on walking and everything dried? I assumed that the goretex would keep the water trapped inside the shoe.

Waist high?! That's not an arroyo, that's a rio! Buen camino, LT.

No you are not dense Laurie. Yes I just walk through with shoes and socks on. Don't even bother to lift up my pants. Strange ImageUploadedByCamino de Santiago Forum1392571219.104798.jpgenough my feet stay warm and the water is pushed out.
Today we crossed another two- one
up to above our knees. What I missed when I was crossing was that my companion slipped and fell into the water! I was all dry by the time we needed to cross the second. Did he look like Anthony Quinn and have a wee house full of gazpacho?
This guy was SO nice!
He offered us water and shelter when I tried walking in the hellish heat of August!

lol! Thanks!
That actually turned out to be one of my best memories on the VDLP - sleeping under the stars.
This was our bedroom that night. Awesome!

When I look back now at the many kindnesses we were shown on that first few stages, my heart glows.

There was the miracle of the fan, the gift of water from the firemen, and this man above, who invited us into his house and fed us his home made gazpacho and gave us peaches from his tiny trees.

Buen camino!
I remember wll the arroyos from May 2011.
safe walking!!!

Greetings from Casar de Cáceres!
Today we finished day 11. We have been blessed with sun during the last few days. Mornings are cool (wear my wool gloves and Buff) but the afternoons are lovely.
Today was long: 37-38 km because we went wrong this a.m. and wandered around Cáceres. We left Aldea del Cano at 7.30, had breakfast in Valdesor, a beer in Cáceres and continued on to Casar de Cáceres. Tomorrow a short day to the Embalse dd Alcántara.

The "new" albergue at Embalse de Alcántara is really nice. Out of the way down a strange rocky road off the highway. Nothing else there but there is a snack bar in the albergue with meals and drinks. Microwave type stuff.
I was the only one there in the big building and had my choice of many rooms. The college student hospitalaria left in the afternoon and left me the key so I could get out in the morning. Some rooms are 4 beds and some are 6, as I remember. All rooms had fans.

You and your walking amigos should be the only ones around at this time of the year...I would think. A good stop, especially after the municipal at Casar de Caceres, which I thought was the worst albergue on any of the caminos I have walked. Others may disagree, and maybe it was just because it was over 50 degrees outside when I walked in the door of the albergue. It had been closed for a week as no one but me was walking on the VdlP at that time.
I left and stayed elsewhere.
I don't remember that it was a "short" walk to the Embalse de Alcantara..but it will seem short after your long walk to Casar.
Buen Camino...

I guess I have to agree with Grayland, though I did have a great meal in Casar de Caceres. There's just something about a toilet two feet from your bed with a hanging plastic curtain between that takes a lot of the fun out of albergues.

So great to hear from you, LT. I'm so glad you are getting good weather. Buen camino.

Yes you all are right about the Albergue here in Casar de Cáceres. This time is even worse than the last time in 2011 because it is in the middle of obras with dust everywhere. But...there were 2 electric radiators that kept us warm and it is free!
We called the Embalse so they know that we will be on our way.
There has been no one in the albergues here and in Aldea de Cano in over a week so people (wherever they are) are stopping elsewhere.
Un abrazo!

Mind you, LTfit, we just like to complain about the albergues as a way of expressing our sour grapes. I would give a LOT to be sleeping next to that plastic curtain tonight!

Great pictures, carry on to the Embalse! Laurie

Lee, Love your photos and the real adventure you are obviously having. Once the sun came out, the green looks so very bright and luscious and beautiful.
Thanks to Susanna for tweeting this and ivar for retweeting it- wouldn't have discovered this thread otherwise!

Embalse is lovely place, was the only one there when I stayed last year. I have stayed twice in Casar de Caceres and did not find it bad it is free and so is the clothes dryer.

Yes there is a dryer Nalod but be careful! I blew a fuse when I turned it on and all went black. We spent the rest of the afternoon in the restaurant across from the Albergue to keep warm until it was fixed.

Tough life of a peregrina- you need to walk a few km but look what awaits you after a long, hot shower!

The AVE construction is very evident during the stage to the Embalse:

Off to have breakfast!

My next day after the Embalse (Sunday) was very confusing. The construction site was huge with everything torn up in all directions. They were not working so no one around. The signs (mostly hand made) were all down and there was no indication of where to go.
I was able to work through the miles long area by using a GPS track sent to me earlier by newfydog.
The GPS tracks can really be a great thing at times when you have gotten off track or the trail has been changed.

Lee...have fun. Lots of good stuff ahead.

The day after.

I am now past the Arco de Cáparra at Hostal de Asturias. We have had dry weather the last fews days although this morning leaving Galisteo was cloudy with drizzle. Luckily it didn't last long.
It was a long day from Galisteo, per the owner here 38-39 km as we chose not to be picked up. We had originally planned to arrive yesterday in Carcaboso but ended up in Galisteo instead due to 3 1/2 hours extra walking.
BEWARE: DO NOT listen to the owner of the bar El Refugio in Grimaldo!!!! He gave us this map and said that we didn't have to take the deviation to Riolobos but could go directly to Galisteo by circling the Finca Larios which has been closed since 2011.
ImageUploadedByCamino de Santiago Forum1393364771.577193.jpg
This is NOT correct. We followed his instructions then had to jump fences, take dead-end roads, etc and then had to backtrack and still go through Riolobos! What should have been 20 km to Galisteo turned out to be 38km. Do yourself a favor and follow the signs and arrows to Riolobos.

Hi Unadara,
Good to hear from you. Hope you have a great camino and that the weather will be good at that time. There were no problems with the route up to Casar de Caceres but I gather from the reports on this forum that things are not so easy as one goes through the AVE works. As I said I need any help that is available, without the yellow arrows I could end up where I started, the Cathedral in Sevilla! Una(cead or a haon!)

Where are you from? In my swimming group the other "Oonagh" is Una "dos".. Una, Dos, Tres...ah well, it makes life interesting!
I have started to look at Google Earth online and can see the AVE "scar" on the ground. I also click on the images posted and so far it all looks great, paths, tracks etc. On the Norte in April 2012 we should have avoided flooded areas by taking to the road and nearly lost boots and all. I will take all advice given. Gracias.

Hi Plateros,
Left the Albergue de Peregrinos in Salamanca yesterday morning and arrived home last evening.
I will post some updates of my last days although they will no longer be live:(.
Had a great 19 days from Sevilla-Salamanca but needed to cross arroyos and walk in mud up until the last day.
Hasta pronto!

So, I am not clear about what to do when you come to the fence that is in the middle of the way. I understand you can

1) go round finca larios (bad, bad idea, as you mention)
2) be brave, open the fence or jump over it, and keep walking straight. Is that part of the way well marked, or would I get lost?
3) just forget about Finca Larios and the take the Rio Lobos route. Is it well marked?

I am hoping to be there in 5 weeks' time, thanks for any info!

Hi Amancio
Are you starting from Seville? what date?
Unadara

When I was last there in December 2012, I took option 2 and jumped the gate. You then follow the calzada for a couple of miles until it brings you back to the road, just after the embalse of the Boqueron. When you get back to the tarmac road, a quiverful of arrows again tries to make you go left to Riolobos, and somebody has over painted the arrows pointing right along the old camino. I just went right for a few 100 yards, and then left, off the road and back onto the calzada [I seem to remember there was a defaced junta hito marking where you turn off the road]. You then go over a hill and quite soon can see the minaret and ramparts of Galisteo in the distance (and, probably, some eagles overhead). After that it was fairly easy, as most of the path is marked with the black& white VP [drove road, or via pecuaria] signs.

But it may have got more difficult since then.

I would like to know how you guys jumped the gate because we encountered two gates: one new, green gate which was unlocked to the right but with a 'no entry' sign and the other (which I used I believe in 2011) which was padlocked snd would be impossible to jump.

Believe me, we jumped another 1/2 fallen down rusted gate to the left and wandered around for hours without success as there were barbed-wire fences everywhere.

I don't give up easily but I would not attempt it again. It was very frustrating to see the church tower and city walls in the distance and then have to retrace our steps and approach Galisteo via Riolobos - circling the town and approaching it from the other side.

The route via Riolobos is well marked.

Unadara
I am hoping to start from Sevilla or Guillena (depending on the state of streams near Guillena) around april 11th or so and go on for as long as my family, my health and my job allow me to!

Una
I am starting from Seville on the 9 th April maybe we will meet up. It is good to know there will be others heading off about the same time. I hope the weather is kind.

Hello Plateros!
Back home for 2 weeks and only now getting back to updating.
In the end here were my stages from Sevilla - Salamanca:
Stage 1: Sevilla-Guillena (definately visit Itálica in Santiponce, did it last time, was raining this time so didn't). Flooding arroyo after Santiponce (see my previous posting)
Stage 2: Guilla-Castilblanco de los Arroyos
Stage 3: Castilblanco-Almadén de la Plata
Stage 4: Almadén-Monesterio (some break this stage up and stay in El Real de la Jara
Stage 5: Monesterio-Fuente de Cantos (watch the arrows and cubes - see previous posting)
Stage 6: Fuente de Cantos-Zafra
Stage 7: Zafra-Villafranca de los Barros
Stage 8: Villafranca-Torremejía
Stage 9: Torremejía-Aljucén (most stop in Mérida but I had visited before so went on although worthwhile a second time around).
Stage 10: Aljucén-Aldea del Cano (most stop in Alcuéscar)
Stage 11: Aldea-Cásar de Caceres (suggest Cáceres as is a wonderful city to visit)
Stage 12: Cásar de Caceres-Embalse de Alcántara (what luxery - had down quilts and the whole albergue to ourselves)
Stage 13: Embalse-Grimaldo
Stage 14:Grimaldo-Galisteo (was supposed to go on to Carcaboso but had 3.5 hour detour, see posting re Riolobos).
Stage 15:Galisteo-Hostal Asturias
Stage 16: Hostal Asturias-Puerto de Béjar (albergue in Baños closed)
Stage 17: Puerto de Béjar-Fuenterroble
Stage 18: Fuenterroble-San Pedro de Rozados (would stay in Morille instead, last time did 2 stages in one and skipped this stop).
Stage 19: San Pedro de Rozados-Salamanca

Some of the stages are mandatory, others can be changed. I made a few changes this time around (did it July 2011) in order to visit new towns. Also some albergues were closed in the winter so I had to stay in a few private albergues. I will update Jirit's list shortly http://www.caminodesantiago.me/comm...plata-2014-accommodation-walking-schedule.88/. If not directly than in the discussion thread:http://www.caminodesantiago.me/comm...ta-2014-accommodation-walking-schedule.23860/

I will post some pictures of my last few days from my phone which I find easier.

Buen Camino to all of you leaving in April. It looks like the weather is quite nice now with lots of sun! I guess that it means that I will just have to go back!

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.

€46,-
Thanks again for for taking the time to provide us with all your up-to-date information, pictures and descriptions.
Buen-next-Camino!
