Hi everyone,

well, i did it, booked my ticket for september 4th to paris. i am a bit nervous to say the least!
hey, i might lose my job over this trip, but i am so happy that i went for it, finally! it's been on my mind since 1st year art history, 7 years ago.

now all i need to do is figure out how i'm getting down to the start of the route. (st.jean pied-du-port)
i would like to take a train so that i can see some a bit of france on my way there, but i know nothing about the trains there.
can anyone help me figure out where to look up scheduals, and where i can expect to get a train?
do i pay there or do you have to book ahead/get ticket online?

oh man, do i have things to organize. been too busy getting my place ready for a three-month sublet.

thanks for your help,
paul

Hi Paul!
You can check out train timetables for France at the SNCF site:
http://www.voyages-sncf.com/dynamic/_SvHomePage?_CMD=cmdHomepageUK
It doesn't seem to be a public holiday in France, so you can probably book when you arrive if you want to. (I have travelled quite a lot on French trains and only found it necessary to book near holidays.)
All the best! Keep us posted!
Margaret

Hey Paul, I noticed you're flying to Paris on the 4th, me too. I arrive on the 5th, in the morning. Just thought that was a coincidence, and if timing works we could help each other get South. I won't actually be starting the Camino for a few days after that as I'm meeting my friend on the 9th. Anyhow, if you're interested let me know, otherwise all the best for your pilgrimage! Kahu

Well, you are long-gone by now, but just in case someone else is curious...(I posted a version of this on a similar thread as well):

I took the fast train (2nd class) from Paris CDG (the train station is right below the airport. The ticket counter clerk was very helpful - he even wrote down the track number on my ticket folder) to Bordeaux because I wanted to visit the city (I like wine - hence my nickname on this board). I spent 3 days there mentally prepping for the Way, along with buying some last-minute equipment. I liked it - lots of nice cafes, and the people were generally friendly (trying to speak French to them helps a lot in that regard).

On the morning of my departure, I walked down to the Bordeaux train station and bought a ticket to Bayonne. I went back to my hotel (the Ibis, just down the street from the station), checked out, walked (well, actually ran, because I was cutting it kind of close) back to the station, and I was on my way.

I stayed in Bayonne for a night (at the Hotel Loustau, by a large bridge with many flags on it) because it looked like an interesting place - and it was quite nice (plus I bought a poncho and some light fingerless gloves at a large outdoor store there). The next morning, I did the same thing as in Bordeaux - walked to the train station, bought a ticket to St. Jean, and was soon on my way.

The cost for the Bordeaux - Bayonne and Bayonne - St. Jean trains wasn't too expensive (the CDG train to Bordeaux was under 100 Euros, if I remember correctly). And I booked all my passages on the same day I left each city (in some cases less than an hour before departure). Bottom line, it was no problem getting from Paris to St. Jean by train. The key, however, is having enough time so you don't have to hurry.

NOTE: If you go directly from Bordeaux to St. Jean - or even from Bayonne to St. Jean - and expect to start walking that same day - well, you'd better leave really early in the morning. My guidebook, along with the folks in the St. Jean pilgrim office, recommend not to start from St. Jean after 10AM. I got to the center of town at around 11AM, so I ended up staying the night. St. Jean is worth a day if you can spare it.

I will be arriving at San Sebastian airport on 9/11 morning. I would like to get to St Jean pied du port by noon. What is the best way? How much would it cost if I take a taxi.

Thanks.

hello flyfree!

The 11th of Sept 2009 there are the following trains from Paris Gare de Montparnasse to St Jean Pied de Port (changing to a local train in Bayonne):
from Montparnasse
10.10 arrival at 16.19 SJPP costs 88.60€
12.10 19.35 SJPP 100.60€
15.55 22.18 SJPP 100.60€

More info http://www.tgv.com/FR/
If you take the late night train you should book a hotel or arrange your night somehow. L'Esprit du Chemin is closed for the night that late.
Hotels http://fr.federal-hotel.com/hotel_hotel ... _16707.htm

It could be possible to take the train from the airport. Which one are you arriving at? Otherwise an airport couch...

i just got an email notification saying my thread had a reply, so i thought i'd drop in after posting two years ago.

i never did get that train from CDG airport. the travel assistance there had no idea where st.jean was, so i figured i'd hop on a random train into paris, walk around, get a good sleep, and think it over in the morning. i wasn't travelling to be in any hurry anyway. walking up and out of the tunnel to be face-to-face with notre dame was worth it, with my last sight being of vancouver.

the next morning, i casually walked to the train station near my hostel, and got on the next train whenever that was, with an eventual destination of st.jean. it happened to be a 10:10am train.

10:10am didn't seem that significant to me then, but if it wasn't for that 10:10 train, i would have never met my current girlfriend when we both got off in st.jean.

we hiked the entire route to santiago together, there were good times, some bad times, but all times were worth it. of course, she lives in australia, i in canada, and that's a challenge in itself.

Ester,

Here is CURRENT August 2012 information on trains from Paris to SJPdP.

There are NO non-stop trains from Paris to SJPdP .

Once each day at 10h16 you can take a SNCF TGV (Tres Grand Express) from CdG Paris 2 airport to Bordeaux and then connect with a TGV to Bayonne

10h16/ CHARLES DE GAULLE 2 TGV/ Arrivée à :14h38 BORDEAUX SAINT JEAN/ Numéro du train :9802

18h41/ BAYONNE/ Arrivée à : 20h07 SAINT JEAN PIED DE PORT/ Numéro du train :67337

However the route is generally a TGV train from the Paris Gare Montparnasse to Bayonne and then a regional TER line 62 train from Bayonne to SJPdP. Generally there are 4 TGV trains to Bayonne from Paris each day.

If you wish you can take the regular overnight train from Paris Gare Austerlitz to Bayonne to connect with an early morning TER train to SJPdP.

You can see schedules up to 3 months in advance at this SNCF (French Nationl Rail Road ) link. http://www.voyages-sncf.com/. You NEED a reservation for any TGV train and it is cheaper to book the ticket well in advance. You can book both tickets on-line at the same time. However you can also book everything with a live clerk at the station the day of departure if you wish. If you take the mid morning train from Paris you can be in SJPdP by late afternoon.

West Coast Paul..... that is darling about meeting your girlfriend on el Camino. Pretty amazing how TIMING can be so important! You were obviously meant to catch that train!

Hello all on the site..... new to the forum. Looking to depart Seattle for Camino Frances at the mid-end of September.Spend a week in NJ/NY first and then fly into Barcelona first. Very much looking forward to the journey!!!!!!!!! (still have to purchase tickets, though) :D

I am planning to arrive at Paris CDG around 15 May this year and am weighing up the transport options from the Paris CDG airport to SJPP. I want to consider the cheapest cost / scenic ride or flight and least time consuming option. I have been looking at a flight / train or a bus and can not make up my mind on which to choose. Does anybody have advice please?

Well, maybe others will have other suggestions but i always love to start my contenental adventures from Paris. There is a fantastic hostel owned by the French govt in the absolute heart of the city with views of the Seine. It's near the metro, near the bus that goes to Montparnasse and near the Tour de St Jacques where Paris pilgrims like to start off from. So from there, there is a great fast train to Bayonne and the the little mountain train up to SJPP connects shortly from there. I dont know if that is the cheapest way... With the cheap airlines now, it probably isnt the cheapest but it may be the most scenic. So you might consider that option. Buen camino.

Natsnotfazed, I'm actually planning on arriving around the 15th of may myself :p If I'm lucky, I might get a cheap flight through Norwegian Air (from Helsinki where I live), around 82EUR, to Paris. The cheapest train to Bayonne I've found so far (through http://www.tgv-europe.com) is 19EUR in 2nd class, as people younger than 26 get a decent discount. Plus, it might be that the fare is cheaper due to advance booking, I checked how much it would be to take the trip today and it was around 100EUR, so I guess booking in advance is recommended? Not sure though, as this will be my first pilgrimage. And from Bayonne to St. Jean it's between 7-10EUR, so it should be pretty cheap :)

In total my travelling costs from Helsinki to SJPdP would be approx. 109EUR, which is not bad :D I'm sure there will be some fees (the flight I'm looking at only allows handheld luggage, but with proper luggage it would be like 30EUR more) plus probably a night spent in Paris due to train schedules but I'm hoping to couch surf or something to minimize the costs. We'll see what the future holds :) The first thing to do is buy myself a pair of decent boots to walk with. that's probably the most expensive part of the whole trip :D

:D :D Enjoyed the post by ncali12 in January 2013. It is thoughtful, informative and shows a love of travel and an appreciation of Paris and of history - The Tour St. Jacques, etc. I liked the originator's playful romantic update post after two years (2007-2009) of no answer. I enjoyed reading the frustrated response of someone actually looking for useful information who was bored by the romance. I found these exchanges a hoot and, thanks to ncali12, have a favorite plan for the start of our own trip.

RE: Buying train tickets online

If you are from the US, you need to be careful booking train tickets online. When you are filing in the search query, one of the questions asked is the country of ticket collection. If you pick the US, you will be diverted to a subsidiary of SNCF called Rail Europe. There you can expect to be gouged. For example, as an experiment the other day I tried a couple of searches:

All prices are in CAN$, but given current exchange rates, it makes almost no difference.
Paris - Toulouse
Rail Europe - $80
SNCF- $33

Toulouse - Bordeaux
Rail Europe - $34
SNCF - $20

Picking another country for ticket collection would be appear to be the simplest method of avoiding the problem. for full details, try looking at the section on France at http://www.seat61.com, which is actually a very useful site for anyone using the trains in Europe.

€2,-/day will present your project to thousands of visitors each day. All interested in the Camino de Santiago.
This is also a problem for Australian residents and there is an added charge for delivery. There are a couple of ways around the issue of being pushed onto another supplier.

Some journeys allow you to print your own ticket from your email. This has become my preferred option.

If this is not available, then select to pick up in France from the ticket machine. The machines are readily available. To do this you just have to insert the same credit card you used to purchase the ticket.

Thank you for this information. I am arriving in Paris from the North Carolina on 12 June; spending a few days w/friends and then begin my journey on 15 June. What is the name of the hostel you mentioned below? Thanks you! Buen Camino

Thank you all for this really helpful information. I'll be arriving May 5 in Paris, spending a day to visit Versailles. If there is anyone traveling to St. Jean from Paris around May 7 (or any day that week, my schedules are not final yet) and want to take the trains together, let me know.

For those leaving SJPDP on may 10th. I don't know if it is any use to you but I have transport arranged with Express Burricott from Biarritz airport to SJPdP on the 9th at 16:00. There is space available if it fits your plans and you want to share.

Thengel1,
Thank you for such a great resource! This was very helpful when trying to find out the best way to book my train ticket. I only have one question...would it be possible for me to purchase my train ticket directly through SNCF and pick up my tickets at the train station even though I live in the US?? I am seeing that going through SNCF's site is the only way I can purchase a direct train from Paris to SJPdP.

Yes, picking up at the station is very simple. All you need is the confirmation code they will send you after you purchase the ticket along with the credit card you used to make the purchase. It is important the card still be active, a cancelled card will cause large problems.

Dear All,

I like the idea of travelling with train to see more in France, so I decided to do so.

I tried to book a ticket from Paris to Biarritz on http://ventes.idtgv.com. It cost 59.9EUR. But there was a "Baggage Surcharge" "option" for 35eur. What does it mean? Should I pay extra 35eur if I have a backpack with me?

I was confused, so I tried http://www.tgv-europe.com. There the same ticket (ie: same day, same departure and destination time, same class) was 75eur. I could not find there any info about the cost of a baggage.

I am a bit of confused. Could somebody please help me out with the following info:

1, Should I pay extra for my backpack on the Paris -> Biarritz train?
2, Has anybody experience with http://ventes.idtgv.com? How could it be that they are cheaper than tgv-europe.com? (I mean without "options")?

Thank you for your help in advance.
Aniko

The 35 Euro supplement is if you are carrying more than 2 pieces of luggage.

I don't have any personal experience with IDTGV, but they seem to be part of TGV. They CAN be a source of cheaper tickets, if you can actually buy the tickets ( there have been reports of problems). In some cases, the IDTGV "train", is just another car added on to a regular TGV train.

Dear Thengel1,

Thank you for your clarification, it helped a lot.
I succeeded to book my train via iDTGV. (At least I got a confirmation letter with some "voyage file number".:))

I see that you set off soon, so:
Buen Camino!

I was looking at the two websites posted below and the trains departing from Paris to Bayonne are fully booked. Do I really need to book that far out in advanced? Or will there be remaining seats if I go directly to the train station?

lea_r,

Are your still planning to travel to SJPdp via Bayonne on May 7? as of this moment on the SNCF website only one train from PParis to Bayonne is fully booked leaving Paris at 17:28. All the other trains have seats. See this link now >> http://www.voyages-sncf.com/billet-trai ... at?hid=HBI.

You do NOT need a reservation for the TER line 62 train from Bayonne to SJPdP. Here is that current schedule >> Here is the CURRENT line 62 TER timetable for trains from Bayonne to SJPdP until July 6, 2013 >> http://telechargement.ter-sncf.com/Imag ... -42307.pdf.

By the way May 8 is a holiday in France celebrating the end of WWII and MANY people will be traveling during this time. Reservations are a good idea. You NEED a reserved seat to travel on the French TGV high speed train from Paris to Bayonne.

Bon voyage,

Margaret Meredith

Margaret thank you so much for this information. I was using the http://www.idtgv.com/en/ website where there are no more tickets for the 8th and the 9th. I've decided to book on the 7th but my credit cards (issued from Singapore) were not getting in. I finally gave up and emailed customer service. They replied the next morning and advised that my card has been unblocked for use. I was able to book successfully afterwards.

I know I pm'ed you this information already, just thought it would help anyone else reading this post. :)

I also noticed that some seats marked as already taken on the idtgv website gets assigned when i tried to book on the main site (http://www.voyages-sncf.com/). On the idtgv one can select his/her preferred seat (front-facing, window/isle, car#) while on the main site, it's assigned automatically.

How long does it take to get from Paris to SJPdP by Train?
Does it make more sense to fly into Pampalona and bus/train to SJPdP?

Hola bulwurth,
You also have the option of flying Paris-Biarittz (Bayonne) then train to SJPP, which I think will be easier than Pamplona - SJPP.

Re: Trains from Paris to St Jean Pied de Port

For trains from Bayonne to SJPdP from August 26, 2013 until December 14, 2013 see >> http://www.caminodesantiago.me/comm...-sjpdp-fall-2013-timetable.20171/#post-152561 All other info below is correct . MM

Basic information regarding Trains from Paris to St Jean Pied de Port

1. There are some trains that go from CDG airport. These are SNCF TGV (Tres Grand Express) from CdG Paris 2 airport to BORDEAUX and which then connect with another TGV to Bayonne and a TER line 62 train from Bayonne to SJPdP. Their departures may not correspond with your arrival time. For info about getting a TGV ticket at CDG or getting to Paris from CDG see this English language site http://www.easycdg.com/1/ground-transpo ... sdegaulle/

2. The route is generally a TGV train from the Paris Gare Montparnasse to Bayonne and then a regional TER line 62 train from Bayonne to SJPdP. Generally there are several TGV trains to Bayonne from Paris Montparnasse each day and many TER line 62 trains from Bayonne to SJPdP.

3. If you wish you could take the regular overnight train from Paris Gare Austerlitz to Bayonne to connect with a morning TER line 62 train to SJPdP.

You NEED a reservation for any TGV train and it is cheaper to book the ticket well in advance; you do NOT need a reservation for the TER line 62 which is open seating like a tram or Metro. You can buy both tickets on-line at the same time. However you can also book everything with a live clerk at the station the day of departure if you wish. If you take the mid morning train from Paris you can be in SJPdP by late afternoon.

You can see schedules up to 3 months in advance at this SNCF (French National Rail Road ) link. http://www.voyages-sncf.com/.

Bon Voyage and Buen Camino,

Ah that was the piece of the puzzle missing for us! Cool, We've got everything booked for our trip next month except the Bayonne to SJPP which we now know we can get when we arrive :D . Now to figure out how to get from Logrono back to Bayonne!

Thanks for the info :)

Hi all, thanks for all the helpful advice here. My flight arrives in CDG at 9:10 and I see the train to Bayone is scheduled for 10:16. Given the current immigration and security status, is this even realistic? Or should I plan on the later afternoon train? And if I book the early train and miss it, is there typically a penalty fare for rescheduling?

Thanks -- fritz

Fritz,

No, I do NOT believe that you have enough time between your scheduled landing and the time of the TGV train departure. There are many different types of SNCF TGV tickets sold on line at various prices according to wagon class, your age, and time between purchase and scheduled departure. If you plan to purchase your ticket before arrival in Paris be sure that your purchase format is marked Billet échangeable et remboursable in order to get your money back if the ticket is not used. Use this helpful English guide to learn more about TGV tickets at CDG airport; how to buy them and where the train stops. >> http://www.easycdg.com/1/ground-transportation/tgv-train-paris-cdg-airport-charlesdegaulle/

Rosemary

I am traveling to Paris for SJDP around this time too!

Trying to get the traveling "bugs" worked out is one of the more difficulties planning this trip. I think it's going to be easier from reading all the responses on here. Thank you all! Hopefully, I will make it there in one piece.

I took a Air France from Orly airport to Biarritz at a cost of $150 round trip and 90 minutes of travel time. The extra costs where a Bus from CDG to Orly at 20 Euro, and taxi from Biarritz airport to Bayonne train station at 26 Euros - actually you can take a bus for about 4 Euros which I didn't consider due to time constraints.

Came to this thread to learn something but through no ones fault I've come away stressed out! I simply cannot absorb travel within France at this stage. My ONLY plan is to book the flight to either Paris or Toulouse, deplane and simply go from there. Here's to hoping it all goes well.

Planning to walk April 2014 and must admit to some serious cold feet. If it wasn't for the packed backpacks STARING at me every morning and night in my bedroom I think I'd scrap this whole idea. Is it normal to experience this?

Hi Irène Elizabeth. I'm also aiming to start from SJPDP in April '14. I think it's perfectly normal to feel doubt about such a big decision. If it was easy it wouldn't hold the same attraction for so many pilgrims. It is so totally outside our comfort zone but yet the call of the Camino is getting ever stronger.

Thank you for your kind reply. I'm finding this whole thing rather overwhelming at present. Courage wanes, enthusiasm drains away...I have hardly been able to look at the forum without feeling nausea.

BUT - our backpacks sit quietly smiling in the corner saying"be of good cheer"

Unless a financial disaster occurs we will go FORWARD and I hope one day to wonder what we were ever fearful about.

Came to this thread to learn something but through no ones fault I've come away stressed out! ... Planning to walk April 2014 and must admit to some serious cold feet. If it wasn't for the packed backpacks STARING at me every morning and night in my bedroom I think I'd scrap this whole idea. Is it normal to experience this?
Absolutely normal! Where would be the fun if it were terribly easy and no big deal?

To walk from St Jean Pied-de-Port to Santiago seemed like a ridiculous idea yet the Camino call was so strong I was powerless to resist it. I found it easier not to focus on the distance as a whole and I set out with the intention of simply walking as far as I could. Walking day after day started to feel like the most natural thing in the world - it is, after all, what we are designed to do - and before I knew it I was in Santiago feeling like I could continue forever.

Your doubts may very well be with you even after you've set out on the Camino but your backpack is made for adventure and knows that all will be well. Trust in its quiet smile.

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.
I see there is a train to Bordeaux at 2 pm. You could spend the night there then travel to Bayonne and SJPP the next morning. I am traveling from CDG as well. I am hopeful they will add trains by the end of April.

SNCF is Frances train system. Trains go from Paris to Bordeaux. Transfer is often required before going on to Bayonne. Some trains require another transfer at Dax (destination board will likely read Pau Hendaye). Trains going from Bordeaux to Bayonne terminate in Irun or Hendaye. Note there is a difference between TER regional trains and the fast TGV trains.

Note that trains do leave from CDG. There is more frequent service to Bayonne from Gare Montparnasse.

You will get limited results if you try to find a schedule from Paris to SJPdP. I'd suggest getting from Paris to Bayonne then Bayonne to SJPdP.

Hi all,

Doing my first Camino end April 2014. As far as travel arrangements is concerned I've done quite a bit of research but getting some input from people with first hand experience is always best.

Flying into Paris the morning of the 25th of April. I'm planning to do some sight seeing during the day and catching either a high speed train or the night train to Bayonne in the evening. Currently the SNCF website do not yet have schedules that far out (seems to be only 90 days in advance). My question is how busy are the trains end April? Would I still be able to get a ticket for the high speed option on the day? For the night train it seems one must book a minimum of 10 days in advance and preferably I'd like to remain as flexible as possible.

Also how busy are the Santiago to Madrid trains end May/beginning of June? Whilst I've got a fixed date for when I'm flying out of Madrid I do intend to do some sightseeing after my Camino as well and would prefer not needing to book a train ticket in advance for the return to Madrid.

Many thanks,

CK007.

Hi Julie. I am also from Australia. Is it possible to print the ticket from Paris to Bayonne when booking the ticket online from Australia. We start our Camino Easter Monday.

Hi Marbuck, Paris to Bayonne is fine as you'll be given a choice to print out your ticket. The problem arose because that option wasn't always available. However, every year it becomes easier and easier to book online and in 2013 I made a number of bookings and was able to print out tickets for all of them. To book a ticket, use http://www.voyages-sncf.com/billet-train which is in French or the English version which is at http://en.voyages-sncf.com/en/

If you are trying to book tickets and the site bumps you to Rail Europe, simply change the pick up option and say you're going to pick up the tickets in France. If there is no option to print out the ticket, you'll be able to retrieve it from a machine using the same credit card you used to purchase it.

I sometimes do a check on the fare using the French version of SNCF, the English one and Rail Europe. Surprisingly I did on one occasion find Rail Europe had a better price than the SNCF site.

Thanks Julie, great advice. Now I just have to wait a few more weeks to be able to book our tickets.

We just booked, paid for (using an Australian credit card) and printed our tickets (on our computer), from Paris to Bayonne on the http://en.voyages-sncf.com/en/train-ticket site. Very easy, the only difficult part was working out what station in Paris to put into the "from" section on the booking form. Just remember to put in PARIS MONTPARNASSE 1 ET 2 and you wont have a problem.
The next thing we have to do is book a hotel room in Bayonne. Has anybody stayed at the Hotel Monte Carlo? I notice it is opposite the train station, how quiet is it for sleeping?

There is a 2pmish train to bordeaux that puts you there at 7 pm. Then take the morning train on to Bayonne and SJPP. Hotel in bordeaux about 60 euro for 2..... I leave April 24

Plug 'Bayonne Hotel Monte Carlo' into the Search area at the top of the page. Seems to be quite a few threads about it, and other options. Ask for a quiet room if you decide to stay there. Then you takes your chances.
From memory I searched it out on Google Earth street view once.

I enjoy reading these posts so much. I mean that in all sincerity. I am also fascinated that many a folk write about the Camino "Starting" in San Jean. It's an interesting cultural phenomenon. Just an observation...

Hello. Great to see some people who will be walking in April. I will be starting from SJPP April 17th. I am undecided what to do about train tickets. I have lived in France twice, and rarely did I purchase tickets well in advance while traveling. When I did, purchasing them in advance didn't necessarily mean cheaper tickets. My flight arrives at CDG at 7 in the morning, and I think I saw that the train for Lourdes (as I will be spending a few days there before starting from SJPP) leaves at 8:30 and 2pm. I am hesitant to buy train tickets beforehand for the 8:30 train and have something happen and miss it. Have most of you purchased train tickets in advance or wait until you got there? Sorry - I know this seems a redundant question, but any advice would be appreciated!

In my experience planes almost never arrive on time and sometimes are quite late. It's your time appreciation; it all depends on how comfortable you are with the prospect of travel plans going askew.

Here are the scenarios ... you get to assign the probabilities and make plans to deal with each possibility.
a. everything goes like clockwork and you have enough time to buy a ticket at the station.
b. you arrive late and can only make the train if you already have a ticket.
c. you arrive too late to catch your train. Can you exchange your ticket or eat the loss?

See the SNCF schedule for trains leaving from Gare Montparnasse and Gare Austerlitz for plan B. Its an hour by RER and Metro from CDG2 via Gare du Nord to Montparnasse Bienvenue plus 15 minutes walk to Gare Montparnasse.

I have twice travelled from Montparnasse to Biarritz/Bayonne.
Bought the tickets on-line and have not paid more than 35 Euros.
Tickets are available from 90 days out. I buy as early as possible - put a note on my diary.
I like to spend a night in Paris - keeps a few hours up my sleeve in case of travel delays.

(st.jean pied-du-port)
i would like to take a train so that i can see some a bit of france on my way there, but i know nothing about the trains there.
can anyone help me figure out where to look up scheduals, and where i can expect to get a train?
do i pay there or do you have to book ahead/get ticket online?

oh man, do i have things to organize. been too busy getting my place ready for a three-month sublet.

thanks for your help,
paul

I flew into Paris as well and took a bus from the airport to Bayonne. It got later in the afternoon, so I stayed overnight then took the early train to St. Jean. Smooth trip. If the bus got in eatlier I would have gone straight to SJ

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.
It seems there are many options to get to St Jean. What I have done is to add one more adventure into the walk on the Camino to Santiago. I will be flying into Heathrow on the 2nd of April, from the US, and taking the Eurostar High Speed Train via the channel tunnel to Paris. Change stations in Paris and take the TGV from Montparnasse to Bayonne arriving around 2230 on the 2nd. On the morning of the 3rd, on to St Jean.

Have my bag packed....just waiting for the day of departure to arrive!

Hope to meet some of you folks on the road,

Last year I travelled from Montparnasse but this year I am going from CDG airport and have a 30 min break (enough time for a vino) at Bordeaux which links to the train from Montparnasse, the ticket prices are showing as 67 euro at the moment.

thank-you for the kind reminder, trevor. i rarely check the email associated with this site, so it was good timing considering i have been thinking of this trip as of late. i feel the need to go back to visit the part of me i left behind.

also, all the best for your trip, sept.4 is a good date!

i just got an email notification saying my thread had a reply, so i thought i'd drop in after posting two years ago.

i never did get that train from CDG airport. the travel assistance there had no idea where st.jean was, so i figured i'd hop on a random train into paris, walk around, get a good sleep, and think it over in the morning. i wasn't travelling to be in any hurry anyway. walking up and out of the tunnel to be face-to-face with notre dame was worth it, with my last sight being of vancouver.

the next morning, i casually walked to the train station near my hostel, and got on the next train whenever that was, with an eventual destination of st.jean. it happened to be a 10:10am train.

Such a cool story! One of you will have to move!

it was a great story to live, but unfortunately the cards folded upon themselves and it didn't work out. it's amazing what the camino can give and take away (in a good way). the complications arise when one is back within their own ill-defined caminos at home :)

Hi Paul, I will be leaving Paris on the 2nd September with my husband to St Jean Pied de Port and starting my Camino on the 3rd September. Hopefully we will see you on the road. We will be walking the whole Camino and meeting my family who live in Vigo at the end of it. We are sooooo excited. If you have any questions just ask I may be able to help.

Cheers Sonia

@Sonia Formoso Conde welcome to the forum, and don't forget to put yourself in the calendar. You will find lots of other forum members are leaving about the same time. Buen Camino!

Hi Sonia, I'm sort of new to this forum and sometimes find it difficult following a thread. It looked to me that Paul was travelling back in 2007. I am flying into Paris on September 3 2016 and will be looking for the best way to get to SJPDP. I am assuming that train is the best way, but still a bit foggy about how to find all the schedules. Also I don't want to arrive in SJPDP too late in the evening so was wondering if it would be better to plan on spending a night in Biarritz? Then getting to SJPDP the next day, spending an evening there and then start the trek early the next morning. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

Take the train from Paris to Bayonne not Biarritz. Spend the night in Bayonne and early next morning take the TER local train to SJPdP. For train schedules see www.voyages-SNCF.com.

Hi mspath - many thanks for your reply so quickly. I have been up to my eyeballs reading earlier parts of this thread. I SO appreciate the kindness and willingness of people to be helpful. So Bayonne it is.

That's a good choice! If you need a good, simple little hotel in Bayonne try the Monte-Carlo which faces the rr station. It has a pleasant cafe/restaurant also.

Bon voyage and Buen camino!

Wanderlust57,

For lots of info re travel from Paris to SJPdP check out this recent forum thread.

Here is some info re the camino in Paris to help you plan your journey.

Since you are beginning a pilgrimage these two Parisian religious groups who offer accommodation may be of interest; the Freres Aveniat and the basilica of Sacre Coeur.

For secular accommodation in Paris have you tried CouchSurfing, AirBnB or searched Hostelworld for individual rooms?

Check out these earlier Forum threads for more about pilgrim sites in Paris and the camino in Paris.

When on the parvis or place facing the Notre Dame cathedral below you underground lie Roman ruins and visible to your right across the Seine begins the medieval rue Saint Jacques which pilgrims followed to leave the city; walk it a bit and ponder history.

Take a deep breath, relax and just enjoy it! As an American who has lived 35+ years in France both in Paris and Champagne even after all those years for me as Thomas Jefferson wrote “a walk about Paris will provide lessons in history, beauty, and in the point of life.”

Bon Chemin and Buen Camino!
