Asking for Info

I am considering walking the Arles Camino and have reached Toulouse in the planning stage. The Camino turns north west and heads for the Pyrenees and Jaca(!). Looking at maps and guides I have come across the area south and west of Toulouse in the Pyrénées-Orientales and am intrigued. Places like Saint -André-de-Sorède, Saint-Génis-des-Fontaines, Saint Michel-de-Cuxa, Saint Martin-du-Canigou for example. Two separate areas propably not connected by a GR or a lesser known Camino. Does anyone have have any knowledge of the area? Where to look? I have a wonderful publication of the Quest France publishers intended for driving no help for walkers. I would be happy to hear from you all and anything at all youall might know. Thanks again

To begin check out the French Topo-guides shown on this map and published by the FFRandonnee ie the Fédération Française de la Randonnée Pédestre.

Click on any bubble for more info. Number 6600 includes both Saint-Martin du Canigou and Saint-Michel de Cuxa.

Another good French web site to consult is the boutique of the IGN. Their map sheet 2349ET is for the Massif-Du-Canigou. You may find other IGN maps of interest in this index/filter set for Languedoc-Roussillon

We did the Arles route over three years using mainly the Miam Miam Dodo guide. I can't think of any part I would like to omit. One of my favorites was over the Pyrenees, and particularly, San Juan de la Pena just beyond Jaca.

In my library I have several books from the Quest France publishers, Romanesque Art in Languedoc-Roussillon, Abbeys of Burgundy, Roanesque Art in Midi-Pyrenees , another on Conques lovely photographs, enough information to decide if and when to visit but no maps no trails few roads. Time to go to work! I enjoy the maps, the decisions which when to go, almost as much as actually walking.

Thank you backpack! MMD is a must and I'm not considering to omit ever, always looking for a sidetrip, a walkabout, something just off the margins of the guides and recommendations.

I just did a search on the first book mentioned and also one on Quest France publishers, but came up empty handed. I also searched on google.fr

Thanks, Scruffy. I just ordered it. Romanesque architecture was kind of the plain-jane sister of the Gothic style when I studied European art history. I have been studying French in my retirement and I look forward to tackling the French text.

Hello. I plan to walk the route from Arles as from end of August. Was there any particular reason why you began in Toulouse... I rather want to pass St Guilhem le Desert. I realise that there are some industrial estates on the way into and out of Montpellier....

Just wanted to say that the new Miam Miam Dodo 2016/17 is available directly from the publishers. Do you recommend another guide as well for the history etc?
