Lisbon - Santarém to Fatima

For some reason my feet are itching after a period of troubles with my knee. Though I never stopped moving about, had to take things more slowly and not strain it too much.
So right now I'm trying to sort in just a few days to go walk from Lisbon to Fatima, though I have difficulty finding information on it. There are 2 routes, but its not clear to me.
As I am leaving in just 2 days, I had 3 days sorting out tickets, packing spontaniously and then saw the route.
Decided to go walk 'hopefully' the nice route to Santarém, dnno what my knee is going to do though, so I would love to not be stuck in the middle of nowhere.
I got 2 thumbs though, so I could always hitch a ride

What I find hard to sort out is the part of Santarém to Fatima, is it all on asphalt?
Does anybody know some cheap places to stay on this part of the track?

Maybe I will just walk to Santarém and take a train back to Lisbon and explore some other parts, who knows what happens on a walk.....better to be prepared, yet not make too many plans.

Any helpfull information would be very much appriciated!

Also, if I follow the arrows to Santarém the same way as the Santiago de Compostela route, will I be walking by the river and come in to a town called Cartaxo?

Ola - you can walk to Santarem - and Mario @ the Santarem Hostel will provide good info how to best proceed - and no need to actually go into Cartaxo (a small town) - follow the river Tejo - gorgeous route, once you have left Azambuja.
That route passes a small place Ponte de Muge - where you can stay in a Quinta da Marchanta for 20 euros (paid in May 2014) (directly on the caminho)
will look for further info in my files.

hope this link works. shows the map from azambuja to santarem - flat terrain. no need to pass through Cartaxo.

Ask Diogo92 . He walked to Fatima a week ago. Took an alternative route.
He will be willing to tell you all

Thank you Amorfati1m its more that just in case my knee acts up, then I can go there. I am now listening better to my body than before as I know how stubborn I can be haha
I did find information on Mario as well from another thread I found on here and a very helpfull file to shorten some stages.
Alberthinho, I don't know how to ask someone or to find something as all is new to me, perhaps I can find some of his posts or you could explain to me on how to do so?

the last bit up to the Hostel / town on santarem might be a bit of a challenge for a wonky knee (it's UP the hill...and i mean UP!)
if you stay with Mario (i.e. book accommodation with him) - give him a ring when you reached the incline - and he'd probably be willing to pick you up @ the bottom of the hill. from Ponte de Muge to Santarem it's approx 15-16km walking - and the town is lovely. plan to stay an extra day - much to explore and lovely sights. and good food!

It is easy Sara. If you click on my picture - called "an avatar" - and you see "start a conversation". And it is just easy as that. Only the one you send the conversation, gets the message.
So go back on this Portugese forum and you'll find Diogo92 very easily.
