On the 22th of July i will fly to Santander and than go by bus to Oviedo; i will arrive there about 19.00 hrs
and probably the albergue will be full (and the comments are not very well). Any suggestions for a (cheap) place for an individual to sleep?

Hi, Willem, Welcome to the forum! I take it you will be walking the primitivo? If so, you are in for one heck of a beautiful camino.

There are many cheap places near the bus station, and you will see them just walking around. But my favorite cheap place is the Pensión Arcos, which is right in the old town and near the cathedral. It is run by two very nice young men, and it´s very clean. Highly recommended.

They used to publish their rates, but I see that they don´t anymore. I would suggest writing to them and telling them you are a pilgrim and see what they offer. I bet it will be around 25€ for a single.

Buen camino, Laurie

We have stayed in the Hostal Oviedo, opposite the station and near the bus station near the corner of Calle Uria. This year we will stay at the Favila, a few door down the street as Hostal Oviedo is full for our dates. Both are a reasonable price.

Wow, that´s a huge price increase from what I paid several years ago, when I´m absolutely sure it was in the 20s. Where did you see that price? Thanks.
I have just checked this out on booking.com and in May it gives a single room at 35€ - no breakfast, and 40€ in July for a single.
The Favila is 32€ in July and the Hostal Oviedo is 23€ in low season so higher in July.
[Edit - It is worth checking out the booking websites for prices and the hotels own webpages where you can find them. Gronze has a list of some private accomodation along the Caminos and in the towns.]

Thanks, Tia, this is great information. I do agree that the Arcos is a great location, as falcon says, but I don´t think I can continue to recommend it as a great budget option since it is so much more than the ones you have indicated.

I have heard the Los Arcos highly recommended but 40 might be a bit steep. It is always worthwhile to ask for the tarifa de peregrino and I have found accommodation at all levels fairly flexible if you are there outside fiestas and the high season.

Ideal pocket guides for during & after your Camino. Each weighs only 1.4 oz (40g)!
I stayed at Hostal Alvarez which is in a terrific location, had wifi, a twin room with private shower and cost me €25 last October. On booking.com now it's €28 for the 22 July.

I have a pic of the room I stayed in on my blog here.

Buen Camino!

This is a generic question I have been meaning to ask for ages, has anybody tried couchsurfing on the camino?

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.

We stayed in Hotel Overtense,a short walk to the Cathedral.Three of us were charged 22E each

Thank you all for your reply's!
I received a mail of hostal alvarez Oviedo, in July single room € 25,-.

I stayed at Hostal Arcos in September 2014 and was under impressed. The host was not helpful or friendly and it smelled strongly of cigarette smoke despite being non-smoking. It was not inexpensive. Looks like there are plenty of other options in equally great locations.

Well, that´s a second reason to take the Hostal Arcos off my list of recommended places. Too bad, because the location is so excellent, but I guess that the next time I go I´ll head down to the area around the bus station. The Hostal Alvarez is in a great location, near the bar where I had some outstanding tapas that can only be described as shrimp corn dogs (and maybe that definition will only resonate from my US Midwestern friends). :) It was amazing. buen camino, Laurie

Hello Willemstad H,

Assuming you are talking about the Hotel Vetusta, that is a great price and a great location. Charming, too. And lots of homemade cakes and pastries for breakfast, at least if it´s still running like it was a few years ago.

Well, I just googled around and found out that my memory was right. On the same street as the Alvarez is the Bar Paloma,
http://www.cafeterialapaloma.com/

Very traditional place, everyone´s drinking vermouth, and their specialty is what they call Gambas al buñuelo, which I think translates as shrimp in a fritter or something, so my shrimp corn dog idea wasn´t so far fetched afterall.

Yes -- I too booked it for $50 through booking.com which I think is about the same for 7/8 June. We wanted a bit of a treat to make sure we got good solid sleep and time to get over jet lag before we start walk on 9/June! L

Shame about hostal Arcos. I have stayed there several times, the last being in 2012 when it was still good and a single was 25 euros.

We stayed there two years ago and I can't recommend it enough. It's centrally placed, nicely decorated rooms, friendly staff ( I think that it's run by 3 ladies) and the home made cakes and pastries....delicious. They made us fresh sandwiches for our lunch ( their own baked bread). Definitely worth considering! Anne

I stayed at the Hotel Vetusta in July 2013. Stayed two nights and it was a great location to stay, get over jet lag a bit and spend a day exploring some of this lovely city before starting the Primitivo.

Stayed at Hostal Romero (http://www.hostalromero.net) on calle Uria (main drag) last fall. 25 Euros for a single room with ensuite and AC. When I got there they only had a double room but let me have it for the price of a single.

Hi, last year I spent 2 nights in Victoria Eugenia's flat. She is a very nice woman renting 2 rooms of her hourse for pilgrims. The cost is cheap, less of 18 euro. This is her facebook address: https://www.facebook.com/victoriaeugenia.graobelmonte ciao!

Hello Willem! :)
I just reserved a room at Hostal Oviedo, which is close to the bus & train stops. They have good ratings & good rates. I would book directly with them:http://www.hostaloviedo.com/
I found they gave me a slightly better rate than bookit & priceline.
I got a double, but it looks like the singles are 23 euros.
Good luck to you :)

€2,-/day will present your project to thousands of visitors each day. All interested in the Camino de Santiago.
This s a bit of an old thread but I thought that podted to it might be interested to know there is a new albergue in Oviedo, at no. 8 calle Covadonga. Also, San Salvador is currently hsving some renovations done so at of 2-3 weeks ago it was 1 loo for all.

Hust stayed at Vetusta after reading the recommendations here and loved it! Great splurge.

What do you recommend for Madrid?
