Anyone with a Type D Long Stay visa in Schengen area

Hi all, good morning, I've read the awesome visa thread about stays longer than 90 days -- thanks to the prior posters.

What I'd like to do is connect with anyone who has actually received a Type D visa and or done a longer term stay (longer than 90 days, shorter than a year). The closest Spanish consulate to me is Chicago. I read the document requirements on their site -- Before I schedule the appointment and make the trip, I was curious to know if anyone who has done this has any extra advice / war stories / tips / hints?

Do you know if you can talk with someone in the office first to confirm the correct paperwork?

I have never received a type D long term visa but France does offer a simple one year tourist visa (a little different and a lot less work than getting a long term or type D visa from Spain for example).

Basically the same general rules apply - you will need some form of accommodation in France and sufficient funds or income as per France in order to get the visa. After six months you will need to have medical check up too in France

However generally speaking for this visa or any other long term visa, you are still restricted on how long you can stay outside your host country (France for example) in the Schengen Region - max 90 days.

With no border checks, how do they enforce that? The 90-days can be enforced at airports of arrival and departure with the new computer scan technology, but borders inside the Schengen area?

Good question but the wording on the long term type D visa normally has this restriction. If, how they enforce is anybody's guess.

With France as with countries like Italy there are requirements to make periodic visits to various local government agencies so it is sometime challenging to simple leave and go an extended walk....
