My wife is excited. Our college age daughter is excited. I'm excited.

Plans are being laid for our Camino to start shortly after our daughter's fall semester ends next year. Honestly they are both so excited that if we were not hiking across England this year, and if we did not already have plane & train tickets in hand, then I think that we'd do it this summer.

I believe we have pretty much all the gear/clothing required, but will probably have to replace a fleece, a shirt, or whatever we may wear out between now and then.

I need to explore far more closely the "travel CPAP" machines.

I expect that we will alternate between small hotels/inns and albergues. My wife wants to plan a couple 'tourist' days along the route. Probably an extra day each in Burgos, Leon, Cebreiro? Those appear to be the larger cities along the route but we are certainly open to suggestions from the group if there is a city that might be a highlight we might pass up without your recommendation.

FWIW, before/after the Camino we will likely spend no extra time in Spain. We spent Easter in Saville a couple years ago, have traveled other areas of Spain pretty extensively (much of it on foot).

Get a spanish phone number with Airalo. eSim, so no physical SIM card. Easy to use app to add more funds if needed.
Personally I loved Burgos. The Cathedral there is the most beautiful I have ever seen, there are some great restaurants and sights and things to do. We spent two days and I could have spent more.
Leon is also nice and the Cathedral is well set up for tourists. You'll see a lot of other peregrinos taking a rest day there too.

burgos and león merit at least an extra day. santiago at least another one (or two). o cebreiro is so small it's over before it began (but one of my favourites). Buen Camino!

hi... Leon, I spent 2 full days there (keeping a new Camino friend company) heaps to do and see in Leon / Burgos spent a day again heaps to see and do / Santa Domingo de la Calzada, because I wanted to visit San Millán Yuso and Suso Monasteries, where the Spanish language was 'born' (the Suso Monastery being the oldest in Spain 6th Century) http://whc.unesco.org/en/list/805 so spent the night in Santa Domingo then arranged for a cab the following morning to take me to the Monastery for a visit and back again, well worth the visit, note that there is a hotel at the Monastery complex; Astorga... with it's fabulous cathedral and museum (3 hours) and Gaudi Palace (another 2 hours) http://www.gaudiexperiencia.com/architecture-work/episcopal-palace-astorga and the main square with heaps of restaurants and sights to see; I also wanted to spent a 'slow' day in Sarria, so ended my previous day 3.6km from Sarria and stayed at a fabulous private Albergue (private room for single people, 2 beds still, private bathroom for 25 Euro), great meal http://www.palomaylena.com/info.htm .. then set off the next day after a hearty breakfast at 9am, arrived in Sarria at 10am and did a lot of exploring, had a fantastic dinner in Sarria at Matias http://www.tripadvisor.at/Restaurant_Review-g580333-d2715916-Reviews-Matias_Locanda_Italiana-
and yes, I'm a 'bad' pilgrim - walking the Camino on my own at my very slow pace (50 days), when in the main cities I book a hotel treat: in Astorga, literally 2 blocks from the cathedral http://www.hotelciudaddeastorga.com/en/hotel; in Burgos in the same square as the cathedral http://www.mesondelcid.es/EN/gallery.html; in Leon Hotel Q!H which is literally a behind the cathedral and a great central spot in the old part of town http://www.hotelqhcentroleon.com/; in Santo Domingo de la Calzada there are 2 Parador's I choose the one on the main square http://www.parador.es/es/paradores/parador-de-santo-domingo-de-la-calzada;... bad bad pilgrim I am, I sought out some luxury!!! other than this I stayed in shared standard albergues / refugios... for 3 weeks... and then selected albergues / Refugio's with private rooms (habitacion individual por favour) as I desperately needed quiet sleep time, for couples (2-3) people this ends up costing almost the same per person as a bunk bed in a shared 'dorm' type room..

happy planning and Buen Camino

Sarria_Lugo_Province_Galicia.html (old town on the Camino route on the way out of town), plenty to see and do in Sarria before the final leg

Just curious, any Roman era ruins along the route? My daughter is a national Latin scholar (not sure the exact name) and we are all history buffs. We've visited Roman ruins in other parts of Spain. Curious what exists along this route?

Wow, thanks for the tips and links.

Guess I need to dig through the guide books more closely!

The camino path west from Carrion de los Condes follows in part the old Roman route from Bordeaux to Astorga. Near Calzadilla de la Cueza but off the camino is a splendid Roman villa, La Tejada. Within Astorga right on the camino are excavated Roman ruins including mosaics and a bath.

Sounds like an extra night's stay in this area is something that we should consider. :)

Nowadays it's said/suggested that Spanish was born in Valpuesta. See this link for more info:

Not too far away from Mansilla de las Mulas, there are the (Astur)-Roman ruins of Lancia.

hi... I was reading a new thread a few minutes ago about discounts offered at the Paradors for under 35's and over 55's - I posted the following reply: ... here's some information which entitles EVERYONE :) to a discount - I picked up a Posadas del Camino loyalty card from the reception desk at Hotel Roncesvalles and was given a little information leaflet with the card - basically there are hotels / guest houses which have signed up to this association and when making your reservation or just walking in to any of these hotels you simply show your card and qualify for a standard 10% - 15% discount - I must admit that I stayed in quiet a few of their listed spots - regardless of where you start each of the hotels in this association along the Camino Frances has these cards in their reception area, you just need to pop in and ask for one http://www.posadasdelcamino.com/asociacion/ - well worth it
