We are planning to travel via Alsa bus from Bilbao to Gijon; then from Gijon to Lugo. On a Sunday, Oct. 4.
When I try to plan via ALSA site, I get conflicting responses on times -- and even if the buses run on Sundays.
I can't seem to get through to Alsa customer service to verify. Does anyone know for sure?

I'm not sure about why are you getting conflicting info. I get the same info in the schedules area of the web of Alsa than in the purchasing zone. Anyway, you don't need to break the journey in Gijón unless you want to make it for some specific reason. On Sundays, there are 3 direct buses from Bilbao to Lugo departing from Bilbao at 01:45 a.m.; 14:45 and 18:45 respectively. If for whatever reason you want to spend part of that day in Gijón, there are departures from Bilbao to Gijón at 01:45 a.m.; 8:30 a.m. (arrival at 12:30 p.m.); 10:30 a.m. (arrival at 16:00); 12:05 p.m. (arrival at 16:05) and some later departures that may make your time in Gijón too (much) short (depending, of course on why you want to make a stop there). Departures from Gijón to Lugo are at 7:00 a.m.; 8:00 a.m. and 23:00. There are some other departures from Gijón to Lugo but involve a change of buses along the route.

PESA provides hourly bus service from Bilbao (Loiu) Airport direct to San Sebastian(Donostia).

PESA and ALSA both provide bus service from San Sebastian/Donostia to Biarritz Airport.

...and PESA has a direct bus from Bilbao to Biarritz airport (on working days, i.e. except weekends and public holidays) at 07:00 a.m. that can be useful for those wanting to have a rest day (or more) in Bilbao on their way back.

Renfe provides train service from Santiago to Irun/Hendaye.

...and ALSA provides bus service from Santiago de Compostela to Irún (including an overnight one). PESA has one bus from Irún to Biarritz airport (except on weekends and public holidays) that could be a good connection for those comming on the overnight bus from Santiago de Compostela. If the Schedule of PESA's bus from Irún to Biarritz airport doesn't suit you, it would be better to take the Alsa bus from Santiago de Compostela to San Sebastián (aka Donostia). From San Sebastián, PESA offers daily bus services to Biarritz airport.

Sarria

Empresa Freire connects Santiago to Lugo. Most but not all buses stop enroute at the Santiago Airport. Monbus connects Lugo to Sarria. The transfer point is the Lugo bus station.

Sometimes it is more time efficient to take Empresa Freire bus from Santiago Labcolla airport to Santiago bus station (every half hour) and catch another bus to Lugo.

Monbus has buses from Santiago bus station to Monforte de Lemos and buses from Monforte de Lemos to Sarria.

Renfe provides service to Sarria on trains running between Monforte de Lemos and Betanzos-Infesta. These trains originate in Madrid, Barcelona, etc and terminate in A Coruña or Ferrol. Trains from Santiago usually require a transfer at A Coruña, Ourense, or Monforte de Lemos. If you plan to get from Santiago to Sarria ... use the bus.
