Monasteries for Pilgrims

AdaR

Wannabe Pilgrim
Time of past OR future Camino
2015 biked CF; 2017 Portuguese by foot, bus, train (injury).
I just read of the Benedictine Monastery at Monte Irago, and am looking forward to a stop over there.
Is anyone aware of other active monasteries along the Camino Frances that open their doors to Pilgrims?
Also, if you have stayed at any of them, would you be willing to share a bit about your experience?

The albergue in San Juan de Ortega is located in a former monastery. All pilgrims should stay there at least once, if for no other reason than to pay homage to an old treasure.

€2,-/day will present your project to thousands of visitors each day. All interested in the Camino de Santiago.
AdaR,

Here is my personal inventory of active monasteries/convents along the CF which do accept pilgrims.

Amongst these examples are successful and poor examples of architectural adaptive re-use, retro fitting and contemporary additions. Much to view and ponder. For location info and basic photos see the Eroski site Etapas and albergues . For more personal comments and /or photos see each location as cited in my Camino Gazetteer. For more info on Benedictine monasteries see here.

Roncevalles, three albergues; the new, the old and the winter, in monastery structures

Trinidad de Arre, in a monastery garden

Santo Domingo de la Calzada, Nuestra Sra. de la Anunciacion, in monastery

Carrion de los Condes, monasterio de Santa Clara, in monastery wing and albergue Espiritu Santo, in monastery wing

Sahagun, albergue de las Madres Benedictinas, in monastery

Leon, albergue del monasterio de las Benedictinas (Carbajalas), in monastery

Carracedo del Monasterio, albergue, in monastery grounds

Samos, Albergue del Monasterio de Samos, in monastery wing

Sarria, albergue Monasterio de la Magdalena, in monastery wing

Two other monasteries which are not listed on the Eroski list cited above are

and north of Melide, Sobrado dos Monxes, Santa Maria do Sobrado monastery at this site

Happy planning and Buen Camino!

And to taste the morcilla bocadilo served next door.
Oh, I looked longingly, and with some nostalgia, at that. We make a similar, much loved 'bunwich' out of that back in my home country (except we don't call it morcilla, or even blood pudding; we call it 'black pudding'). But now that I no longer eat meat, or meat products, I could not indulge in it when I was on Camino. I was tempted, but I just couldn't. :(

San Juan de Ortega is indeed located in a former monastery - should you decide to stay over everyone will know all about it since the aroma of mold and the smell of mildew will follow you for several days. The place is cool summertime but absolutely freezing the rest of the year. Take a good look at the wonderful church and walk on. Samos is also very very cold Spring Winter and Fall but they do wake you up with music. The old monastery in Roncesvalles also reminded one of a commercial freezer with the addition of cold showers, the new buildings have corrected this problem.
Santa Clara during busy seasons is crowded approaching unbearable while Espirtu Santo is wonderful!
Monasteries are certainly part of the Camino experience but choose them well!

Carrion de los Condes also has the Monastery of San Zoilo which is now, I gather, a rather good hotel.

I stayed at the Samos Monastery in May, 2014 and consider it to have been well worth the 3 or 4 k detour. It is artistically painted and has all necessary facilities. Plus, there is a very accommodating cafe/bar right across the street. The cost was typical of church operated albergues-donation or about 5€. I took several photos of it that are available on the Forum.

Wrong side of St Jean, sorry, but the Franciscan House, Zabalik, at Saint-Palais (1, Xibaltarre Hiribidea) is a delight. You are given a cell on the first floor, very simple, and are included in the evening meal and breakfast. When last I was there it consisted of just the Prior and one friar, with two women from the town doing the cooking a serving. The Prior was hoping that "father will send us some young brothers from the Philippines" - (the call to the robe is growing there). Built as a rectangle with an inner open area it is a haven of calm and tranquility, they have a large and unused cottage garden - such a perfect place to renew!

Just a comment, that even although you might be staying within the walls or grounds of a monastery, it doesn't mean that you will be involved in partaking with the monastical rites, unless you really ask .

Annakappa, thank you for noting this. While the old monastery buildings have great appeal, I am inquiring about active monasteries that allow and encourage participation in their rituals.

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.

Great list. Thank you, margaret. I will start looking into these.

I have attended evening services, usually vespers, at those active monasteries listed on my inventory posted above except Carracedo where I have not yet stopped. Generally all visiting 'outsiders' were made to feel welcome. Truly extra-ordinary was the gracious welcome and the snowy winter vespers service at Roncesvalles, 29/01/2009 where I was the solitary 'outsider' with 3 monks. What a privilege it was!

Santo Domingo de Silos is not on the Camino but if you are looking for the monastic experience it is well worth a visit. It is 65 kilometers South east of Burgos. There is one bus Monday to Saturday from Burgos. It is a workers' bus and leaves Silos at 8.00 am approx and leaves Burgos 5.30 pm. Monday to Friday, may be different on Saturdays.

I try to include a visit there especially if I am beginning in Burgos. I always stay three nights so that I have two full days there. The bus arrives shortly after 7.00 pm so I can attend vespers almost immediately and Compline at 9.00 ,I think.

Following the ancient custom of monasteries men can stay with the community and as far as I know partake in their daily life. I think that one has to stay 3 nights.

The monks there sing the Divine office each day. The monastery has the most wonderful cloister, a double one which is most unusual and the carvings on the pillars are extraordinarily beautiful. There are tours of the cloister, ground floor, and the pharmacy. I usually do the tour on both days that I am there. The tour is in Spanish but I have found that the guides speak slowly and clearly and are easy to understand. Even if one cannot understand a word of Spanish one can see.

Pilgrims can attend the vespers of the Cisterciense Sisters in Santo Domingo de la Calzada. You will sit separately from them (actually you won't see them) as they sing the psalms and bible passages in Spanish. They operate an albergue as well. You get to vespers by entering through the hotel entrance at the back of the building.

I never expected to find this information on the monasteries readily available and I hope it turns up in the reference section. I'm thoroughly enjoying your beautifully written blog!! Thanks so much for your invaluable contributions here.

I stayed at the Franciscan Monastery (Les Franciscains) on 27-Sep-2013. It was very pleasant. But it was no longer a Franciscan Monastery but a pilgrimage centre run by Les Amis du Chemin de Saint-Jacques. A very courteous older Belgian couple acting as volunteers were on duty that time. I understood that the Franciscan community had left some years earlier.

St Palais was a stopover on my Camino from Bordeaux to Santiago. It was indeed very restful and needed since the next day's walk to St Jean Pied de Port included a steep climb - the first major ascent after the very flat Les Landes section south of Bordeaux

Just one addition to the very thorough list @mspath has provided above:
In Zabaldika, heading towards Pamplona, take the path up to Barrio San Esteban - beautifully renovated accommodation operated by the welcoming RSCJ Sisters (Society of the Sacred Heart) in parish building adjacent to the 13thC iglesia de San Esteban with beautiful altarpiece retablo and statue of St. James. That would be very useful for me, so I am assuming others would appreciate it as well.
Thank you!

Hi Jill and according to Brierley has a price per room to match - 3* (so around E100 per night). Cheers.
Yes, sadly. I remember when an injured pilgrim was hosted there for several weeks, for free. The religious were still running it. Who owns it now, I wonder?

I look forward to learning of new finds along your way. Do stop at Saint Sernin before you set out; it truly is splendid.

Bon chemin and as always, Utreia!

You can stay for a few days with the monks in Rabanal. It's not an albergue to spend a night but a place for a retreat.
Yes it is intended for a spiritual rest. In 2014 I stayed here for 3 days and enjoyed the tranquility of the place. Fr. Pius is an excellent cook and makes all his own preserves. I you can a fford to spend a few days from your Camino do stay here.

Active Monasteries/Convents/Chapter houses Along the CF Which Host Pilgrims

In Estella, the Monasterio de San Benito has an hospedería and it seems from their web (www.monasteriosanbenitoestella.com/HOSPEDERIA/DOCUMENTOS/HOSPEDERIA.html) that they accept pilgrims (because they say breakfast and exit time for pilgrims will be agreed with them). Get in touch with the monastery for more info (if there's mínimum stay, if they accept both women and men, rules, fares...).

Not a monastery but the Filipenses (www.rfilipenses.com) have a House of Spirituality in Carrión de los Condes that accepts pilgrims. It's quoted on Gronze and on the Eroski web so it's well-know and there's plenty of info about it.

Lesser known are all the monasteries on or close to the camino that have a hospedería that I'm going to quote now. Rules vary in each monastery. Some of them may accept just men or women (but not both), others may have a mínimum stay... I'm going to quote the monasteries and provide a link to their web but in most cases you'll have to contact them to know what are the rules/requirements and see if they suit you. These hospederías are for people looking for spiritual retreat, spitituality, silence... They aren't aimed for specifically for pilgrims but they may accept pilgrims looking for spiritual retreats along their route as long as they fulfill the rules of the hospedería.

On the camino:

Burgos:

Monasterio de las Huelgas.

Close to the camino:

Alloz (something like 3 kms away from Lorca):

Monasterio de Alloz. Mínimum stay 8 days.
www.monateriodealloz.org/acogida.html

Cañas (something like 5 kms away from Azofra):

Monasterio de Cañas.
www.monasteriodecañas.es/elmonasterio.html
The web just say they have a small hospedería but doesn't provide any further info.

Monasterio de San Pedro Cardeña (something like 6 kms away from Castañares)

www.cardena.org/CardHospeder.htm
Mínimum stay 2 nights

San Pedro de las Dueñas (something like 5 kms away from Sahagún):

Carrizo de la Ribera (something like 10 kms away from Villandangos del Páramo):

Thank you very much, sir! Buen Camino!

Technical backpack for day trips with backpack cover and internal compartment for the hydration bladder. Ideal daypack for excursions where we need a medium capacity backpack. The back with Air Flow System creates large air channels that will keep our back as cool as possible.

In the US, a "monastery" houses men ( monks, friars, etc ) from different orders ( Franciscans, Benedictans, etc ) and 'Convents" house women ( nuns, sisters, etc )
A few times while walking the CF, we assumed we would be staying with men under the name monastery and it was nuns. Then, the monastery in Samos was brothers.
Can anyone offer clarification?
