Hi all.
I'm in the early stages of planning my camino for September 2016. I'll probably be asking loads of questions over the next few months so please forgive me if they've been asked many times before.
First question then. Is it recommended to pre book accommodation in SJPdP or is it ok to find an albergue or hotel on arrival?
If possible, could someone put up links to accommodation?
Many thanks in advance.
Steve.

I've just returned. There was no Hotel accomodation left in SJPdP. I know because some friends were there at the same time (through an adventure travel company) but wanted to add 2 more nights as they hired a car and had day drives to Lourdes and surrounds. In the end because train from Paris was already booked, they were forced to lay A$360 / night!! I booked and stayed at Beilari. Dinner, bed, breakfast for I think €26-30. Great place, opposite Pilgrim's Office, google it :) Buen Camino. Your Camino journey starts now.

Hi Steve.
I'd suggest you book your lodging in SJPP now if you know what day you'll arrive.
You can find some lodging on www.booking.com and lists of albergues on this forum, with a search.
The pilgrim office CAN help you upon arrival, but you might be better off booking something ahead.
El Corazon Puro might be a good place to start, as they'll pick you up in Pamplona, give you a bed for the night and feed you, then drop you off in SJPP next morning to begin walking.

I'd also consider booking your second night at Orisson and doing it NOW.
This will break your first stage (lovingly called HELL Day) into two days (unless you are in excellent condition).

Good luck and Buen Camino!

Agreed about both El Corazon Puro (I came from Paris so went by train to Bayonne then Bourricot Express to SJPdP, but stayed here the day after Roncesvalles) and very definitely Orisson. But I spoke to someone 2 days ago, doing Camino in April 2016, emailed Orisson who replied that they are not taking bookings that far away.
I meant to add that if you don't book in SJPdP, the Pilgrim's Office volunteers will take you down to the gym to sleep on a mattress when they finish at 10pm. At least you'll have a bed. I saw them do this with about 30 pilgrims

Hola, Steve!

Lots of info on this forum, just use Search function and Resources section. Also here:

They are in Spanish but it's easy to understand most obvious terms like Albergues etc.

Happy planning! And Ultreia!

I didn't know they did this. Hey, nothing wrong with a mattress on the floor!

At least you're out of the rain!

Down bag (90/10 duvet) of 700 fills with 180 g (6.34 ounces) of filling. Mummy-shaped structure, ideal when you are looking for lightness with great heating performance.

Guys I can't thank you all enough.
I've been on booking.com as suggested and have managed to reserve a bed in SJPdP at Gite Izaxulo. I dare say that some members would have stayed here, if so tales of your experiences would be very welcome.
I have checked out the option of using El Corazon Puro but as I'll be flying into biarritz I won't be needing this service. But it does seem like a good option for those arriving in Pamplona.
I'll keep looking and planning.

Hi Anniesantiago. Agreed. I thought it was great. As pilgrims arrived during the course of the afternoon and evening, after registration they were asked to be back at the Pilgrim's Office by 9.55pm at the latest. I only know because I was staying at Beilari. Then 2 volunteers walked them 'somewhere' and I was told later, that it was to the huge gymnasium. That also meant that it was an even later night for the volunteers. Cheers again to the vollies:)

Steve, if you want a shorter walk of about 15 -17 kms after Roncesvalles, consider El Corazon Puro. My suggestion also: Don't forget to consider Orisson if you think you'll need to stop across the Pyrenees. By the way, Roncesvalles was absolutely full in Albergue and hotels by about 3 -4 pm when I was there, so people had no choice but to continue to Burguete or Espinal. And many more came in as late as 7pm and afterwards so I have no idea how far they walked. It was VERY busy this last September.

whispering to Steve - hi and welcome to the forum (I know you've posted before this post, but you are still pretty new!) There's a search function up in the top right hand corner - throw a question in there and you'll be surprised at what it chucks back at you. I always search before starting a new thread and often find that my answer was already here or that other threads are highlighted and answer questions that I hadn't even known to ask! It's a groovy wee feature, well worth investigating.

Hi Steve,
I am from Malta and I am planning to start my Camino around the 3rd week of September 2016. So Hopefully might meet you on the road. The forum is great and very helpful... I went to SJPP around a month ago as I was there on holiday. Beautiful place and I'm sure you'll find accommodation. Maybe if you book a couple of months before should be enough!

This really surprised me!
Both the new AND the old albergue were full?

Hi Steve! I am starting from SJPDP on March 15 2016. I am staying in a lovely AIRBNB https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/7892798
It is a 15 minute walk or 5 minute drive to town. She picks you up at the station and gives you a ride out in the morning if you'd like. Not to mention it looks quite lovely! It's $50 a night. I'm spending a bit more that night but I thought a comfy place before I head out would be nice! :)

I loved staying at beilari in sept this year. They have a tradition of sharing why you are walking on the camino around the tablet while dining. It was so touching healing each other stories
I rally felt like I was a part of a grater family. So I reccomend that albergue.

I stayed at L'Esprit du Chemin (now I think Belari http://www.beilari.info/en)...it was very reasonable, fun, great food...I would book ahead somewhere. I traveled in early April, and shared a taxi to SJPdP with two Spanish (Catalan) peregrinas I met on the train out of Barcelona. I had booked ahead, they were going to see what they could find (probably made bold by their language advantage) and they almost didn't get a room. They spent hours walking up and down the street, finally the couple at L'Esprit found a way to squeeze them in...

Belari was still closed for the winter when I started, so I stayed a bit up the street in Gite Azkorria--very nice place with either a dormitory or single rooms.

And watch out. This little button can also open up a black hole--go near it at your own risk. Once you get sucked in.......
