Busy making packing list for upcoming CP, contemplating which electronics to bring and how many cables and adapters I will need. and came across info regarding USB OTG. Honestly I think this is the best thing since sliced bread, and it solved problem of a compact camera without WIFI. I will buy a thumb-drive sized card reader/writer, insert camera's SD card, attach USB OTG to card reader and other end to usb port of smartphone, and presto - camera files and smartphone in communication with each other.

Part of the beauty of it, is you can plug any USB device and connect with camera. So you could store external files on a flash drive (my smartphone is only 8GB) for use with phone. You could watch reruns of the Walking Dead for those moments on the trail when you think you saw a herd of Zombies, and you need to know what to do! You can even store movies files on a SD card (weighs nothing and size of postage stamp) as well other files and of course all the wonderful pic's I will take. Why I bet they even have a USB coffee maker!

I used OTG to transfer images from my camera into my phone for uploading to Dropbox since they didn't have compatible card types. Very effective, and almost no weight.

You can even store movies files on a SD card (weighs nothing and size of postage stamp) as well other files and of course all the wonderful pic's I will take. Why I bet they even have a USB coffee maker!

That's all fine and good when the card is empty, but you have to be careful because it really gets heavy when you fill it up. BUT on the bright side, you can save a ton of weight be not bringing an electric coil and instead putting your OTG cable into your cup of water to heat it up for tea! So, mostly it balances out . . .

The issue for me was, I dont have SD card slot on my smartphone. My camera is not WIFI, but I want the option to be able to blog on the go (OTG) and add pic's.

Haha, yes but if I make a cup of tea with OTG cable, I would need external battery pack - a BIG one.

I'd like to be able to periodically upload photos from the SD card--using what I understand to be good access to WiFi hotspots--at a minimum to "protect" the photos.

I have an iPhone 4, and haven't found anything with good reviews that would let me transfer from SD using a 30-pin connector. But Apple makes a "Lightning to SD Card" device ($29.99) that appears compatible with my iPad mini. Anyone with experience using this or a similar approach? Thanks.

Hi Fred,
I dont think USB OTG is supported for iphone 4 - I did see OTG cable for later iPhone models but didn't look into it much. I have iPhone 4 also and it takes pretty good photo's, but it is not a global phone (CDMA) no sim, so I opted to buy cheap global android phone.
I think you need "camera connection kit" like this one on Apple web site.

But looks like you can only transfer pic from camera to ipad, and not from camera to iPhone. Seems like a lot of bad reviews for ios 8, so you may want to consider that.
Not sure what you mean - you want to "protect" the photo's - if you have a decent SD card, and it is big enough, just keep them on the card. Depending of WiFi connection it may take a long time to send them to family, friends, post to journal, etc. I plan on taking hundreds of pics, but likely will only post a handful of pics each day. If you have good wifi you can use icloud, or Google drive and store them there also.
You might also google "SD card reader for iPhone 4" and see whats out there.

That's great - I love all things geek! It does look a little hefty though at almost 9 oz. I think for my simple needs, and the sake of my back and feet, I will use card reader that weighs 0.3 oz Thanks for link, because it led me to this...............

I have used the SD Card to Lightning adapter with my iPad and it works fine.

I use Android Assistant to transfer sd card data to computer. It supports connect via USB or wifi.
