Cheap Train Travel Between Paris and Bayonne.

I decided to change my start date because of the May National Holidays in France. I got a direct train from Paris to Bayonne on 27th April. Around 12 noon. £32 one way, 2nd class. I chose £38.50 one way, 1st class.

I normally use the German company Bahn(dot)com for the best info on times, available routes, train changes etc. I used Voyages-sncf to book my ticket. But I used the French site (not the English) On the French you can specify what seat you want. Window, Aisle, seats in a group or on their own etc. The trouble with voyages sncf is that they often say no such journey exists when you know that it does. Especially if the journey involves a change of trains. I'd definitely recommend using a computer and not the voyages sncf App as it isn't very good. Many people from UK travel to France during bank holidays, we have one at the beginning of May. Search 'French National Holidays 2016' Then look for prices outside of these dates as they are obviously busy and most cheaper seats have gone. My Wednesday ticket was half the price of the same journey on Friday. I assumed it's because I avoided the holiday time getaway by a couple of days.

Just checked out the captaintrain.com service and if I travel from Paris to Bayonne on Saturday instead of Friday I will save 30 euros. So now the dilemma is - stay in Paris the first night and travel all the way to SJPdP on Saturday, instead of spending the first night in Bayonne. I have some more time to think about it since the ticket for the whole trip isn't available yet.

I land in Paris Orly at 13:15 on a Friday and plan on starting walking on Sunday. I guess I have given myself enough time to get there

I'm traveling from Paris CDG to Bayonne, and decided to just get on the first train at the airport. Still have to book my ticket so not sure of price--but a night in Paris, plus metro and meals, will be much more expensive than the 30 euro difference of your two possibilities. Plus I'm thinking that staying in Paris will be less restful than collapsing in a bed in Bayonne...I figure with a night in Bayonne, and a night in SJPD, I'll hopefully be over jet lag.

Having said this--part of the reason I want to hike the Camino is to get me over my propensity for planning ahead so darn much...

Hi milsub, you may benefit arrive one night ahead in time in SJPdP to get climaticed, check your travelling gear and being rested for your walk. Individual preferences I guess, you just might enjoy Paris for a night.

My plan was either one night in Bayonne and one night in SJPdP before starting, or one night in Paris and one night in SJPdP. So, I am taking it slowly, no rush The question is just what is more chill, in lack of a better word.

I decided it would be more relaxing for me to stay in Bayonne rather than Paris (and I've never been to Bayonne). Have a good nights sleep, then take the short journey to St.JeanPdP. Spend the rest of the day looking around town. There are two hotels from the Ibis chain very near Bayonne train station, around £45-£55 per night. Ibis Styles always includes breakfast. The other doesn't. There is an Ibis near Montparnasse in Paris for a similar price.

My rough guess is the savings you get from going on Saturday vs Friday, will get used up by staying in a more expensive place in Paris Friday night.

But Paris is probably fun than Bayonne on a Friday night

If you've never stayed in an Ibis hotel they are sort of mid-range hotels from the Accor group. No frills, but I've always found them to be clean and comfortable, good showers, good coffee, plenty to stock up on from the buffet breakfast. Fingers crossed.

Oh yes, end specially since I have a really relaxing day as a good brake afterwards. That sounds like a win-win. Get a walk in Paris, get on the bus, save a nights expense, and then use Saturday to get from Bayonne to SJPdP and get ready for the next days hike Thanks!

The Biarritz airport bus arrives directly at the rr staion in Bayonne, Gare SNCF Bayonne.

Eurolines arrive at the bus station on rue L'Escanet in front of the train staion.

There is no central bus station in Bayonne. The answer depends on the bus line you are traveling with.

PESA goes to Place de Basques

Tranports64 Euskadi Express 816 from Irun/Hendaye goes to Place de Basques except that some buses continue to Gare Bayonne.

Place de Basques is 1 km and across the river from Gare Bayonne. You can catch a local Chronoplus bus to make the trip.

Chronoplus airport bus #14 goes from Biarritz/Anglet/Bayonne Airport to Gare Bayonne.

Transports64 811 bus to St Palais (where it meets 810 to SJPdP) leaves from Gare Bayonne.

ALSA goes to TGV Bayonne --- which is Gare Bayonne.

Worse case scenario is you will need to walk to the SNCF Gare/Bayonne from the bus stop. Bayonne is easy to navigate and happily there is only 1 rr station!

The Flixbus website indicates the bus stop is at Place de Basques.

You can walk the 1 km, take a taxi, or take a local bus.

#A1, 5, 8 Chronplus bus routes pass through Place de Basques and Gare Bayonne.

The Chronoplus website has a map that is good enough to use to walk.
