Starting Camino Frances 11 April 2018 :)
hi to pilgrims who walked the Camino Portuguese before :)

I would love to walk the camino Portuguese in spring this year - first by myself and eventually some family members will join me. Looking at school holidays, April would be the ideal time but researching it - it seems that April might be rather wet - does anybody have an experience walking at this time.

When my 16 year old son and I walked the Camino Frances from JPdP in 2015 - we danced in the street to one little bit of rainfall in 25 days hehe.

I'm not a fair weather walker but would be concerned how to get my stuff dried if it rained a lot

Excited to be walking again soon
Erika

Technical backpack for day trips with backpack cover and internal compartment for the hydration bladder. Ideal daypack for excursions where we need a medium capacity backpack. The back with Air Flow System creates large air channels that will keep our back as cool as possible.

€83,-
Hi Butterfly, I walked from Porto to SDC starting end of April and it was very hot so much so that, like your dance at the rain in 2015, when we reached Galicia and it poured it was as welcome as manna from heaven. Bom Caminho

Hi, Erika,

I've lived in Lisbon during several different springtimes. One year, not a drop of rain, another year was rainy rainy rainy. Drying wet walking clothes is the same as drying the clothes you wash after walking, so in springtime, I think you'll have plenty of time to get it dry overnight. But if not, many of us resort to the "pin it to the back of the backpack" method, which works well if the next day is dry.

And just to clarify -- you've posted this thread in the "Coastal Camino from Lisbon" section. That is actually a very untraveled option and not the "standard" camino from Lisbon.

Whichever camino it is, bom caminho to you and your son. I have walked from Lisbon (central route, not the coastal option) and enjoyed it tremendously. Laurie

Hi Laurie, I'm not totally set which way I will travel - I thought the costal part starts from Porto - is this wrong ? My book is on order and should come my way at the end of January :)

Hi Erika,
Well there is a famous song about April Showers ......
When in April were you thinking there seems to be a number of us starting in the first week.

Google weather patterns/averages for that part of Spain for the period you are thinking of. Actually putting in a search in this forum will lead you to Spanish weather sites that can be translated via Google. (https://translate.google.co.uk/)

Hi Jimmy, I like the idea of a number of folks being on the road - not booked any flight yet - also awaiting my book at the end of January ; last time my son and i were limited on time so we walked 20 + miles ish for 25 days solid on the Camino Frances - it was brilliant but also very full on. I'd like a little more time to embrace seeing a little more so my plan is to walk from Lisbon to Porto by "myself" and for some of my family to join me in the easter holidays. What's your plans ? :)

Hi, Butterfly,
I'm not surprised that this is confusing. And this may be more information than you want or need. You are right that there is a "coastal route from Porto." You, As I understand it, are starting in Lisbon and are going to take the coastal route from Porto. So you logically assumed you were talking about the "coastal route from Lisbon.". But it happens that there is a coastal route that starts in Lisbon -- actually, there are two of them -- one is the coastal route that doesn't really hug the coast but goes further west than the "central route"; and the other is the "sea route" (caminho do mar) that does hug the coast but is apparently on trails that are not well cleared. SO.... what this means for you is that I think you will be taking the "central route" from Lisbon to Porto, and in Porto you will go over to the coast.

None of this matters too much, since you know where you are going!

Abnd btw, there are two forum resources with what I think are great guides to the route, one from Lisbon to Porto and one from Porto to Santiago -- look here:
https://www.caminodesantiago.me/community/resources/categories/camino-portugues.40/

You can download both, and I think they are very up to date. Bom caminho, Laurie

In 2013, a group of us walked ( mainly ) along the coast from Lisbon, we actually started from Sintra .
There is no 'Camino" as such.
We made our way using maps and keeping the sea on our left!
At times, we had to take diversions, because if cliffs, small estuaries etc.
We never knew where we were going to be, each night, but found accommodation easy enough.
It was an interesting experience.
My account of it is in the June 2013 archive of my blog; scroll down, for parts 1 and 2.

So glad to hear about other peregrinos doing the Portuguese in April! I'm planning to start from Porto about April 1. Has anyone been on this Camino during Holy Week? Last year I was in Jaca the first half of the week and Pamplona the second before starting the Frances. The Processions were mesmerizing! Went every night and even joined in on Saturday for the public midnight one to move the Virgin to her "starting point" for Easter Sunday. I'm interested in whether Portugal has similar -- or different! -- traditions or whether I should plan to be in Galicia. Any info about festivities anywhere along the route would be most appreciated.

Also, thanks to everyone who chimes in with help on understanding the coastal vs. central routes from Lisbon or Porto to SdC. My eyes usually glaze over when I see the discussions, but now that the time is drawing nigh, I will pull out my maps and put my mind to it.

Also, any inexpensive hostels/hotels in Lisbon for sightseeing beforehand? I know there have been some requests/replies already, but I don't see them right off.

Hi, Cathryn,
Here's a link to the most recent thread on this topic. https://www.caminodesantiago.me/com...tion-near-lisbon-cathedral.44965/#post-471991

The Pensao da Prata is cheap, well located for sightseeing, close to the camino, and family run. But there are other options. Though you will see recommendations for youth hostels in Lisbon, I personally wouldn't enjoy that. The typical youth hostel is filled with wonderful, fun loving, loud young adults who don't sleep at the same time the average pilgrim does.

I'm very interested in where people are looking to start and sources of transportation to and from. I was looking into starting April 2nd in Baiona and ending in Santiago, but am having a terrible time locating transportation ideas.

Hello, my friend of 50+ years and I are on our first Camino walk. We are looking for: 1) safe, comfortable hostels in Lisbon; 2) stages from Lisbon to Porto (via Tomar) in about 16 days...
Hi I have searched everywhere to see if there is a luggage service from Lisbon to Porto. I know there is from Porto to Santiago, but Lisbon ???. Thanks for any info.
