TrailSmart: Camino de Santiago - In-depth guide with offline maps

TrailSmart is a *free* comprehensive, incredibly handy mobile app providing in-depth coverage of some of our favourite long-distance trails, including the Camino de Santiago.

Coverage: We currently have coverage of the Francés, Portugués, Primitivo, and Finisterre, with more being worked on.

Works offline: Once offline maps are installed, TrailSmart works entirely offline - no data connection required at all.

In-depth reference...

Thanks for the link. Just for information, it seems that the TrailSmart offline maps are not free. They are AU$7.99 each.

Hi HedaP - yes, that is correct. I mentioned in my original post that the only thing not free is the offline maps -- I incur costs myself for them plus they are what we're using to help pay the bills (this is a very big project and we're a small team; some overhead is unavoidable). TrailSmart includes support for online maps for those who do not want / need the offline maps. In every other respect, though, TrailSmart is non-commercial.

Feedback and suggestions on the app are highly appreciated. Let me know your thoughts on how we can make the app and the Camino content better.

All good. Thanks for the clarification. I loved my online guide on my first camino. If there is any possibility I can use my phone to reduce weight I'm first in line.

€2,-/day will present your project to thousands of visitors each day. All interested in the Camino de Santiago.
Will do! It is probably at least two months away still, though.
Hi strato,
A few questions: Does your app indicate your current position on the map, even if offline or out of reception--like google maps? Does your app indicate elevation gain between points? Thanks!

Hi gringodevil,

Yes, TrailSmart indicates your current position on the map. That enables you to easily compare your current position with the trail itself or any points of interest along the route. This works offline - it uses the GPS receiver built into your phone (which doesn't require any data).

Regarding elevation gain: TrailSmart has an elevation profile chart that shows elevation changes for a trail section, stage, or overall route. This is interactive (tap the screen to see additional info for that point). The elevation profile chart also shows your current position. Thus, you can see where you are relative to the ascents and descents.

Lastly, the offline maps show 3D contours and uses hillshading, which can be very helpful for getting a visual sense of the terrain around you.

I've just posted an update to the Camino content in TrailSmart so that it now includes the route from Lisbon to Porto (from Porto onwards is already covered in detail). All of the communities have been geo-located and some of the albergues are entered. More details will be done over the next few weeks.

And, is there an Android version available?
Thanks!

Hi @BjmVW - we're doing final beta testing on the Android version now. We're hoping to have it ready for release by the end of this month, though it might go a bit longer -- you never know for sure with software development. I'll post an announcement here as soon as it is released.

I'm starting my Camino July 2. So I hope you have it finished by then ;-)

I'll start in Porto. Since I've just booked my flight, I'm not sure yet whether it will be coastal or central. It'll probably depend on which routes are available in the app I'll have downloaded by then :)

Forgive me if this is simply operator error on my part. I went to your site but could not find a link to the Portuguese routes yet? I am still trying to decide between coastal, inland or perhaps a mix. Do I need to DL the app to find that? On your site I saw the map but no info on the route.

TIA,
David

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.
Hi David – All routes are covered in the same app. Inside the app, you'll select which route you want to follow (or you can create a custom route if you want to do something like start with the Coastal and switch to the Central, or follow some alternative sections). Feel free to email me at eugene@trekopedia.com if you have any questions or need help getting things set up. The app / content is free (there's only a price for the optional offline maps).

Good luck with your planning.

Hey everyone,

We've just released a huge update (v3.22) to the iOS version of TrailSmart which includes a complete overhaul of the Dashboard (making it much more intuitive as well as more functional). There are also improvements to the Trail module and lots of refinements elsewhere.

We've also done some major updates to the Camino content, including creating route-specific trail datasets (Francés, Portugués, etc.) while still also having our existing 'all routes in one' dataset. The route-specific versions avoid 'clutter' from details about other Camino routes and operate faster too.

TrailSmart remains absolutely free, with no advertising, sponsorships, or other commercializations. All of our trail content remains free as well. The only things in TrailSmart with a price are the optional offline maps.

We have coverage of the Francés, Portugués (Central, Coastal, and Senda Litoral), Primitivo, and the extension to Finisterre. Let me know if there are other routes you'd like us to include.

Feedback is very much appreciated. We still have more enhancements coming later this year. The Android version of the updates is being finalized / tested now and hopefully will be available in a few weeks.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Buen Camino!
