New, illustrated English Guide to Camino de Invierno

Time of past OR future Camino
From Braga to Santiago.
Asuncion the President of the Association of Friends of the Camino for Valedorras has asked me to ask everyone if there is sufficient demand to publish a new Guide in English of the Invierno. There is a Spanish version, the Third Edition was published in August 2016 so the plan is to publish it in English for same price of 13€. The Guide is well illustrated with detailed maps of each stage.
-132 pages
-100 photographs
-11 altitude profiles
-25 maps
-Street plans of the principal localities
-Complete information of all the stages
-Albergues, hostals, fountains, bars, taxis, trains, buses.
-Recommended route for cyclists and list of bike repairers.
-Price: 13 euros + postage.
Mail: sulma.arias@gmail.com

Can anyone let me know if you would be intetrested in purchasing as it might help expedite its publication which realistically would be at least 3 months away. Many thanks.

I have the Spanish version, bought at Casa da Solaino, A Rua, hot off the press in August. It is small and light. For those who don't speak Spanish, an English version would be worth having.

Technical backpack for day trips with backpack cover and internal compartment for the hydration bladder. Ideal daypack for excursions where we need a medium capacity backpack. The back with Air Flow System creates large air channels that will keep our back as cool as possible.

Is it really light? 132 pages seems like a lot to me for such a short (sic!) Camino...
Anyway I would encourage to print out some in English also. But Kindle and on-line etc. would be cheaper for Asun and Asociacion I guess,

Great news. Having a "proper" English language guide might be a big incentive for more pilgrims to go to the Invierno. Our little forum guide does the job, but I'm sure Asun and her group do a much better job. I would be quite happy to let someone else take care of the English language peregrino! If she needs a translator, I'm happy to help.

The old version of the Spanish language guide was one of those spiral bound, heavy glossy paper books, so I am very glad to hear it has been put out in a lighter edition.

Keep us informed on this so I'll know whether to bother with an update for the forum guide. Buen camino, Laurie

I'm not likely to walk another camino soon but if I had known about this guide last year I think I would have even bought the Spanish edition. I did know of the Invierno and, if walking solo, I would probably have gone that way but Peg was walking injured and I was worried about what might have been long stages. Maybe the book would have been of help.

Just finished the Invierno this week. The forum guide was better than the Spanish guide. The difficulty we had was that the route keeps getting changed. The new guide would only be valuable if the route is "stable".
Congratulations! It's beautiful Camino.
Can you provide some more info about the changes? And what for were they made. No major Ave construction works or similar as I see in Spanish (Galician) newspapers...

Hi, Yes I would buy English version of Camino Invierno. Planning to walk it next June.

I would certainly buy one. April 2017 is my plan...
... and still think this is "genius":
Zamora - Astorga (Via de la Plata)
Astorga - Ponferrada (French way)
The Invierno
A Laxe - Santiago (Via de la Plata)

I bought one in Spanish from Asún a couple of years ago. It's fine, but the guide on here is, in my humble opinion, better.

Why? Simply because it has received input from many of us, and Laurie's incredible work keeps it as up to date as possible.

Thanks for your comments. I have to say that the Asun Guide is in its Third Edition now and the maps of each stage and of each town you pass are fantastic. So it's a complete Guide. With all due respect as I also helped with the Forum Guide, it does not have any maps so is not as complete as Asun's. Regards.

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
I walked the Invierno with Laurie's pdf last spring, and was with a friend for a few days who had the Spanish guidebook. Both were very useful and seemed to supplement each other. It's a route that requires some faith and improvisation because of the lack of way marking in areas, so the more guidebooks, the merrier! And it's a wonderful, wonderful walk....

As a 'veteran' of the Camino de Invierno (walked twice), I must say that I have had no problems with the way marking. I DID manage to get lost before A Pobra do Brollon, but that was my fault. I also 'invented' another way out of Monforte de Lemos, staying for the night in Escairón and finding my own way back to the camino at Belesar.

I have both guides, and I also posted a link on here to another site with more than decent maps and useful photos:

http://www.independentrip.com/camino-de-santiago/camino-de-invierno/etapa-1-ponferrada-santalla

God willing, I'll be back on the Invierno next summer. I think I was a couple of days behind you last June, Sabbott!

Yes, I'd buy one. Considering the Invierno for next May.

You buy 2 Kanga and send one to me , money in advance.
And get the good travel shops to stock.
There are a least a dozen down here thinking very seriously about the Invierno next year.

I'm planning to walk el camino de invierno next january, in memory of a friend of mine just passed away. I think that i'll buy the spanish version if it won't be out soon the english one.

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.
Asun is not well at the moment so there is a delay in getting her instructions to translate the Guide into English. I'll keep everyone posted, thanks.
Oh, so sorry to hear that! If you're in contact with her please send her my best wishes - just mention the guy with bedbug problem (back in 2014) and she will know.
Thanks for collaborating on translation because this route simply deserves more pilgrims!

€2,-/day will present your project to thousands of visitors each day. All interested in the Camino de Santiago.
Asun's suffering from kidney stones, she said she would speak to me when she's feeling better...I will pass on your messages of concern, many thanks.
When you'll talk with her, please, let her now that me & my camino buddy from Malta will try to stay in her albergue on january the 21th.
Thanks a lot

I'm interested in an easy to follow English version. Is there another I could let know of my interest?

Hi, Marigold Mama,
Have you seen the super-easy to follow guide in the Resources section of the forum? It's the product of many forum members who have walked (and loved) the Invierno!
I so appreciate any direction from any direction! I have never been or used a forum so I know I'm going to be making errors. Bare with me, please. I also know there are a myriad of helpers on this forum and elsewhere so ain't I lucky!
I have seen the Resource section but for some reason I had a problem finding a guide for the Camino Inverno/Invierno. (?)
Thank you I have often read many of your helpful post, peregrina2000.

Hi Marigold Mama,
Here is the link to the guide: https://www.caminodesantiago.me/com...e-to-the-camino-de-invierno-2016-edition.442/

You will have to download it, I think. If you have a problem doing that, please don't hesitate to ask for help. I am a very dumb tech person and I always get lots of help from smart forum members who are very kind and gracious.

Hi, Pilar,
I am just going through old Invierno posts to see if I can find any forum members who have used the guide this year, and I found you!

I wonder if you have any specific comments to add so that we can keep the guide as current as possible. Thanks much, buen camino, Laurie

Ponferrada: Albergue Guiana was really nice. Breakfast was worth it.
Santalla del Bierzo: bar on the highway is closed permanently.
Las Medulas: Casa Socorro is across from the church. Not signed but there is a sign on the fence that says they have rooms.
Bar Mar continues to be a highlight in Sobradelo. Turn to go on camino is to the right of the bar as you face it.
Montefurado: there is a fountain on the side of a private house about half way through town. There is a bench there to rest. A much needed water stop.
Quiroga: Albergue posts the phone numbers on the door. Could not use the washer or dryer but they have racks for drying. Microwave available.
A Pobra de Brollón: turn left at the round about to find As Viñas which was really nice. Turn right to go through town.
Castrotañe: Penelope's place was delightful but the walk from Monforte was all asphalt and hot. The first turn off to the left did not exist. The next left to Castrotañe is well marked. It goes right to Penelope's. There is a bench with the town name on it across from Penelope's.
Chantada: Hostel Yoel was friendly and clean but beds needed to be updated.
Rodeiro: Hospedaxe O Guerra on vacation end of September when we walked through. Hostal Carpeintieras was great.
A Laxe: there were no services or bars open late morning when we walked through after staying in Lalín.
Bandeira: Albergue was very nice with a good kitchen and groceries nearby.
Outeiro: we had the lights stay on all night with no one to call for help. Next time I would stay in Ponte Ulla and have a longer day to Santiago. No food available. A nice kitchen without a single kitchen item in it. Stovetop was not working. Microwave available.
Hope that helps.

Thanks so much Pilar.

About that first turn to the left that goes to Penelope's -- it was a muddy bramble mess when I last walked so I will change the guide accordingly. The second one was also a mess when we walked through so we just stayed on the road till the fountain.

Question about the Albergue inOuteiro. I have a sense that there may be new "management." The last time I was through, there was a little brown wood shack out back where the hospitalera had a small kitchen to make meals for pilgrims. They were not great, kind of overpriced, but she had a captive audience. I'm wondering if she has lost the concession and took her little shack with her.

Our Atmospheric H30 poncho offers lightness and waterproofness. Easily compressible and made with our Waterproof fabric, its heat-sealed interior seams guarantee its waterproofness. Includes carrying bag.

No nice hospitalera in a brown shack or otherwise. Only option is to walk "down to the road" a few kilometers and eat at the restaurant on the road.
No helpful maps but locals will guide you there.

Agree with most of your comments and you obviously did the same stages as I.
Penelope's place is in the middle of the stretch between A Pobra and Chantada that's why I choosed to stay there. Wasn't at all sorry. Next time maybe I'll stay in Monforte and disguise in turist for an afternoon though ;)

Couldn't agree more about outdated mattresses in Hostal Yoel. With interesting system of entering because you don't get a key and every time you go out you have to ring the senora on the way back. Is it still like this?

I heard all this about Outeiro even before my first Sanabres ending and simply wasn't really in the mood for that. Instead I stayed both times in the hotel on the highway and both times was given the same one bed room (I think it was no.103) for 10€. True it's a bit noisy because of the traffic but the supermercado and two good dinner options nearby. With some afternoon hours just for myself before coming to bustling Santiago.

Hello. Sometime ago you posted info pertaining to my planning to do the Camino Primitivo and cutting over to get onto the Camino Ingles.
I replied with a thanks however, my replies are not being accepted and getting shot back to me as "undeliverable".
Possibly this one will be successful and you will know I didn't appreciate your help. Thanks !

It's only the middle of January, but I'm already looking forward to my annual Camino de Invierno, hopefully in early June.

As many have said on here, it really is one of the spectacular routes. If you're looking for hundreds, or even thousands, of people on the Camino, then this is almost certainly not for you. If you want peace and tranquility, amazing scenery, beautiful towns and villages, marvellous people, great food and drink, then the Invierno is what you need!

Some of the stages are not particularly easy, and it's true that there is no comparison with the infrastructure that the Camino Francés has, but in places where there are no albergues you have plenty of excellent choices for accommodation.

Asun's Spanish guide, and hopefully an English version, supplement the forum guide that some of us have contributed to. I also opened a thread on here with another link that has useful information, photos and maps.

100% recommendable. I'm a big fan, as you will have realised!

Hi to everyone who participated in this thread or to any newcomers interested in this topic. I've got an update as I've just spoken to Asun whose finally back to her best after her recent illness. Much to the Association's credit they are preparing a Forth Edition to their Guide which should be published in a couple of months in Spanish Only. However, I have persuaded her it should be published in English given the level of demand that was expressed to me previously. They are also going to improve the maps included in it even further !! So hopefully if all goes well there could be an English Version available by the end of Summer 2017, fingers crossed. At least it will be really up to date when it comes out and definitive given the number of previous editions and corrections.

I do get this. You say you have persuaded Asunción Arias to publish an English version of the Spanish guide book. However there has been a presentation of the guide last February.
As informed on this thread.

Wow, so there are soon going to be TWO English language guides? I hadn't put all this information together. This may mean that the forum Invierno guide will become a thing of the past, but I think I'll stick with it for at least one more year since it's so much fun to do with so many people's help! Buen camino, Laurie
Thank you Laurie. For what you've done and for the new improved version you have in mind.

I completely agree with you the more Guides the better. The advantage of Asun's Guide is the quality of the maps and depth of local knowledge etc seen from a different pair of eyes !! All have a roll to play free ones, English ones etc

If all goes well, I'll be doing my third Camino de Invierno around the third week of June. This time I'll be with my wife. I've told her on repeated occasions just how marvellous this camino is, so she definitely wants to see it for herself firsthand.

Hope to hear from you soon! ¡Hasta pronto!

That's great...I'm thinking along the same lines ..have to do it soon..

There are some beautiful caminos (the Primitivo, parts of the Norte, the San Salvador, for example), but the Invierno has everything, apart - perhaps - for the infrastructure. To be honest, though, the incredible stages and landscapes more than make up for not having albergues every ten kilometres or so.

You may well not bump into anyone else for days on end, but if you want 'masificación' then you should head for the Camino Francés!

Perhaps I am being very slow-witted, but I have not found a link in this thread to where I might buy Asun's guide, in English OR in Spanish. I'm on the Frances at the moment with a companion who has to return to the US because of an injury. So now I have the opportunity to walk a different route, which I would prefer, if I can get enough resources to feel some confidence on the route sola. I downloaded Laurie's guide, which looks very good. But I have to cut her stages in (at least) two, because my age and fitness level limit me to a maximum of ten miles a day. And I do better with fewer miles than that. A guide with maps and a kindle version would be ideal. Does it exist, in any language?

The guide that you have on here is excellent, and quite a few of us who are in love with the Camino de Invierno have contributed to Laurie's work of art!

If you need any more specific information about stages please send me a private message.

I'm on the Invierno at the moment and besides the forums guide I am using the Wise Pilgrim app which is excellent. As long as your ok with sub 20kms days but one 26km day then you should be fine. It is a lovely route although accommodation is not as easy as on the Frances and getting a good meal is a challenge! There is a good guide to accommodation in this thread - https://www.caminodesantiago.me/community/threads/a-few-invierno-questions.47782/

Just to add to above responses (which I can only second) I can send you my info from 2014, simple maps included, and along with mentioned forum guide you'll be able to get to Asun's place in A Rua without any mishaps. There you can buy her guidebook if still wanted. PM me if you think my material could be of some help.

Anyway, Ultreia!

Here's the Link to Asun's Guide see http://caminodeinvierno.es/

I agree with all the previous comments and the Forum Guide is fantasic but I would also stress that Asun's Guide has fantastic maps for each stage and town maps which no other Guide has so even though her Guide is in Spanish (until finally I get the go ahead to translate, you know we have a different pace of life here we don't need to rush things !!) maps are easy to read especially if you are like me a good Geographer !!

Firstly, I must say that the markings on the route have clearly improved immensely as I have only found a few places where junctions were not marked so you are very unlikely to get lost. Also, the Wise Pilgrim App really has ALL of the essential info and as it includes gps tracks you really can't get lost. That said the forum guide is great for all the details not jus of the route but of the places of interest as well.

Thank you all for your replies to my post. I'm now in Las Medulas. I spent a few hours with Roger in Ponferrada, confirming the itinerary I had sketched out. I try not to use apps while hiking, as I'm really not clear what my plan with AT&T allows, and as you know, wifi tends to be hit and miss. At this point I have to say that forum members have done a fabulous job on the Invierno Guide. I am very grateful to you all! In fact, Roger kept referring to it, especially after he saw I had it on my phone. The route IS very well marked, and very beautiful. I have not encountered another peregrino since I started yesterday. The views and the birdsong on the way out of Ponferrada, combined with the solitude of the route make it ideal for me. And so far, I have been able to redesign the stages to suit my needs. I do intend to call on Asun when I get to A Rua and will get the guide with maps then. K-1, I would appreciate any info you care to PM me that would make it easier to locate Asun.

Buen Camino, all!

Strictly speaking you don't need to use any data with the app as it will work without it. It would just mean you could not see the map, but you would be able to see the gps track and where you are in relation to it. I know this as my data did not work for the first 5 days of my camino last year and I still used the app successfully.

This is very helpful information. Thank you!

YES PLEASE! I would indeed love that! Do you have any new ideas on when it could be published? Me and my friend are planning to walk it around May 2018. If it was ready by then we would be more than happy, and less likely to get lost! Many Thanks to you for taking on this task! Love, Susanne

Dur to its success the Fourth Edition of the Guide with detailed maps of each stage including town maps is about to be published in Spanish. Then I can get to get work translating it. I'll keep everyone posted on progress.

I am with Marasus on this one. I have a dear friend who is extremely ill and I wish to dedicate my next camino to her. It would be somehow fitting if it were the Invierno. I also am looking at May 2018.

When I recently met Adia from the Association she said that English guide books are now available via either the website ( http://www.caminodeinvierno.com/content/detailed-guide-winter-route-santiago-aida-menéndez-lorenzo) or via email. I enclose a copy of her card.
Then there is always the very free PDF. ;)
Thanks, Ribeirasacra. I am glad to see this. I think I will stick with the free forum guide for at least one more year (having just posted my intention to do so, about an hour before this news came in!). Not that I am trying to compete with this guide, but having a free alternative is not a bad thing, so long as everyone remembers you get what you pay for. :)

Yes, please. I walked the Invierno last May/June, using a combination of Laurie's guide -- excellent -- and the Spanish version of Asun's guide -- superb. Although my Spanish is very poor, and partly because it is so poor (it was hard to converse with people), Asun's guide was still very helpful. The Invierno was gorgeous, and while I may never have the opportunity to walk the Invierno again, I would like to have the English language guide, if only as a memento of an amazing journey, and to support those who made it possible for me.

€2,-/day will present your project to thousands of visitors each day. All interested in the Camino de Santiago.

Hi, Pray'nwalk, just wondering if you have any comments or additions for the forum guide, I am starting the updates now and would love input from 2017 pilgrims! Thanks, Laurie

Yes I agree with you, I loved it from the first step to the last despite being bitten by a dog, someone even said I should know no better!! Easier said than done. Yes you can buy the Spanish Guide now which I did too or there's info on each stage and maps on their website http://caminodeinvierno.es/etapas-itinerario-alojamiento-predicción-meteorológica/ Laurie I just heard from Asun whose recovering from two recent spain related injuries and she said the Forth Edition of the Guide in Spanish is nearly ready, it's being proof read. I'll keep you all posted.

So will the translation be of the 4th edition? That would be great. Any news on Asún's mom and her health? I know things were bad for a while last year. Surely she knows how many people on this forum remember her so fondly and hope for the very best for her.

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.

Laurie yes the 4th edition. Asun & her Mum are recovering fine and can't wait to reopen their Albergue in February. She said to me thanks to everyone for asking after them.

I can give everyone an update. I have chased up Asuncion several times for progress. They have finally published yet another edition (4th) in Spanish first visit http://caminodeinvierno.es/. Asun is now trying to get a grant to pay for the costs of printing the Guide in English...things move very slowly here ! I'll keep you posted on progress..

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.

I would have thought that carrying a book is a bit to yesterday when undertaking a pilgrimage.
If you want one for the coffee table/book shelf then you can purchase them immediately with English text.
See details in post 82 on this thread. However the link on the official Spanish website for this route has changed. The guide can be purchased here.
I have a suggestion for the forum that issuing the free guides in PDF format may not be so handy these days. As I understand it mobile devices can make the viewing of PDFs rather awkward and that formatting is not consistant. Maybe a change to a format that is more mobile friendly could be considered for these unillustrated guides?

I've long been considering ways to bypass the Sarria - Santiago hullabaloo.
The Inverno is a leading candidate but the fear, perhaps unjustified, of long stages and uncertain accommodation has frightened me off.
A comprehensive English language guide book would be most welcome in paperback and/or ebook form.
Regards
Gerard

Ah. But some of us prefer a paper guidebook. I don't write a journal, but make notes in my guidebook as I walk, good/bad towns, bars. Albergues etc. Then transfer those notes to my new edition when (not if) I walk again. You should see my notes in my latest Brierley for the CF after walking it so many times! Many perigrinos I meet copy out my notes!

Each to their own
Davey

PS, cannot wait to walk the Invierno! :)

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.
I have come to this item a bit later than most - i was about 10 posts in before I realised it was a 2017 post. As for buying the paper verses the electronic, well as an aged fart I am definitely in the paperback world. I just love the tactile feel of paper!!
Have just clicked on one the above links - I have the English language version - its great and light enough to carry, hopefully next May/June;)

I think it would be convenient if the Invierno guide in English were available to purchase at the tourist office in Ponferreda. I was not able to find on the website a postage price for North American shipping, so I don't know to purchase it from there.

Folks,I am going to be very honest here.
This route is hardly trampled, even less with English speakers.
You may just find that English is hardly spoken and if it is that can quite bad.
I do feel that those wanting to take this route are lucky to encounter any information.
But speaking Spanish is all part of the experience of visiting this part of the world. :)

The trouble with paper issues of guides, especially books, they can become outdated quite quickly.
Hence the need to up date the free PDF every year. I was suggesting an alternative to the PDF only. It there was an update via a non paper one that would not have to occur at any one time of the year changes can be made immediately.
I would be willing to wage all you still take your mobile devise with don't you?
Also I have to ask how many of you hard copies of the photos you have recently taken?
I the years we have run this business we have seen a huge shift towards guests using electronic devises.
We have had to constantly up-grade our internet connection to satisfy that demand. No one purchases newspapers, which is shame as they make great window cleaners or fire lighting material.:(

To be honest you are lucky to be able to make on line reservations. Just a few years ago our comrades in accommodation were resisting in listing on the all the well known accommodation portals. Now they all do it. The official reservation website, that is run by Turgalica, (The Xunta de Galicia tourism website) never has worked well.* I cannot remember the last time we got a reservation via them.
* I am not going to go into the many reasons why here, it is not relevant.
