If you're in Europe right now and anywhere near a TV, you may (or really may not!) be interested in watching tonight's Eurovision song contest final. Finalist countries each have a song/ performance entry, and in general it's a rousing cultural experience :).

Enjoy! And Buen Camino,
Faith
You lucky people have all the good TV!

The Eurovision is seen as a huge comedy event by many in Australia . It has increased in popularity over the past few years , so much so that for some inexplicable reason Australia is now able to enter and compete . ' Euro ' parties are held where friends gather to laugh and sometimes hurl derisive comments at the crazy hair and costumes as well as the outlandish special effects . Of course in amongst all this is the odd truly musical effort .
Our own comperes are in attendance and generally give the most tongue in cheek commentary imaginable , all very good fun :)

Edited for spelling !

I'm hoping Australia wins. If you do you know you have to host next year's bash?
The thought of all the countries in Europe (probably less the UK soon :() travelling down under to compete in the EUROVISION Song Contest is hillarious. Good luck mate!

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.
Where are the days that Spain and Mocedades won with Eres tu?
When it was still about music?
Where Johnny Logan won for Ireland?
Abba with Waterloo?
Now it really is just a nice joke...perfect for a night of fun and making comments from the couch...:p
But from what I heard Portugal had a song and the guy could sing...always a bonus :)
Do not know where our Belgian girl ended but she actually had a decent song :)

If there is one thing I would like to miss while walking the Camino it would be the Eurovision Song Contest. The difference between the pumped up publicity and the low quality of the majority of the songs is very great. Music should not be a contest.

€2,-/day will present your project to thousands of visitors each day. All interested in the Camino de Santiago.
There was an additional Australian cultural contribution to this year's Eurovision songfest: httpww.smh.com.au/entertainment/tv-and-radio/aussie-streaker-in-eurovision-stage-incursion-20170513-gw4c7v.html
(In the true spirit of internationalism it turned out to be a Ukrainian streaker wrapped in an Australian flag)

It started at 22:00 - wasn't that way past pilgrims' bedtimes? :)

The UK joined Eurovision in 1957 (long before they joined the EEC/EU in the 70s) so I am afraid Brexit will not bring any relief. And when Australia joined, they agreed that if they win, they will co-host the event in a willing city in or very near to Europe.

Hehe, for us it started at 9pm - maybe not too late for pilgrims in Spain :)

And interesting to know that if Australia ever won they'd still host the following year's contest in Europe (or very near to Europe. What does that mean? :p)

We started watching Eurovision 4 years ago (when Denmark won for "Only Teardrops.") What made it fun was a Facebook virtual party, with our friends from the Netherlands, Australia, the UK, and Spain joining in to comment. We've kept up the tradition, and it's something that binds us together every year, as superficial as it is. This year I paid very little attention to the Portuguese song, and then was gobsmacked when he kept getting votes. How could national juries and the populace be voting for him?! Something political was going on! What about the Swedish and Moldovan guys? How could they not be winning?! (Obviously you see my bias toward adult boy bands here :D).

Then after Salvador finally won, I found his semi-final video and watched the song again - and it was beautiful. He has a great voice, he sang it well, and he wasn't off-pitch like so many of the other performers. So I was glad that one of the best vocalists actually did win with one of the most melodious songs. Congrats to Portugal!

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.

Sabine, you really know your Eurovision history! :)

To anyone who missed it: it's not what it once was. It's now a different kind of thing. Like the Camino de Santiago, perhaps too big a success for its own good, too many participants, some would say. There, I found a link between the two. ;)

Excellent - now do the same for the Champions League please and we can talk about a real cultural event!

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
Google "KODI"
I have an Amazon firestick with Kodi installed.
It has a somewhat deep learning curve to figure out how to find all the channels but I'm getting there.
I still need to add a VPN so many of the European channels will work
Jersey, I've noted those and will start researching when I get back. I really appreciate the information, as also like to keep up with what's going on overseas. Also, thanks for mentioning the learning curve, as I sometimes (...sometimes really often, that is....) find new technology difficult.

Was everyone in Portugal going crazy? (That you could hear and see?)
Everything was quiet around me but I live in a small town so...
But the country was going crazy lol Specially because of all the complaining that happen during the Festival da Canção and after he won it (complaints about him not being "festival material" and "this is why we never win Eurovision").
I'm happy for him but I know this will have little to no impact on his life.

Thank you for putting the link for Americans to enjoy the song too. He was fantastic! My grandson has Cerebral Palsey and moves somewhat like this young man. Does he have CP? Or is it some other neuro-muscular condition?
Whatever I say Bravo and keep going son!

From what I read he has a heart condition.

I liked his air of insouciance and the fact that he looks kind of like an unmade bed:0)). When someone mentioned Fado, I found a link to an incredible performance by Ana Moura on YouTube just in case you like Fado as well, Coleen:

He is just quirky. :p

Edit: his illness has nothing to do with his "weirdness"

He is funny! I spent some quality time on youtube, listening to his music. He also participated in Idols at the time. Looked like a regular boy but with a distinct mind of his own. On twisting his lyrics, he told the jury (who corrected him) something like Night or day, what does it matter? :p:p

Salvador and Luisa Sobral both also won the Marcel Bezençon Award of the Eurovision Song Contest.
Salvador received the Artistic Award - presented to the best artistic performance and voted by the commentator from each country.
Luisa was awarded the Composer Award - rewarded for the best composition with special consideration given to originality and national identity in music and lyrics.
Both well deserved! Parabéns de coração!

During the rehearsals, Luisa took her brother's place, with permission from the Festival, bcause of her brother's health. He arived later with his medical team.
Get well soon, Salvador!

I have been listening to Amar Pelos Dois all day and it is the only song that I have heard of the entire festival.

Some Portuguese friends emailed me that some in Portugal are attributing the victory to the pope's visit. Miracles abound in Portugal these days!
I'm a terrible portuguese because I dont believe in miracles :D
We won because we presented something that stood out. We kept it simple while most countries kept it how it usually is. And we got lucky that nobody else decided to do something different too :p

(I say luck; some people say miracle... :p)

So, could someone explain this contest to me? Who votes? Who is entered?
So, this year there were 42 countries (it should have been 43 but Russia withdrew because of some problem with Ukraine and the Russian contestant). It is divided in two semi-finals and one final

There are two kinds of votes (50%-50%):
Judges' (?) votes: each country has a group of people (4 or 5, not sure) and they have to give points to their 10 favorite performances (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10 and 12 points)
Televoting: the public can vote by text/call

In the two cases, we can not vote for our own country.
The judges from Portugal could give points to any country other than Portugal and the portuguese audience could vote for any contestant other than the portuguese.
But if I was living in Spain I could vote for Portugal because my vote would count as a spanish vote.

Just want to add that there were two semifinals (on Tuesday and Thursday) with 21 contestants each and half of them drop out with the same voting system as described above. In the finals it's the same system of voting, the difference is that there are only half of all contestants but the votes come from all of the originally participating countries (42). That includes Australia :D

Well, I have to find that globe from the elementary school I guess ;)

I LOVE Fado! I became acquainted with it in 2013 during a trip to Lisbon. Tried to listen to it when doing housework, but you can't dust when you're crying.

Portuguese singer Salvador Sobral has been admitted to the Hospital de Santa Cruz in Carnaxide (Lisbon) awaiting the arrival of a heart compatible with his body. The poor health of the most recent Eurovision winner has worsened following the increase in his physical activity since his triumph at the song festival. According to the Portuguese magazine TV7 Dias, Sobral is being watched by the health workers and is now "much less at risk". "He has machines that perform organ functions and is much more in control," a source close to the family says in the magazine.

After a successful heart transplant, Salvador Sobral has returned to music. He has been longing to sing for us all, he tells on Instagram, so here he is with his interpretation of 'Landslide' from Fleetwood Mac.

Also the perfect song for a Winter Camino.
