Just completed it; good, straightforward questionnaire.

Good luck with this, Birte. I'm writing a PhD thesis on landscape and emotion on the Camino Frances and Camino Portugues so I'd be very interested in your results and conclusions.

Done, thankyou for giving me the chance to do this.

Done. But I have a question: what does "only getting stamps foe the Compostela" have to do with how one participated in religious activites, such as attenting services?

And a comment: many of us have walked a number of Caminos, and your survey does allow us to show that, but ... motivations for each can be very different, and that cannot be expressed in the way the survey is set up.

Also completed. Good luck with your thesis Birte !

Did complete the questionnaire. Success!

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.
Done. Good luck with your studies.

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.
I thought the motivation categories were somewhat limited. Other than religious/spiritual reasons, competition/accomplishment reasons, and making new friends, there was the option "to stay fit". I didn't see an option for my main motivation to walk the camino, which I would have thought was more common. I walk the Camino because I love the natural beauty, the history, culture, small villages, food and language. I love passing through ON FOOT regions with different eco-zones and landscapes, different architectural styles and different foods and dialects. I have always loved to hike, and more and more, I like this kind of hiking that includes a bed at the end of the day in an interesting place and cafes with coffee, food and wine. I love meeting and chatting with elderly people in the villages they were born in, and where all of their ancestors since the beginning of time have lived.

Yup. And it made me wonder about the validity of PhDs. At least there was a blank space to add commentary.

If your base hypothesis is not correctly framed, all you will get is either a false picture based on the options you gave, or nothing at all. Which is why it is why it is difficult to find the rare thesis director that actually knows something about our topic and can raise flags. And why I am still searching for one, for a non C. subject.

And a biased, self-selected and very limited sample here, unless she goes out on the Camino and interviews all who pass. I would suggest doing that first. Then, after the open-ended question of why each one is walking the Camino, create categories that reflect those answers.

I just re-read the questions and, at least in English, a number of them don't make sense at all.

This inquiry had to many weaknesses to push the "finish" button at the end. The biggest problem was that th possible answers were to limited, for instance regarding the question if walking the Camino had an influence on my daily after Camino life. The possible answers were 3 times yes ( in gradations) and no not at all.
It would have been nice it it would have been possible to make comments like this at the end of the survey

Well, in case OP Birthe does not return here and / or does not read a pm those who have some different of ideas about this survey can always adress them to the Hohschule in Bremerhaven.
They have a fully functioning website in English.

First of all, I wish @Birte all the best for her paper, her studies and her future.

Secondly, perhaps she finds some of the suggestions made in this thread useful to improve her questionnaire.

Third, it's not for a PhD, it's for a BA, and for an institution of higher education that is not a university in the classical sense, they are oriented more towards practical applications.

In general, I suppose that the authors of these requests to complete a questionnaire that we get on this forum from time to time make it clear in their papers that the results are not representative for all the people who walk the caminos but rather selective (and self-selective on top of that).

Bon travail ;).

Dear Birte, I make questonnaires for a living. Your questions are mostly quite good, but there are too many either-or qustions.

An example: I have walked, in total, around 80 days on different caminos. I have ONCE used transport for my backpack, so I replied "yes", though this is not representative.

(But then, I work mostly with qualitative data, so I like text replies...)

What, you aren't going on a walk to "find yourself" or figure out what to do "next"?

:p

Also, I absolutely agree with your wonderful reasons. They are motivating, compelling, and make me so happy to consider. Then again, I truly appreciate your appreciation of mosaic art, wine, and handmade soaps.

Buen Camino, friend.

This questionnaire is certainly flawed and not scientific in any sense. It certainly wouldn't have passed muster for my Master's thesis or PhD. But it's just for a Bachelor's degree and as has already been mentioned, not for a typical university. Unlike a PhD thesis, the results of this survey are just that. Results of a survey. It won't ever be published as part of any legitimate social science publication (standards are too high).
Just be glad that you helped out a student in her studies and try not to take this too seriously :)

Jill, I thought your comments were spot on regarding why so many of us return to the Camino (and other long distance walks), and agree it was frustrating that the survey didn't give the opportunity to express this. After completing her second Camino my daughter used the experience of pilgramage as the core of her masters in architecture project. She loved exploring the history and motivations of various pilgramage routes and struggled to clearly express this and relate it to, or through, architecture. In the end she focused on the process of moment and the contemplative aspects this can bring, something you expressed so well.

I have completed your survey. However, IMHO, if you had walked it before setting the survey up, maybe you would have focused some issues differently. But what do I know... Hope to see you on the Way someday...

I am completely with you, Jill. Twin soul. Take the time to "smell the roses". When you get to SdC it (the walk and all with it) is over and you are in for an emotional surprise before going home to conformity: Game over. :)

Good questionnaire. Like all multiple choice questions, it leaves certain answers off the table, but what's the option? Good luck with your thesis

Can't complete the survey as the options on some pages aren't 'active' when I click - anyone else had this problem?

Thank you everyone for your responses! I am very grateful to you all! The survey is now closed and I am in the process of going through the results. I will post a summary of them once I am done - probably around the end of September :)
