Lisbon to Porto January, February 2018

Hi,
I'm planing on hiking from Lisbon to Porto between January20 and February 17.Will I have any problems with accomodation ? are the albergues open? Where can I get a list of open albergues during this time. John Brierly's book Camino Portugues doesn't tell you if they are open in the winter.

I am planning Porto - Santiago - Finisterre at a similar time of year (Jan 2018), and also wondering about opening of albergues, etc. Would be very grateful to hear general tips too from anyone who has walked that route recently!

Hi there,
I walked it in September and loved it. My only advice is to avoid that first days walk due north through the suburbs of Porto. It is uninteresting and is entirely on concrete. By the end of the day you will suffer foot, leg and hip soreness, no matter how fit you are. The second day seemed to be mostly on cobblestones! I know now that I should have taken the coastal path for a day or two, and then cut back east to join the inland route. I wrote a note about my experiences in the Portuguese section of this website a couple of months ago, and it it is still in there if you are interested. Have fun.

You can see which albergues are open all year round. For example, choose an “Etapa”, e.g.:

Etapa 9: Alvorge – Cernache (Stage 9 from Alvorge to Cernache):
Alvorge: Albergue de peregrinos de Alvorge:
Datos básicos
Exclusivo para peregrinos: Sí
Disponibilidad (meses inclusives): Todo el año

Put this into “Google Translate” and you get:
Basic data
Exclusive for pilgrims: Yes
Availability (inclusive months): All year

So, the albergue in Alvorge is open all year round.

Cernache: Albergue de peregrinos de Cernache:
Disponibilidad (meses inclusives): Todo el año

Etapa 10: Cernache – Coimbra:
Coimbra: Albergue de peregrinos Rainha Santa Isabel: Disponibilidad (meses inclusives): Todo el año
Hora de apertura (Opening time): 14:00

Sadly no - I've just finished 7 days on the Rota Vincentina (Southern Portugal), and have decided to walk Porto - Finisterre later this year, perhaps in April or so.

When did you walk it before? Any major tips or things to bear in mind?
