Does Huntto have a Cafe?

I walked past without really noticing, or is it just a Gite (and for guests only)?

Our first few days this year will be very slow as Pat is carrying an injury and I thought Huntto would be a nice coffee stop before the step section to Orisson.

Is there actually a cafe open to non guests?

Tricky question to answer. Luck of the draw I think. The cafe is part of the gite but I suspect only open at the staff’s discretion. We arrived mid morning or maybe a little later and the person on duty was a little grumpy and served us reluctantly. I think she wanted to get on with cleaning the gite which is fair enough. Have to say though that she served a really nice coffee and their toilets were five star ie. clean, toilet seat, toilet paper, soap and hand towel.

I was aware of Hunto, but it seemed too close to SJPdP to stop for the day and for some unknown reason I thought it was some overflow tent option if people couldn't get a reservation for Orrison. I never realized it was actually a gite with a cafe. However, maybe at the time I assumed "gite" meant tent. I find it interesting that after following this forum for almost a year I've not heard Hunto mentioned until now. Is it right on the trail?
BTW, I will be walking the LePuy in June, and I now definately know what a gite is!

Yep, on the trail, you walk right past it..........

Robo, I had to take the Valcarlos route in 2015 as I had not made a reservation at Orrison in time. I remember seeing Hunto on the map as a possible default stop, but figured it would be too soon to stop for the night and who wants to have to sleep in a tent on Camino.
BTW, I loved the Valcarlos route so much that I repeated it in 2017. You don't have to worry about such quickly changing weather, high winds or too much fog to see the views.

We loved Hunto. In 2014 after long travels from the USA and car sickness from the drive from Pamplona to SJPP and a drizzle of rain, we found it very nice and only 2k from the next stop. They have a quiet gite as well as luxury accommodations. The dinner is wonderful..and French, after all one is in France. Funny we could hear walkers early in the morning passing by before we had our breakfast and got on our way on a lovely clear day. And we did notice they were serving some light snack to passers as we rested during our first afternoon.

Yes, I was sick and nervous on that drive to SJPdP! We were in an older small car, a supposed "taxi" with a young driver. He drove SO fast, whipping around all the many corners "like a bat out of hell" as my mother used to say. I think he envisioned himself as a race car driver. I hung on to the seat in front of me literally for dear life. Ocassionally I even shrieked in fear, but was totally ignored for the hour drive as he raced on. I was SO happy to get out of that car! I wondered how many pilgrims possibly have been injured in accidents along that route by crazy taxi drivers.

Why not make a reservation to stay at Orisson if Pat has an injury?

The first edition came out in 2003 and has become the go-to-guide for many pilgrims over the years. It is shipping with a Pilgrim Passport (Credential) from the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela.
Yes, or take the Valcarlos route...beautiful and interesting route in its own way, too, and with more provisions along the way if needed.

Unfortunately between SJPdP and Valcarlos there is only one place for food/water/petrol near the old frontier; between Valcarlos and Roncesvalles monastery there is NO place for food nor potable water. Be prepared!

Technical backpack for day trips with backpack cover and internal compartment for the hydration bladder. Ideal daypack for excursions where we need a medium capacity backpack. The back with Air Flow System creates large air channels that will keep our back as cool as possible.

True, but I felt I had more options both on the way to, and in Valcarlos, which is almost half way to Roncevalles. It's a long walk after Orrison with nothing until Roncevalles. The Valcarlos route made me feel safer if I had any "issues" along the way., especially on my first Camino in 2015, when I was a scared little rabbit, worried about making it to Roncevalles!

We had to stay there, as it was winter and Orisson was closed for the season. Just one holiday family, the owners, and us in the house, all around the dining table together. It was the end of December. The food was farmhouse, but oh, so delicious, but no idea if there is a cafe in more normal walking times.

I think that is true. I went by in mid-October and it looked sort of open, but no one was in attendance at the time. I think there was a vending machine, and places to sit down and have a snack, though.

Robo - Are you at the level of planning your coffee breaks now? (You know we like to tease you.) :p

In May 2015 I left SJPdP around 9 or 10 am as I was only walking to Orisson that day. A few of us stopped at Huntto, but no one came out to meet us. The door was open and we went in. We just grabbed some chocolate bars, left the money on the counter, and then sat on their lovely porch and enjoyed the view.

Of course, doesn't everyone :rolleyes::rolleyes:

I just know that Pat will find that first section up to Orisson very hard. Between plantar faciitis and knee pain (going for MRI today) she slows down to a crawl on climbs and descents.

We are only aiming for Orisson on day 1. And so we'll take our time and enjoy the view.

I just thought Huntto would be a nice place to stop for a break..........
Before she sees the next steep section :eek:

Maybe I should run a lottery on how long it will take us to get to Orisson ? :D
It took me 3 1/2 hours.
I reckon with Pat it might take us 5+:oops:

But we are in no rush........

We have 50 days to get to SdC and more if needed.
Lots of time to smell the Roses......

We stayed at Orisson plus had a nice break at Huntto. I’m glad we did otherwise we would have had even more time on our hands in Orisson. It worked well.

When do you start your "Camino" ? Untill April the way by the mountain is closed. You have to pass by Valcarlos (the other way) and on this road there are bars, shops and restaurants.

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.

Hi Monasp. We start out from St Jean on 25th April, so we are hoping the mountain route will be open then.

There is indeed and a very welcome stop it was

It is hard to say but when I walked mid April 2015, the route was open even though there were still a few places that had snow on the ground but nothing deep but then you never can tell with snow. In 2013 there was snow on Perdon outside Pamplona but strangely the real problem was back home where my wife was snowed in with the worst snow fall in 50 years. You may as well ask how long is a piece of string as ask about the snow in the Pyrenees in April. Hopefully, it wont be bad as I start on the 6th

I started out on 28th April in 2015, a few days behind you.

Glorious day, clear and sunny, with a few patches of snow remaining.....

Thinking back, they may be the kind of French that only react positively when you speak French - I seem to recall that we had zero luck with speaking English and only managed to gain ground when I switched to French. At least, she stopped scowling then.
