Ideal pocket guides for during & after your Camino. Each weighs only 1.4 oz (40g)!
About Herbon, near Padron, new albergue opened by the AGACS, Galician Association, next august.

This albergue will be opened by the traditional hospitality rule, the same that it works in Corcubion and in so many places.

I'm sorry for not translating the information, I suppose is not difficult to understand it's portuguese and spanish.

Buen Camino,

Javier Martin

Fantastic - very useful (Spanish / Portuguese - makes no difference to me because despite having travelled widely in Spanish / Portuguese speaking parts of the world for over a decade now we still manage to mangle the dialogue - but get buy with international sign language and the incredible patience of the locals).

Has this list been expanded for 2010?

Down bag (90/10 duvet) of 700 fills with 180 g (6.34 ounces) of filling. Mummy-shaped structure, ideal when you are looking for lightness with great heating performance.

in Valenca, Mos, Redondela, Pontevedra, Padron - these albergues are very nice.
in Padron is the best!!!!!!
and another thing people does not know : this year because of holy year the Seminario Menor - has opened it's doors for pilgrims. it is a very beautiful place, with a special atmosphere!!!!! a little more expensive : 10 euro per night. but it worths the money!!!!

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.

Don't forget, there's another donativo albergue beside Padron, just in Herbon, in an ancient monastery, run by the galician association with the same philosophy than Corcubion, Tosantos, Grañon, ... nice to be visited!

New Original Camino Gear Designed Especially with The Modern Peregrino In Mind!
In 2010 a new, and beautiful Hostel opened in Tamel. There are lots of beds. There is a restaurant across the street that is very good and not too expensive. You might miss it (as I did the first time there) because the arrow pointing to the Albergue takes you off the road just before the restaurant. The Albergue has a lovely kitchen. The grocery store is about 2 kilometers away to the right when you come to the main road. It is worth the walk if you want to cook.

One note about Rubiaes. Bed bugs! It is the only place I was bothered by them. There is a hotel about 2K before the Alberguethat is nice 15 Euroes a night, extra 10 for dinner. The grocery store in Rubiaes is about 3K by road from the Hostel.

I have a good list of Albergues from Porto to Santiago with distances if anyone wants to know. I will happily post it. :)

Beverly,

If you have time please do post your list! I have the CSJ guide to the Portugues, and have the Brierley book on order, but more information is always better than less.

Also, what time of the year and how long ago did you encounter bedbugs in Rubiaes? My worst fear is not getting bitten myself (although that would definitely be bad), but having to ruin all my gear by washing in hot water to get rid of the little buggers so that I couldn't carry them to the next place. I'm going in May, and am hoping that will lower the chances of encountering them as opposed to in the fall, when there have been more pilgrims to carry them from one albergue to another. Faulty thinking?

Thanks!
Cynthia

What is the average cost of albergues and/or hostels between Porto and Santiago? Do you need reservations at each place you stop for the night? How many kilometers between Porto and Santiago? Can it be walked in 9 days?

If a person cannot continue to walk are there daily buses or trains between the towns along the way that a person could use as a "sag wagon"?

I've never done anything like this before and I have a lot of questions. I'll be walking with 4 others from July 1 until July 14, 2012.

Thank you for any help you can provide.

Hi Pilgrimess,

A good starting point for you would be to take a look at the very comprehensive guide to the Camino Portugues (Porto - Santiago) available on-line here. It can be downloaded in PDF or Word format (a donativo is requested).

The guide has a suggested 10 day schedule as follows
1 Porto – Vilarinho (or Vila do Conde) 27 kms
2 Vilarinho – Barcelos 27 kms
3 Barcelos – Ponte de Lima 33.5 kms
4 Ponte de Lima – Rubiães 20.5 kms
5 Rubiães – Valença or Tui 20 kms
6 Valença (Portugal) or Tui (Spain) – Redondela 30 kms
7 Redondela – Pontevedra 20.5 kms
8 Pontevedra – Caldas de Reis 21.1 kms
9 Caldas de Reis – Padrón 17 kms
10 Padrón – Santiago 23.9 kms

You may be able to arrange a 9 day schedule by changing the distance walked in a few stages and subject to the availability of somewhere to sleep. Municipal Albergues do not need to be booked ahead and I believe, that within Spain at least, that these cost EUR 5 per night. I'm not sure about the arrangements in Portugal but others may be able to provide more information/recommendations. Some private hostals and certainly Hotels would take advanced reservations.

Certainly in Spain the route runs fairly close to the train line for a lot of the way so you would never be too far (walk or reasonable taxi ride) from a railway station. You pass through some fairly large towns so local bus option is also viable although maybe not as direct.

Anyway, have a look at the guide and other posts in the Camino Portugues forum and feel free to post further questions when you are ready. The Portugues is a popular (as well as a lovely) route and many forum users will be able to help further.

Regards
Mig

Hi Pilgrimess!
You're in for a wonderful time! Remember it will be very hot in July, so take sun BLOCKER, and long trousers in case the backs of your legs get burned.
Costs vary in albergues from 4 to 10 Euros - the latter in 'private' albergues which may provide sheets and pillows [bliss!] The 'norm' is around 5 Euros and many albergues issue you with stretch throw-away paper covers for mattress and pillow.
There are plenty of hotels in the towns, ranging from 20E per person and upwards. But then, of course, you don't have the fun of mixing with other peregrinos.
On my web site is last year's diary and links to 700 photo's of the Porto to SdC route.
Buen camino!

Thank you for all the very helpful information! I really appreciate your repsonses.

Do you know of a light weight map of Portugal that I could carry in my back pack? I'm trying not to take a lot of books to keep the weight down.

Do you know if Teva sandals are appropriate for this trek especially when carrying a back pack?

Thank you, again,
Pilgrimess

€2,-/day will present your project to thousands of visitors each day. All interested in the Camino de Santiago.
Hello everybody,
We're planing a camino for a large group of friends (the end of August - group of aprox. 30 people), and we have worries about enought number of beds in albergues. Does anybody know, whether is possible to book places in common albergues (not intrested in the private ones)? If there wasn't enoght place, would they let us sleep in some garden/or something like that?
Thanks for answers

Dear Beverley, would it be possible to post the list of albergues from Porto to Santiago. I am
on a shoe string budget and are looking for affordable places, like the albergues in the Camino Primitivo. I am starting my walk on Sept. 4th. Thanks for helping out the peregrino's. Ingrid.

Ingrid, I posted updates last October. There are 2 posts, one for Porugal 2011 and one for Galicia 2011. I was also on a budget so only stayed in Albergues. I am not clever enough to post a link here but hope this helps.

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.
Ingrid, it's not hard. Most are Albergue de Perigrinos and cost €5 from what I understand. In Porto both the cathedral and information place next to cathedral have lists of albergues. I'll be adding a list when I go home in a few weeks (I know that doesn't help you) but will you be going the inland or coastal?

Most lists cover inland

Coastal, there's albergues in Marinhas, Viana do Castelo (in cathedral/ monestary) but turismo don't know about it (closed when I went back to tell them), and also in Caminhas. Otherwise you'll have to use Bomberios, youth hostels or other accom

List to follow

Hi, Just thought I would add this link to the list http://www.caminho.com.pt/onde_ficar.html.

It is good as far as Santarem unless you decide to go via the Fatima route instead of Tomar. There are a couple of entries which do not appear on the other lists, and it possible to stay at them if you ring in advance, I was told it did not matter that I was pilgrim going to Santiago rather than Fatima. One place that was recomended to stay to me was the place between Azambuja and Santarem, Valade. It is a tranquil place next to the river Tejo.

Santorem

Excellent new hostel here. Santorem Hostel is one minute for Tourism Office right in the middle of town. Turn left out of the Tourist Office and then immediately left. It is No 26 just down the street.

I stayed here earlier this week after the long walk from Azambuja.

This is a really good hostel run by a helpful, firednly couple. Dorms are 15 euros. Very spacious. Includes breakfast. It also has private rooms at 35 euroes and 40 euroes.

Cheers

John

3rd Edition. More content, training & pack guides avoid common mistakes, bed bugs etc
I know things are always changing on this route. In particular, I think that the number of Bombeiros Voluntarios (Volunteer Firefighters) that accept pilgrims is on the decline. As the numbers grow between Lisbon and Porto, the pilgrim traffic is probably becoming more of an interference with their operations. But in most places, alternatives are available.

In any event, I always recommend the listing kept by the Via Lusitana, the Lisbon "friends of the camino" group. Their list was last updated in June, and the members strive to keep it up to date.

Their list is in Portuguese: http://www.vialusitana.org/caminho-portugues/albergues/

AND English: http://www.vialusitana.org/en/albergues_eng/ (though maybe not as up to date -- for example, the new Santarem Hostel does not appear on the English listing).

Bom caminho. Laurie

€2,-/day will present your project to thousands of visitors each day. All interested in the Camino de Santiago.
Get a spanish phone number with Airalo. eSim, so no physical SIM card. Easy to use app to add more funds if needed.

Please post. Thank you.

Here is a recent Guide which is available for free download ( please leave a donation). Because it is on line it can be kept up to date easily. Please send me any additional information you discover!

Technical backpack for day trips with backpack cover and internal compartment for the hydration bladder. Ideal daypack for excursions where we need a medium capacity backpack. The back with Air Flow System creates large air channels that will keep our back as cool as possible.

St James' Way - Self-guided 4-7 day Walking Packages, Reading to Southampton, 110 kms
This list was started in 2009, and there have been so many new places added to this route. I think that a more reliable source would be to go to the Via Lusitana's webpage, and you will see a full list.

The csj guide Miguel linked to is now available on kindle, or go to the CSJ website. I think the Lisbon to Porto guide is still available in the forum's resources section.

Hi, Has anyone stayed in Armenteira recently? I’ve contacted Victor the Taxi to try and reserve a bunk at the Slbuergue de peregrinos. He told me to contact “ Albergue de San Ero de Armenteira”...
