LIVE from the Camino Stage 1: Oviedo-Cornellana

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.
Please report us in the following days also, so I can prepare myself for whatever I can expect when my day comes...

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.

Please keep sharing - I will be walking the route in May so its great to hear from someone who is walking it now. I do hope the trail has dried up by the time I get there.

Stage 2: Cornellana-Tineo

Took a long time (10hrs) due to these boot-sucking mud - and I mean EVERYWHERE!!

So much swollen waterways and even gotten cold enough for an hour long snow flurries. Beautiful young Spring season!

All in all, I think everyone was so happy to see me - even the dog’s wagging tail!

Stage 3: Tineo-Cambillo

I decided to stop at the Casa Herminia Hostel & Hotel at Campellio and ended staying there over night. Herminia is a wonderful hostess who runs the place. Her boisterous and warm opened-arm personality was a most welcome sight and experience. Her restaurant meal was hot and very appetizing; especially after the 3-day long wet and cold yet magnificent contemplating walk. Thanks Herminia!

Herminia is quite the shrewd entrepreneur. Some don’t like her because of it, or maybe because of her success. Big I say good for her.

I don’t remember anything about the dinner I ate at her place, but how could I forget the plates of fried bread served with bowls of preserves. You may think it sounds gross, but our table of 5 or 6 snarfed it all down with gusto.

Hope you have good weather tomorrow!!!

Stage 4: Campiello-Berducedo
Oh what a luck! Upon arriving at the fork and a weather condition observation, I made a dash for the Hospitales Mt. It was indeed grueling and yet most rewarding:

And check out these Asturias Wild Horses:

At Berducedo, I stayed at the Camino Primitivo Hostel. It has a bar and a gastronomically flavorful restaurant (hot & tasty 3-course meal @ 10Euro - local wine included). Very clean - everywhere - and plus a great hostess, Vanessa, I enjoyed it very much.

What great pictures! Such beautiful views and getting to see the horses. Looks like you had a magnificent day and fabulous food for breakfast and dinner.

Stage 6: Granda de Salime-Padron

Sun finally peeked down as I crossed from the Asturias to Galacia; and now more than halfway.

More happy dogs & that tempting sign!

Yes, there were muddy, running water, and even swampy trails; but first two stages were even worse. It took some Indiana Jones spunk to get around it or tread on it - very carefully and slowly!

Heading off from Oviedo on Monday 28th May, hope to stay in Albergue La Doriga (35km) on first night. Sure hope the weather has improved by then or at least the rain has stopped.
Great pictures and a delight to see you are keeping your spirits up despite the tough going. Buen Camino

Well folks, sharing my first-hand here: it rained mostly and mud, everywhere. With a rewarding colder beer as I write this, it was well worth it: a 23m / 11hr nature adventurous beauty. Small steps, slowly and carefully; but GO!

Love it,! Thank you and its just what we need to read as starting our first camino next Monday and nervous because of all the rain and snow that is/has occured. Thank you and buen camino.

Living in the south of Spain we "don't do mud" even though we walked/ran/biked in plenty of it in a past life in the UK.

We're walking sometime in May and if a weather window opens up we'll take it and deal with the underfoot conditions once on our way.

Thanks for posting.

Technical backpack for day trips with backpack cover and internal compartment for the hydration bladder. Ideal daypack for excursions where we need a medium capacity backpack. The back with Air Flow System creates large air channels that will keep our back as cool as possible.

Stage 7: Padrón

After reaching beyond halfway, I rewarded myself a day of rest if not recuperation.

Complejo O Pineiral is an impressive boutique hotel with its true Galicia Spaniard restaurant where many local families enjoy.

Best of all, not only it’s the only building in the quiet serene scenic countryside with garden - about 3.5 km from Padrón - but also has the coldest 1906 beer around. Cheers...!

I'm also starting on April 27th... I will probably see you somewhere on the way, looking forward to meet you... :)

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
Stage 8: Padrón-O Cadavo

Wow - this was definitely 2nd most challenging long & steep ascending & descending hike after Mt. Hospitales’. As they say, go slow but Go!

Two rewards here:
1) Casa Meson @ Paradavella had powerful kickin’ coffee and made me a toasted Godzilla ham & cheese sandwich to go. Two dogs kept checking on me. Thanks for making my day! <smile>

2) Porta Santa Hostel in O Cadavo is well worth a stay over. The hostess, Mery, was sweet and kind as I was arrived literally ragged. Heck, she even washed my clothes - for free. I noticed in my private room’s bathroom has two toilets. One allowed me to fill with hot water for my aching sore soles - aaah sweet..!

Very light, comfortable and compressible poncho. Specially designed for protection against water for any activity.

Our Atmospheric H30 poncho offers lightness and waterproofness. Easily compressible and made with our Waterproof fabric, its heat-sealed interior seams guarantee its waterproofness. Includes carrying bag.

Stage 9: O Cadavo-Lugo

With unhappy baby toes and as a history buff, I took a 45min bus instead of 6+hr hike. It’s important to mend these babies before hiking the rest.

My goodness, it was worth it! A brief: The Roman Walls of Lugo are a UNESCO World Heritage Site as the finest example of Roman fortification in Europe. A visit there is not completed without a 2KM leisure walk around its ramparts. Awesome!

Also a jogger’s paradise:

1) Casa Meson @ Paradavella
We remember it well. We had a bocadillo with omelette filling. The owner went out to the hen-run and came back in with nearly a dozen eggs. Great sandwich. We caught the afternoon bus from Paradavella into Cadabo, then next days walked 2 stages into Lugo; Cadabo to Castroverde and then Castroverde to Lugo. Had 3 nights there to rest and sight see.
Hope your toes are better. Looks like the weather is improving for you.

Stage 10, 11, and 12: Lugo-Santiago de Compostela

Primitivo Camino after Lugo is not a “primitive” quality as the first eight’s. Before Lugo, there were about eight hikers; and afterwards, more than a hundred.

Many restaurants, bars, souvenir shops, and even a few spas went by. Camino folks appeared clean and well-dressed, basking out in the warm sunshine enjoying wine and tapas. This a far crying difference than first days of fog, rain, and wind; fighting boot-sucking mud and onslaught cascading creek on trails; and maneuvering many fallen trees. I guess my badge of honor is being in culture shock and the dirtiest hiker around! Lol

As a lifelong avid hiker, this challenging 311km Primitivo Camino journey changed everything and yet, I am reeling with gratefulness to pull this off - it was moving.

My sincere thanks to this informative website and all of your rallying support, it paved my way - except the wet Spring seasonal weather!

BUEN CAMINO!

Thank you for sharing with us your day by day experience. I can't wait to start my Primitivo next Friday, hoping that I'll have a better weather and with no mud! Thanks... buen Camino!
